2013-2014 Prep Sports Recap

The high school sports season wrapped up on Saturday so let’s take a look at how everybody fared this season.

There was one team state titles this year, brought home by the Northwest Christian girls cross country team, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering they’ve won eight straight 2B titles.  A few teams took second place in state: Capital volleyball and boys soccer, Timberline girls bowling, Tumwater football and girls track and field.

For individuals, Brooke Feldmeier led the way with three state titles. The Ole Miss bound Tumwater senior won 2A titles in the 100 meter hurdles, the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash.

Four individuals won multiple state titles. Capital junior Ryan Chase won two 2A titles for long jump and triple jump, Northwest Christian senior Karen Bulger took 2B titles in javelin and shot put, River Ridge junior Dejuan Frye won the 400 meter dash and was part of the first place 4×100 meter relay team and Tumwater sophomore Peyton Russell took home titles in long jump and triple jump.

And area wrestlers didn’t fare too bad. Jake Grantham took home the 3A 220 pound weight class title for North Thurston, Rochester’s Lucas Eastman won a 1A title in the 152 pound class, Yelm’s Darren Harris won the 4A 120 pound class title and Tumwater’s Megan Johnson won the 155 pound girls title.

Below are all the league champions, teams that participated in state tournaments and individuals that placed 5th place or higher. State champions are in italics.

Malroy Takes Over Evergreen Men’s Hoops Program

Lost in the high school sports madness that was Friday was the announcement from The Evergreen State College that they have hired a new men’s basketball coach.

Olympia High School graduate and former South Puget Sound Community College women’s basketball head coach Tim Malroy becomes the fifth head coach in Geoducks history. Malroy comes from Green River Community College where he spent the last ten seasons in the same position compiling a 114-147 record, one appearance in the NWAACC Championships and two winning seasons. This season, the Gators went 10-15 overall and finished fifth with a 7-9 record in the nine team NWAACC West.

Malroy takes over an Evergreen program that has made some small improvements since bottoming out with a 1-26 season in 2011-2012. The Geoducks won two games during the 2012-2013 season and doubled their win total and were far more competitive last season. Since Jeff Drinkwine stepped down after an NAIA national tournament appearance in 2010, the Arvin Mosley Jr. led Geoducks went just 15-91.

The SPSCC women went 40-41 in his three years leading the program and appeared in the NWAACC tournament in 2002 and 2003.

Squalicum 4, Capital 0
Storm (21-0-2 overall), Cougars (21-3 overall)

After three straight dramatic 1-0 wins, Capital ran into a buzzsaw. Squalicum exploded for four second half goals including a 42nd minute and a 50th minute goal by freshman Tyler Hughes to claim the 2A state championship at Sunset Chevy Stadium in Sumner.

Zachary Wallace scored in the 59th minute and Gabe Guidroz scored a late capper and the Storm finished the season unbeaten with a 21-0-2 record. The Bellingham school allowed just five goals all season and outscored their opponents 30-0 in the postseason.

Capital snapped a five game winning streak with the loss and appeared to be worn down after playing 90 minutes in Friday night’s semifinal game. The Cougars managed just two shots on goal and fell to 21-3 on the season. The second place finish is the best finish for Capital boys soccer. The previous best was fourth place in 2010.

The T-Birds (22-4) get a Kangs team that is 16-9 overall but have won six straight and outscored their opponents in the postseason 35-6. They mercy ruled both of their regionals opponents, North Kitsap and Archbishop Murphy, and are led by John Lyon both on the mound and at the plate.
