High School Football Power Rankings: Bears, Wolves, Hawks and T-Birds Remain Unbeaten
Olympia finally gave up some meaningful points allowing 25 to Timberline and actually had a close game on their hands until the third quarter. But eventually they poured it on and recorded their highest point total of the season with a 49-25 win. That gives them 180 point so far this season with two weeks of games coming up that don’t suggest that they will be slowed down soon. With that, they get the top spot in this week’s power rankings.
Oly, Black Hills, River Ridge and Tumwater are all undefeated with favorable schedules for the next couple weeks. Except for Black Hills, who face historic league power WF West this week in Chehalis.
——————————————–
1. Olympia Bears (4-0 overall, 2-0 4A Narrows)
Last week: #1 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Timberline, 49-25
Next game: vs. Issaquah (2-2 overall) – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Oly has so many weapons. Scott Gunther, David Woodward, Jayden Toussaint, etc. They did allow Timberline to get with nine points in the third quarter but quickly put them in their rear view after that. Oly gets a non-league game with Issaquah this week and Stadium after before they face Gig Harbor and Bellarmine in back-to-back weeks.
2. Black Hills Wolves (4-0 overall)
Last week: #2 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Columbia River, 46-20
Next game: @ WF West (2-2 overall) – Bearcat Stadium, Chehalis – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Black Hills continues to roll and have now beaten three teams that have appeared in the AP football poll at one point or another this season. That’s all well and good, but league play is here with a trip to Chehalis on tap. WF West sits at just 2-2, but other than a 35 point loss to West Valley, have given up just 27 points to decent teams.
3. River Ridge Hawks (4-0 overall, 2-0 2A SPSL)
Last week: #3 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Orting, 35-14
Next game: vs. White River (0-4 overall, 0-2 2A SPSL) – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Orting looked like the team to beat and River Ridge did just that. And with that, it looks like the Hawks are on a collision course with Fife late in the season. White River comes in this week at 0-4.
4. Tumwater T-Birds (4-0 overall)
Last week: #4 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Lake City, Idaho – 35-21
Next game: vs. Columbia River (2-2 overall) – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: T-Birds are the #1 team in the state and undefeated but we knew that would happen, especially with a relatively easy schedule. The lack of surprise keeps them at #4 despite those high rankings. Their best offensive player, Easton Trakel, still hasn’t taken the field yet.
5. Tenino Beavers (3-1 overall, 1-1 2A/1A Evergreen)
Last week: #8 (+3)
Previous game: Beat Elma, 39-20
Next game: vs. Forks (2-2 overall, 1-1 2A/1A Evergreen) – Tenino Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Tenino took it to previously unbeaten Elma on Friday night to bounce back from their loss to Hoquiam the week before. Thomas Pier ran for 212 yards and three TDs and will likely continue to run wild this week against Forks.
6. Rainier Mountaineers (3-1 overall, 2-1 2B Pacific)
Last week: #7 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Ocosta, 59-19
Next game: @ North Beach (4-0 overall, 3-0 2B Pacific) – North Beach HS, Ocean Shores – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Rainier continued to run past the bottom half of the 2B Pacific burying Ocosta 59-19. Next up, though, is a trip to the Ocean where they will run into the #3 team in the state. While highly unlikely, it isn’t completely out of the question that you might see an upset, which is really saying something for the Mountaineers.
7. North Thurston Rams (2-2 overall, 1-1 3A Narrows)
Last week: #5 (-2)
Previous game: Lost to Central Kitsap, 23-22
Next game: @ Foss (0-4 overall, 0-2 3A Narrows) – Mount Tahoma Stadium, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: A very close loss to Central Kitsap moved the Rams back to the 3A Narrows pack at 1-1. They should pick up an easy win this weekend against Foss.
8. Capital Cougars (1-3 overall, 1-1 3A Narrows)
Last week: #11 (+3)
Previous game: Beat Foss, 46-14
Next game: @ Central Kitsap (2-2 overall, 2-0 3A Narrows) – Silverdale Stadium – Friday, 7:30 PM
Notes: Capital got their first win over a bad Foss squad, this time scoring 46 and winning after scoring 46 and losing to Lincoln the week before. The Cougars have showed that they can put up some points over the past two weeks and with the 3A Narrows proving to be mediocre this season after Lincoln, they can easily make some noise the rest of the way. A win over Central Kitsap would put them in the drivers seat for the #2 spot in league.
9. Shelton Highclimbers (2-2 overall, 1-1 3A Narrows)
Last week: #6 (-3)
Previous game: Lost to Lincoln, 54-3
Next game: @ Wilson (1-3 overall, 1-1 3A Narrows) – Stadium Bowl, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: No shame in getting trounced by Lincoln – who might be better than last season under Jon Kitna. And the middle pack of the 3A Narrows is very winable for the Highclimbers. They could take second in league, they could fall to sixth. Hard to tell. This week’s game at struggling Wilson will be a big measuring stick.
10. Rochester Warriors (2-2 overall, 1-1 2A/1A Evergreen)
Last week: #12 (+2)
Previous game: Beat Forks, 49-7
Next game: vs. Aberdeen (0-4 overall, 0-2 2A/1A Evergreen) – Rochester HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Always nice to go up to Forks and get a win and a bad Aberdeen team comes to town this week.
11. Timberline Blazers (1-3 overall, 1-1 4A Narrows)
Last week: #10 (+1)
Previous game: Lost to Olympia, 49-25
Next game: @ Bellarmine (3-1 overall, 1-0 4A Narrows – Memorial Stadium, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Big loss to Olympia with Bellarmine looming and Gig Harbor after that. Brutal. Probably the toughest schedule over the first five weeks of anybody and that win over Yelm keeps them out of the cellar.
12. Yelm Tornadoes (3-1 overall, 1-1 4A Narrows)
Last week: #10 (-2)
Previous game: Beat South Kitsap, 49-29
Next game: vs. Stadium (1-3 overall, 0-2 4A Narrows) – Yelm HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Yelm, Yelm, Yelm. I’m not sure what to do with you. Yeah, you sit at 3-1 overall and are coming off a big win but that loss to Timberline has thrown me for a loop. I can’t rank you ahead of them and I can’t rank them ahead of anybody else with that 1-3 record. So you find yourself in the #12 spot despite all your wins. A rejuvenated Stadium squad comes to town in what should be a really interesting game.

High School Football Power Rankings: T-Birds and Hawks Then Everyone Else
Well, the mediocrity that I expected out of this local football season has started to take hold.
Last week, Tumwater and River Ridge got big wins while Capital, Yelm and North Thurston each picked up Ws but didn’t exactly do it convincingly. Well, North Thurston did. They knocked off a suspect Foss team 51-0 for their first win of the season.
Other than that, Olympia somehow got blown out by Issaquah, Timberline lost their second straight game and their quarterback and Tenino continued their skid. Bleh!
Note: This week’s ranking features some of the ScoreCzar predictions for each game. Thanks as always to the wonderful ScoreCzar computers.
——————————————–
1. Tumwater T-Birds (5-0)
Last week: #1 (No change)
Previous game: Beat Columbia River, 62-6
Next game: vs. Centralia (4-1) – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Tumwater 30, Centralia 13
Notes: Well, Tumwater has certainly hit their stride. They didn’t just beat the #8 team in 3A, they demolished them. And just a week after they demolished one of the best teams in all of Idaho. Hard to imagine Tumwater being challenged until they meet one of the three other top teams in the state in the playoffs: Prosser, Ellensburg or #1 Lynden. 2A EvCo play starts this weekend when they host Centralia.
2. River Ridge Hawks (4-1 overall, 2-1 2A SPSL)
Last week: #3 (+1)
Previous game: Beat White River, 44-0
Next game: vs. Washington (2-3) – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: River Ridge 33, Washington 6
Notes: Another big win for the Hawks put them at 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the SPSL, one game behind Fife and Franklin Pierce. This week they host Washington, who is 1-2 in league and coming off of a 46-14 win over Clover Park.
3. Capital Cougars (3-2 overall, 2-1 3A Narrows)
Last week: #5 (+2)
Previous game: Beat Central Kitsap, 3-0 in OT
Next game: @ Wilson (5-0) – Stadium Bowl, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Wilson 26, Capital 13
Notes: Hard to move a team up two places after a 3-0 win over a mediocre Central Kitsap team, but such is the mediocrity of local football right now. Capital’s defense IS worth a #3 spot, though, as they continue to play tough. Their only blemish is the Lincoln game and that can be excuses considering what Lincoln has done to other teams lately. But their biggest test comes this weekend when they face Wilson. The Rams did not play a great game at Shelton and despite their 5-0 record, they haven’t played anybody of quality yet and certainly no defense like Capital’s.
4. Olympia Bears (3-2 overall, 2-0 4A Narrows)
Last week: #2 (-2)
Previous game: Lost to Issaquah, 28-7
Next game: vs. Stadium (0-5) – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Olympia 32, Stadium 3
Notes: There is no team more confounding than these Bears. Absolutely dominate all aspects of the game against Timberline and then drop a 21 point decision to previously 1-3 Issaquah? Got me. They should get right against Stadium this week but it seems like anything could happen this season.
5. Rainier Mountaineers (3-2 overall, 2-2 in 2B Pacific)
Last week: #4 (-1)
Previous game: Lost to North Beach, 44-7
Next game: vs. Tacoma Baptist (0-5) – Rainier HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: N/A
Notes: Well, no shame in losing to North Beach. But that makes all of these upcoming games for Rainier especially important. This week they get 0-5 Tacoma Baptist who forfeited their first two games and has only scored 13 points in their other three games. They have a date with third place Life Christian coming up next Saturday.
6. Timberline Blazers (2-3 overall, 1-2 4A Narrows)
Last week: #6 (No change)
Previous game: Lost to Bellarmine, 29-22
Next game: @ Gig Harbor (4-1) – Roy Anderson Field, Gig Harbor – Thursday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Gig Harbor 35, Timberline 8
Notes: This tough patch for the Blazers isn’t going so well so far with back to back losses to Olympia and Bellarmine with Gig Harbor coming up tonight. And word has it that Gabe Gutierrez is out for the Tides game and the Blazers will start a freshman quarterback. Yeesh.
7. Yelm Tornadoes (3-2 overall, 1-2 4A Narrows)
Last week: #10 (+3)
Previous game: Beat Stadium, 16-6
Next game: vs. Evergreen (2-3) – Yelm HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Evergreen 23, Yelm 21
Notes: Yelm only jumps up three spots because they won and the teams below them, other than North Thurston, all lost. That’s not to say that their 16-6 win over lowly Stadium is impressive. It isn’t. But at least they pulled it out. They take a break from conference play and take on Evergreen this week.
8. North Thurston Rams (1-4, 1-2 3A Narrows)
Last week: #12 (+4)
Previous game: Beat Foss, 51-0
Next game: @ Lincoln (5-0) – Lincoln Bowl, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Lincoln 47, North Thurston 7
Notes: A 51 point outburst got the Rams their first win of the season and gave them a huge boost in these power rankings. However, they have to face Lincoln on Friday night in Tacoma so the shoe will likely be on the other foot.
9. Tenino Beavers (2-3 overall, 0-3 2A/1A Evergreen)
Last week: #7 (-2)
Previous game: Lost to Forks, 20-19
Next game: vs. Aberdeen (1-4) – Tenino Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: N/A
Notes: Oh boy, after topping out at #4 in the AP 1A poll, the Beavers have lost three straight games and fell to 0-3 in conference play after being nipped by Forks up on the Peninsula. Can they get right against 2A Aberdeen at home this week? Who knows.
10. Rochester Warriors (2-3 overall, 1-2 2A/1A Evergreen)
Last week: #8 (-2)
Previous game: Lost to Aberdeen, 29-28
Next game: vs. Eatonville (5-0) – Rochester HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: N/A
Notes: The Warriors still haven’t beaten a 2A team after their loss to previously winless Aberdeen on Friday night. The Warriors are definitely out of the playoff picture and get to face an unbeaten Eatonville this week.
11. Black Hills Wolves (2-3 overall, 0-1 2A EvCo)
Last week: #9 (-2)
Previous game: Lost to WF West, 26-7
Next game: @ Port Angeles (3-2) – Civic Field, Port Angeles – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: N/A
Notes: Three straight losses for the Wolves and none bigger than dropping their 2A EvCo opener to WF West. Interesting to see what happens to them up in Port Angeles on Friday where they take on a much improved Roughriders team.
12. Shelton Highclimbers (1-4 overall, 0-3 3A Narrows)
Last week: #12 (-1)
Previous game: Lost to Wilson, 35-20
Next game: @ Central Kitsap (2-3) – Silverdale Stadium – Friday, 5:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Central Kitsap 30, Shelton 7
Notes: The Highclimbers played their best half in probably two seasons and then played their most disappointing half in two seasons against Wilson. They actually held a 20-14 halftime lead but turned the ball over four times in the second half en route to a 35-20 loss.

SHEL: Brian Nault – 2 TDS (1 rushing, 1 receiving) |
The Shelton Highclimbers played their best half of football in two seasons since Ralph Kinne and David Ajamu graduated in 2011.
Jake Henry ran for 101 yards in the first half including a two yard touchdown run on the first drive of the game to give the Highclimbers a 7-0 lead. Following a disastrous first possession for Wilson that featured a bad snap on first down, a penalty and a bobbled punt, Brian Nault cashed in with a ten yard touchdown catch from quarterback Jake Beck and Shelton took a surprising 14-0 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter.
The Rams answered back with an efficient six play drive capped off by Zavia Frazier’s first touchdown of the night, an easy ten yard scamper on a screen pass from quarterback Julius Yates-Brown.
But the Highclimbers offense continued to have their way with the Wilson defense. Jake Henry converted a pair of third down runs and Nault scored his second touchdown on a six yard dive straight up the middle giving Shelton a 20-7 lead with 8:16 left in the first half.
Two plays later, Yates-Brown took a quarterback keeper 43 yards to the house for the first of 28 unanswered points for the Rams.
Wilson dodged a bullet when Brandon Scarpaci intercepted Beck in the end zone and despite multiple mistakes and a Shelton team playing the best they have played in a long time, the Rams trailed by just six, 20-14, at the half.
After two defensive stops to start the third quarter and with the lead, Shelton decided to air it out. Frazier picked off Beck and took it back 58 yards for the pick six and Wilson took their first lead, 21-20, with 28 second left in the third quarter. The Highclimbers turned the ball over four times in the second half and following a fumble on a bad exchange between Beck and Henry, Frazier broke an impressive 35 yard run that gave Wilson a 28-20 lead.
Frazier finished it off with a 13 yard touchdown run four minutes later after Beck was picked off on first down. Frazier finished with 171 yards rushing and two TDs on the ground, one receiving and one interception return for a TD.
Wilson stayed undefeated moving to 3-0 in the 3A Narrows League and 5-0 overall while Shelton fell to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in league.

Week 5: My Girls’ Expert High School Football Picks
My three year old daughter struggled to a 3-6 record last week and now sits at 15-14 for the season. She makes her picks, in pretty epic fashion if you ask me, today without her sister.
Here is the full schedule of football games today with radio information and of course Rory’s expert picks…
————-
Tumwater T-Birds @ Columbia River Chieftains
Chieftains Stadium, Vancouver – 7:00 PM – Webcast: Eli Sports
Rory’s pick: Chieftains – “They will try to shoot them with their bows and arrow. The T-Birds will say ‘hayahayahayahaya ahhhhhh’ and they will fly away.”
Olympia Bears @ Issaquah Eagles
Issaquah HS – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Eagles – “The Eagles would jump up and eat them up up up the other team up up up. Actually they would eat a bone and go ‘gwomp gwomp gowmp’ and then they would be all done and would go ‘ohhh, we’re all done’ and the Eagle would go ‘ah’ and they would win. Actually the Bears would go all the way on that roof and dance with a piano. And the Eagles would win and they would sing ‘they are on their way to….we are on our way to Disneyland.”
River Ridge Hawks @ White River Hornets
White River HS – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Hawks – “The Hawks would go ‘PFFFFT – I’m OVER HERE’ and the other team would go ‘Mah’ and would go all the way up on an airplane and go ‘ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh’ and would be scared to get down. And they would fly to California and the bluebirds would be in there going ‘poo poo booo poooo boo’ and the 7D would be going ‘bing bong bing bong, bing bing bing goo’ and then they would eat dinner with somebody. They would eat burritos with Sleepy and Dopey and Dopey would jump off and eat Fluffy’s burrito.”
Rainier Mountaineers vs. North Beach Hyaks
Rainier HS – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Hyaks – “They would blow away them and the Mountaineers would go ‘ahhhh poo poo!'”
Capital Cougars vs. Central Kitsap Cougars
Ingersoll Stadium – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Tie – “They would go ahhhhh and the babies would wrestle and the mommies would wrestle and the daddies would wrestle.”
Timberline Blazers vs. Bellarmine Lions
South Sound Stadium – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Lions – “They would jump up and EAT THEM!”
Tenino Beavers @ Forks Spartans
Forks HS – 7:00 PM – Radio: Forks 1490
Rory’s pick: Beavers – “They would go up to a tree and the Spartans would be standing in front of the tree and then the tree would go right down on top of the Spartans.”
Rochester Warriors @ Aberdeen Bobcats
Stewart Field, Aberdeen – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Bobcats – “They would jump up and eat them and go ‘grrrrrrr….chomp chomp chomp chomp’ and the baby Bobcat would eat a baby Warrior.”
Black Hills Wolves vs. WF West Bearcats
Tumwater Stadium – 7:00 PM – Radio: KELA
Rory’s pick: Bearcats – “They would eat them eat them eat them eat them all up. The Bearcats would be as big as that school bus and they would kills the little tiny Wolves by shaking their tail and they would go ‘ahhhhhhhh…POOPY FACE’ and then run away.”
Yelm Tornadoes @ Stadium Tigers
Stadium Bowl, Tacoma – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Tornadoes – “The Tiger would swirl in the Tornado and they would go ‘HOLY MACKEREL, CHEESE AND CRACKERS!’ and then they would go to a different city. They would go to Kansas City.”
Shelton Highclimbers vs. Wilson Rams
Highclimbers Stadium – 7:00 PM – Radio: 1030 AM and 92.9 FM KMAS
Rory’s pick: Highclimbers – “They would punch the Ram and he would cry, cry, cry, cry. But the other team would go ‘WHERE’S MY BURRITO, WHERE’S MY BURRITO’ because the Rams took the other team’s burrito because they would go ‘haba haba hopscotch, haba haba hopscotch’ and then the donkey would come and give them another burrito. And then the 7D would come. Sleepy would just sleep on the roof.”
High School Football Power Rankings: Bears Make a Big Jump; Blazers, Beavers Tumble
The Tumwater T-Birds cemented their place atop the Oly Sports power rankings with a convincing win over a really good group of Idahoans. And the Bears made a huge leap after their absolutely dominating performance over Timberline that totally flipped my thinking on this season.
Big games coming up this week include Tumwater at Columbia River, Rainier vs. North Beach and Timberline hosts Bellarmine. We might have even more movement in next week’s power rankings.
Note: This week’s ranking feature the ScoreCzar predictions for each game. Thanks as always to the wonderful ScoreCzar computers.
——————————————–
1. Tumwater T-Birds (4-0)
Last week: #1 (No change)
Previous game: Beat Lake City (Idaho), 49-24
Next game: @ Columbia River (4-0) – Chieftain Stadium, Vancouver – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Columbia River 26, Tumwater 23
Notes: The T-Birds passed a big test on Friday with their 49-24 win over Lake City of Couer D’Alene that wasn’t even as close as the score indicates. Big credit to their defense that stopped a high powered team that had been running all over very good teams. But now they make the drive to Vancouver to take on the #6 team in 3A, Columbia River, who have outscored their opponents 148-27 so far this season.
2. Olympia Bears (3-1 overall, 2-0 4A Narrows)
Last week: #8 (+6)
Previous game: Beat Timberline, 38-6
Next game: @ Issaquah (1-3) – Issaquah HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Olympia 31, Issaquah 6
Notes: Wow, that was an impressive performance by the Bears. They absolutely dominated Timberline from start to finish. Running back Isaiah Brooks was fantastic again and this was QB Kaden Wilson’s breakout game. And the defense didn’t allow Gabe Gutierrez and the speedy Blazers offense to do anything. It was a shocking result and I was so impressed that I had to jump the Bears all the way up to the #2 spot.
3. River Ridge Hawks (3-1 overall, 1-1 2A SPSL)
Last week: #4 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Orting, 40-31
Next game: @ White River (1-3) – White River HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: River Ridge 29, White River 7
Notes: After a late loss to Franklin Pierce, the Hawks got back on track with a 40-31 win over Orting (they are 1-1 against Cardinal teams this season). They now are in a gridlock at 1-1 in the 2A SPSL one game behind Franklin Pierce and Fife with a game against 1-3 White River looming on Friday.
4. Rainier Mountaineers (3-1 overall, 2-1 in 2B Pacific)
Last week: #5 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Ocosta, 25-2
Next game: vs. North Beach (4-0) – Rainier HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: North Beach 30, Rainier 0
Notes: The Mountaineers also got right this week with their 25-2 win over Ocosta. They have punished the lower ranks of the 2B Pacific league and haven’t allowed an offensive touchdown and just two safeties to South Bend and Ocosta. But next they host North Beach, who knocked off Raymond in overtime on Friday and Saturday (a bad transformer forced a delay), and are 4-0 this season.
5. Capital Cougars (2-2 overall, 1-1 3A Narrows)
Last week: #7 (+2)
Previous game: Beat Foss, 32-13
Next game: vs. Central Kitsap (2-2) – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Capital 16, Central Kitsap 15
Notes: Another team back on the right track. The Cougars took care of business against a struggling Foss team and now draw another Cougars squad in Central Kitsap that is also 2-2 but have only beaten a bad Mount Tahoma team and just barely beat 0-4 North Thurston.
6. Timberline Blazers (2-2 overall, 1-1 4A Narrows)
Last week: #2 (-4)
Previous game: Lost to Olympia 38-6
Next game: vs. Bellarmine (3-1) – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Bellarmine 32, Timberline 8
Notes: What in the world happened to the Blazers? I’m still struggling to process what I saw on Friday in their loss to Olympia. They were dominated in every aspect of the game and didn’t look anything like the team that nearly beat Tumwater two weeks earlier. They will have to respond in the middle of their toughest stretch. First up, Bellarmine, who is 3-1 this season with their only loss coming to Gonzaga Prep, 17-0. On the plus side for the Blazers, the combined record of the three teams the Lions have beaten is 1-11.
7. Tenino Beavers (2-2 overall, 0-2 2A/1A Evergreen)
Last week: #3 (-4)
Previous game: Lost to Elma, 44-14
Next game: @ Forks (1-3) – Forks HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Tenino 25, Forks 16
Notes: After marching up the 1A rankings and topping out at #4, the Beavers have plummeted out of the top ten with losses to Hoquiam (OK, it happens) and Elma (44-14? WHAAA?). Next up, Forks, never an easy trip.
8. Rochester Warriors (2-2 overall, 1-1 2A/1A Evergreen)
Last week: #10 (+2)
Previous game: Beat Forks, 25-18
Next game: @ Aberdeen (0-4) – Stewart Field, Aberdeen – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Rochester 32, Aberdeen 8
Notes: Rochester ground out another tough win with a 25-18 win over Forks. They are now 2-0 against 1A teams and 0-2 against 2A teams. On Friday, they travel to Aberdeen to take on another 2A school, albeit a bad Bobcats team that has been outscored 183-27 in four losses.
9. Black Hills Wolves (2-2 overall)
Last week: #6 (-3)
Previous game: Lost to Columbia River, 45-7
Next game: vs. WF West – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: WF West 21, Black Hills 20
Notes: The Wolves were beaten up pretty good in Vancouver against a highly ranked 3A team in Columbia River and now they get to open up 2A EvCo play against WF West. Every game in conference is important and none more than this game against the Bearcats.
10. Yelm Tornadoes (2-2 overall, 0-2 4A Narrows)
Last week: #8 (-2)
Previous game: Lost to South Kitsap, 20-19
Next game: @ Stadium (0-4) – Stadium Bowl, Tacoma – 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Yelm 35, Stadium 9
Notes: Poor Yelm. Beaten on the last play of the game against South Kitsap. They fell to 0-2 in the 4A Narrows with their toughest games yet to play. But not this week, they should get a win and should have some fun against Stadium.
11. Shelton Highclimbers (1-3 overall, 0-2 3A Narrows)
Last week: #11 (No change)
Previous game: Lost to Lincoln, 62-0
Next game: vs. Wilson (4-0) – Highclimbers Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Scoreczar prediction: Wilson 40, Shelton 3
Notes: A 62-0 loss to Lincoln isn’t surprising as the Shelton sidelines basically became a M.A.S.H. unit in the loss. Now they get another undefeated and high powered team in Wilson and might have to do it without a handful of their first string players.
12. North Thurston Rams (0-4, 0-2 3A Narrows)
Last week: #12 (No change)
Previous game: Lost to Central Kitsap, 30-27
Next game: vs. Foss (1-3) – South Sound Stadium – Thursday, 7:15 PM
Scoreczar prediction: North Thurston 23, Foss 22
Notes: The Rams are 0-4!? My alma mater is 0-4!? They came close in Silverdale but couldn’t get the job done and now face a Foss team that looks to be close to their level. Get one Rams!

Week 4: My Girls’ Expert High School Football Picks
Last week Addie (my six year old daughter)went 6-4 while Rory (my three year old daughter) went 4-6. Addie is now 10-10 this season while Rory has her bested at 12-8.
They are back once again this week with their expert picks. So here is the full Friday Night Lights schedule with radio information and the best picks from a three year old and a six year old that money can buy…
————-
Tumwater T-Birds vs. Lake City (Idaho) Timberwolves
Tumwater Stadium – 7:00 PM – Webcast: Eli Sports
Rory’s pick: Timberwolves – “Because they will hop up and eat ’em. That’s all.”
Addie’s pick: T-Birds – “They’d come down and when they were running for the ball and bouncing up and down, the T-Birds would land on their back and poke them and then they’d do a really funny dance.”
Timberline Blazers @ Olympia Bears
Ingersoll Stadium – 7:00 PM – Radio: KMAS 92.9 FM
Rory’s pick: Bears – “They would stop on their back and put their claws in their back and poke them with their sharp claws.”
Addie’s pick: Blazers – “They will cut down and tree, and the Bears will yell ‘Uh oh, Spaghetti O’s!’ and run back into the woods.
Tenino Beavers vs. Elma Eagles
Tenino Stadium – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Beavers – “Where the Eagles were living there, the Beavers would bite on their trees and the tree would fall down and the birds would get….dead. That’s all.”
Addie’s pick: Beavers – “When the Eagles are walking around trying to find food on the ground, the Beavers will walk over and say softly ‘uh oh, Spaghetti-O’s, there are those Eagles’ and then they will cut down a tree and the Eagles will yell ‘gahhhhh’ and run in every direction.
River Ridge Hawks vs. Orting Cardinals
South Sound Stadium – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Cardinals – “They will chirp a lot and the Hawks will scream ‘THAT’S LOUD, THAT’S LOUD’ and they would fly away from home.”
Addie’s pick: Cardinals – “They would say ‘hey, let’s go sneak up on the them” then they would fly very softly over to the other team and then in their ears go ‘BAHHHHHHHHHHH’. Then the Hawks would go ‘AHHHH’ and fly over the ocean to another state.”
Rainier Mountaineers @ Ocosta Wildcats
Ocosta HS, Westport – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Wildcats – “They would go running and running and running and they would knock down the other team like bowling pins.”
Addie’s pick: Wildcats – “The Wildcats will already be on the mountain and then they will run so fast that they get to the Mountaineers and grab all their Mountaineering stuff and jump on to a rock and drop it.”
Black Hills Wolves @ Columbia River Chieftains
Chieftain Stadium, Vancouver – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Wolves – “They would run, run, run, run, run all the way and would howl at the moon going “AWWOOOOO” and they would go whisper ‘awooooo’ and then they would run down the mountain and they would knock down the Chieftains and they would be dead.”
Addie’s pick: Chieftains – “They will already be ready for the Wolves to come and they will go ‘FIRE’ and all the arrows will fire at the Wolves and the Wolves would go ‘UH OH, SPAGHETTI-O’S’ and run back up the mountain and into their own touchdown.”
Capital Cougars @ Foss Falcons
Mount Tahoma Stadium, Tacoma – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Cougars – “They would run up and bite the birds.”
Addie’s pick: Cougars – “They would climb up a tree where the birds nest is but they wouldn’t have any babies so they wouldn’t eat the babies and when the Falcons came back they would say ‘uh oh’ and kick the nest down.”
Yelm Tornadoes vs. South Kitsap Wolves
Yelm HS – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Wolves – “They would run up and whisper ‘ahhhh, awoooo’ and they would go down a tiny, tiny hill and ride a tricycle and knock them down.”
Addie’s pick: Tornadoes – “When the Wolves tried to do what Rory said, the Tornadoes would go ‘RRRRR’ and the Wolves would go ‘WHOA WHOA WHOA’ inside the Tornado.”
Rochester Warriors vs. Forks Spartans
Rochester HS – 7:00 PM – Radio: Forks1490
Rory’s pick: Spartans – “They would use their forks and poke them in the eyeball.”
Addie’s pick: Spartans – “They would be holding their forks backwards, but they wouldn’t poke them, they’d just push them backwards until they scored a touchdown.”
Shelton Highclimbers @ Lincoln Abes
Lincoln Bowl, Tacoma – 7:00 PM
Rory’s pick: Abes – “The other team would do the wrong thing and Abraham Lincoln would call the police and the police would arrest them.”
Addie’s pick: Highclimbers – “The Abes would tell them to not cut down anymore trees but they would do the opposite and the tree would fall on Abraham Lincoln and he would say ‘I need a bunch of wrestlers to get this off of me!”
High School Football Power Rankings: T-Birds Still at #1, Blazers Jump Beavers for Second
Last week I talked about how I expected a mediocre season from the majority of the teams in the Olympia area before the season started. Last week I said that I was pleasantly surprised at the quality so far.
That was before the locals went 4-8 over the weekend and previously unbeaten Tenino, River Ridge, Black Hills, Rainier and Yelm all dropped their first games. That sends the power rankings into disarray making it nearly impossible to move anybody up or down despite wins and losses.
——————————————–
1. Tumwater T-Birds (3-0)
Last week: #1 (No change)
Previous game: Beat La Center, 41-0
Next game: vs. Lake City, ID – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Not to take anything away from the T-Birds, but they did mop up on a 1A school on Friday night. Granted La Center has been a good 1A team but the difference between 2A and 1A is so great, it’s hard to believe they ever play each other. But the T-Birds are 3-0 and now face what will likely be their toughest opponent until they get to the state semifinals. Lake City of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho are 4-0 and are coming off of a 56-34 dismantling of ranked Shadle Park and their star quarterback Brett Rypien.
2. Timberline Blazers (2-1 overall, 1-0 4A Narrows)
Last week: #3 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Yelm, 31-7
Next game: @ Olympia – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: With convincing wins over River Ridge and Yelm and a shoestring loss to the mighty Tumwater T-Birds, Timberline is looking good. But now they head into the meat of the 4A Narrows League with three weeks of unbelievably tough games. First up, Olympia on Friday night at Ingersoll Stadium then Bellarmine and Gig Harbor. I hate to say a game is a must win, but this game against Oly seems like a must win with the Lions and Tides looming large.
3. Tenino Beavers (2-1 overall, 0-1 2A/1A Evergreen)
Last week: #3 (-1)
Previous game: Lost to Hoquiam, 36-21
Next game: vs. Elma – Tenino Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Really not sure what to think about the loss to Hoquiam. Just a hiccup early in the season or a sign of what is to come throughout the grind of the 2A/1A Evergreen season? They should get right against Elma this week.
4. River Ridge Hawks (2-1 overall, 0-1 2A SPSL)
Last week: #4 (No change)
Previous game: Lost to Franklin Pierce, 16-14
Next game: vs. Orting – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The 2A SPSL will be even more intriguing after Franklin Pierce got a late field goal to knock off the speedy Hawks on Friday night. In a league that looks to be pretty even overall, the Hawks will need a win over an Orting team that might be better than their 1-2 record indicates.
5. Rainier Mountaineers (2-1 overall, 1-1 in 2B Pacific)
Last week: #5 (No change)
Previous game: Lost to Raymond, 42-0
Next game: @ Ocosta – Ocosta HS, Westport – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Welcome back to earth, Rainier. The first two weeks gave me a lot of confidence that the Mountaineers could compete with the two big names in the 2B Pacific but a 42-0 loss to Raymond showed you where this program is probably at. Still, I think they will likely be the third best team in the league behind Raymond and North Beach. Next up they get Ocosta. They were beaten 60-0 by a team that usually plays 8-man football, Neah Bay, and lost 50-0 to Life Christian before knocking off Chief Leschi 33-18 last week.
6. Black Hills Wolves (2-1 overall)
Last week: #6 (No change)
Previous game: Lost to North Kitsap, 26-7
Next game: @ Columbia River – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Wolves got beat by a ranked North Kitsap team and Chase Morrow finally looked human.
7. Capital Cougars (1-2 overall, 0-1 3A Narrows)
Last week: #7 (No change)
Previous game: Lost to Lincoln, 32-10
Next game: @ Foss – Mount Tahoma Stadium, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The difficulty of the first three weeks finally caught up to the Cougars as they struggled to stop the high powered Lincoln offense. They should get a little bit of a reprieve when they face Foss on Friday night.
8. Olympia Bears (2-1 overall, 1-0 4A Narrows)
Last week: #9 (+1)
Previous game: Beat South Kitsap, 34-17
Next game: vs. Timberline – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: A nice win for the Bears knocking off South K in Port Orchard. Isaiah Brooks is one of the breakout stars of the season putting up 236 yards and two TDs last week. I’m looking forward to seeing how they deal with Gabe Gutierrez and Timberline on Friday night.
9. Yelm Tornadoes (2-1 overall, 0-1 4A Narrows)
Last week: #8 (-1)
Previous game: Lost to Timberline, 31-7
Next game: vs. South Kitsap – Yelm HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Tornadoes have started quickly for three straight years but once they hit league play, it all comes crashing down. Facing Timberline in the league opener didn’t help. They hope to rebound at home against South Kitsap.
10. Rochester Warriors (1-2 overall, 1-0 2A/1A Evergreen)
Last week: #12 (+2)
Previous game: Beat Elma, 18-14
Next game: vs. Forks – Rochester HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Hard to get too excited about 2A Rochester beating 1A Elma 18-14 but a win is a win and Wyatt Singer had an outstanding game going for over 230 yards with two touchdowns.
11. Shelton Highclimbers (1-2 overall, 0-1 3A Narrows)
Last week: #10 (-1)
Previous game: Lost to Foss, 26-13
Next game: @ Lincoln – Lincoln Bowl, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Highclimbers were competitive in this game and that’s a big difference from where they were last year. Still, the play calling was frustrating and the surprising lack of urgency at the end of the game was a head scratcher. They could have beaten Foss if not for some key penalties. They next head to Lincoln, which could be ugly.
12. North Thurston Rams (0-3, 0-1 3A Narrows)
Last week: #11 (-1)
Previous game: Lost to Wilson, 47-21
Next game: @ Central Kitsap – Silverdale Stadium – Thursday, 7:15 PM
Notes: North Thurston looked like they had turned things around after one half of football against Wilson taking a 21-6 lead into the locker room. But the Rams from Tacoma reeled off 41 unanswered points and the Rams of Lacey fell to 0-3 for the first time since 1984. 1984?!
