Friday Football Scores: Rough Go For Locals
It was a rough night for the 10 local high school football teams as they went 3-7 with previously unbeaten Tenino, Rainier, River Ridge and Black Hills all falling.

Week 3: My Girls’ Expert High School Football Picks
After a week off, my girls are back with their expert analysis of local high school football games. In week one, the three year old – Rory – went an amazing 8-2. Wow, nice work. Addie, the six year old, went just 4-6. Come on, kid.
Here is the full schedule of local football games complete with radio (which surprisingly is very light this week) and of course the best picks in all of the land.
————-
Tumwater T-Birds vs. La Center Wildcats
Tumwater Stadium – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Wildcats – “The T-Birds will peck on the Wildcats.”
Rory’s pick: T-Birds – “Because the Wildcats will eat the other ones.”
Tenino Beavers vs. Hoquiam Grizzlies
Tenino Stadium – 7:00 PM – Radio: KXRO
Addie’s pick: Beavers – “The Beavers will chop down a tree and go ‘grrrrr….I win.’ And then dance around and then find another tree and cut it down.”
Rory’s pick: Beavers – “The Beavers go vwoooooooo and bite them.”
River Ridge Hawks @ Franklin Pierce Cardinals
Franklin Pierce HS, Tacoma – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Cardinals – “They will peck the Hawks. They will see the Hawks and say ‘want a tasty treat?’ And then start pecking them.”
Rory’s pick: Hawks – “Because they will go grrrrr and go chirp, chirp, and go rarararara.”
Rainier Mountaineers vs. Raymond Seagulls
Rainier HS – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Seagulls – “The Seagulls will fly around and use their claws to grab the Mountaineers supplies. They will fly back to their home and drop the heavy supplies on to the Mountaineers heads and knock them out and have time to score a bunch of touchdowns.”
Rory’s pick: Mountaineers – “Because they will go raaaaaa, and go baaaaaaa, and go blah, and go flop and go glop. Because they would go Ma, ma, mama, ma ma MA mama.”
Black Hills Wolves @ North Kitsap Vikings
North Kitsap HS, Poulsbo – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Vikings – “They will have their arrows ready and they would shoot them. Then the Wolves will die and they will score 200 touchdowns.”
Rory’s pick: Wolves – “Because the Wolves would go RARRRRR, and go bite bite and then eat them.”
Capital Cougars vs. Lincoln Abes
Ingersoll Stadium – 7:00 PM – Webcast: Eli Sports
Addie’s pick: Abes – “Abraham Lincoln will order all of the Cougars to be captured and be killed. The Cougars had been sneaking into houses and stealing food supplies.”
Rory’s pick: Cougars – “They will go choooomp and go roar roar roar roar and eat them.”
Olympia Bears @ South Kitsap Wolves
South Kitsap HS, Port Orchard – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Bears – “The Wolves would bite the Bears with their really sharp teeth then the whole pack would pull the sled and the player on the sled would score a bunch of touchdowns.”
Rory’s pick: Both, a tie – “They will wrestle. They will both win. It will be a tie. They will both bonk their head on the ground.”
Shelton Highclimbers vs. Foss Falcons
Highclimbers Stadium – 7:00 PM – Radio: 1030 AM and 92.9 FM KMAS
Addie’s pick: Falcons – “When the Highclimbers are trying to get them, the Falcons will swoop down and cut the bottom of the tree so that the Highclimbers would go, ‘Uh oh…..AHHHHHH…’ and fall down.”
Rory’s pick: Highclimbers – “They will climb up and whack them with their climbing axes.”
North Thurston Rams vs. Wilson Rams
South Sound Stadium – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: North Thurston – “The North Thurston ones would choose to hit in the middle of their heads and they would give the other team a big ouchy ouchy.”
Rory’s pick: Both – “They will both buck into each other and go bomp, bomp, bomp, bomp, bomp, bomp, bomp.”
Rochester Warriors @ Elma Eagles
Rottle Field, Montesano – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Eagles – “They will shoot them.”
Rory’s pick: Warriors – “They will go up and then go fly, fly and then cut them up.”
High School Football Power Rankings: T-Birds Still On Top but Tenino Closes the Gap
I predicted a pretty mediocre local high school football season, I have to admit. I figured Tumwater would be good (yeah, tough call) but wasn’t sold on Randy Swilley and Tenino and didn’t expect anything more than average from most of the other schools. But if the first two weeks are any indication, I could be very, happily wrong.
Tumwater stays #1 though Tenino is closing in after the T-Birds just barely pulled off a pair of victories. Meanwhile, Timberline is 1-1 but looks strong, River Ridge looks like the class of the 2A SPSL and Rainier is making waves as a 2B team.
——————————————–
1. Tumwater T-Birds (2-0)
Last week: #1 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Timberline, 35-33
Next game: vs. La Center – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Two weeks, two close calls for the T-Birds. Tumwater only won the game on Thursday night because Timberline killed themselves with penalties and once they compiled a few, didn’t get the benefit of the doubt from the officials on close calls. Like the play that sealed the win for Tumwater. A 4th down slant that was broken up on a hit that was either early or illegal and probably both but was not called.
2. Tenino Beavers (2-0)
Last week: #2 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Castle Rock, 39-19
Next game: vs. Hoquiam – Tenino Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Thomas Pier scored five touchdowns in virtually every way possible and the Beavers moved to 2-0 with two resounding victories. The single wing is working and Tenino is rolling. Still glad I don’t have to call any Tenino games, though. Next up: 1A Evergreen play when Hoquiam comes to town.
3. Timberline Blazers (1-1)
Last week: #3 (no change)
Previous game: Lost to Tumwater, 35-33
Next game: vs. Yelm – South Sound Stadium – Thursday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Timberline played well and nearly knocked off Tumwater. The difference was a missed PAT and a failed two-point conversion to make up for it in the second quarter. And multiple penalties at inopportune times that led t0 the officials calling everything close against the Blazers. Considering this is almost the same team that lost 44-0 to the T-Birds last year, you can see the strides that they have made and has to be one of the favorites now that 4A Narrows League play opens.
4. River Ridge Hawks (2-0)
Last week: #5 (+1)
Previous game: Beat North Thurston, 28-16
Next game: @ Franklin Pierce – Franklin Pierce HS, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: River Ridge knocked off North Thurston for the first time since 1998 and now look poised for a big season with the move to the 2A SPSL. The rest of the league is just 3-10 over the first two weeks and the Hawks open play against 0-2 Franklin Pierce on Friday.
5. Rainier Mountaineers (2-0 overall, 1-0 in 2B Pacific)
Last week: #6 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Kittitas, 33-0
Next game: vs. Raymond – Rainier HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Rainier defense has yet to give up a touchdown in wins over South Bend and Kittitas and are loving life as a 2B school. This week, they host what might be the game of the week in the South Sound when Raymond comes to town. The 2B Pacific comes down to Raymond, North Beach and the Mountaineers so this is one of the biggest games in a very, very long time for the Mountaineers.
6. Black Hills Wolves (2-0)
Last week: #7 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Rochester, 43-14
Next game: @ North Kitsap – North Kitsap HS, Poulsbo – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Chase Morrow threw for four more touchdowns and the junior quarterback who was slated to be the backup looks to be the real deal for the Wolves. However, they have played 1A Montesano and a team in Rochester that was 1A last year and is rebuilding after losing most of the top players to graduation. We’ll see where this Black Hills team is this week when they travel to Poulsbo to face a good North Kitsap team.
7. Capital Cougars (1-1)
Last week: #8 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Olympia, 17-7
Next game: vs. Lincoln – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Cougars defense has been outstanding giving up just 14 points to high powered Tumwater and just seven to Olympia. They made stop after stop in the second half of the Spaghetti Bowl to lead them to the big rivalry win. The offense, however, is one dimensional. Connor Kennedy had almost all of the yardage in the first half and the majority of it in the second half. It worked against Olympia but it will really have to work against Lincoln this weekend.
8. Yelm Tornadoes (2-0)
Last week: #10 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Foss, 26-24
Next game: @ Timberline – South Sound Stadium – Thursday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Tornadoes start fast, don’t they? With wins against better non-league opponents in Foss and Steilacoom compared to the last few years, there is a little bit of hope in Yelm. But that 4A Narrows League is tough and they will have to show something on Thursday night against Timberline to assuage my fears for their league season.
9. Olympia Bears (1-1)
Last week: #4 (-6)
Previous game: Lost to Capital, 17-7
Next game: @ South Kitsap – South Kitsap HS, Port Orchard – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Perhaps dropping the Bears this low isn’t fair. The Bears did drop a ranked team in the first week and were ranked #10 in the state. But they didn’t look good in the second half of the Spaghetti Bowl at all and now I’m doubting how good they actually are. A lot of questions will be answered when they open 4A Narrows play on Friday night in Port Orchard.
10. Shelton Highclimbers (1-1)
Last week: #11 (+1)
Previous game: Lost to Sumner, 51-14
Next game: vs. Foss – Highclimbers Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Yeah, the Highclimbers lost big, 51-14, but there were some things to take away from this game. Jake Henry played well again rushing for more than 160 yards and two touchdowns and a bunch of their top players including Brian Nault were sick all week. And yet, they battled well in the first half against a very good Sumner team. Next they host Foss in their 3A Narrows opener and with the Falcons not playing particularly well in the first two weeks, Shelton suddenly looks like a team that could pick up more than one regular season win – which is all that I predicted they would do this season.
11. North Thurston Rams (0-2)
Last week: #9 (-2)
Previous game: Lost to River Ridge, 28-16
Next game: vs. Wilson – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: For the first time in program history, the Rams lost to both Timberline and River Ridge. As a North Thurston alum, let me just say this: UGH!
12. Rochester Warriors (0-2)
Last week: #12 (No change)
Previous game: Lost to Black Hills, 43-14
Next game: @ Elma – Rottle Field, Montesano – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Rochester were eliminated from the playoffs in week one and then got throttled by Black Hills. Now, without anything to play for but fun and pride over the next seven weeks, the Warriors open league play against Elma.
High School Football Power Rankings: A Good Week Means Not Much Change
It was a very good week for the local schools. The only losses came to other in-area schools and Rochester’s loss to Centralia so there isn’t much of a shakeup in the Oly Sports power rankings this week. With more in-area games this week, there will definitely be some changes next week.
——————————————–
1. Tumwater T-Birds (1-0)
Last week: #1 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Capital, 14-3
Next game: @ Timberline – South Sound Stadium – Thursday, 7:00 PM
Notes: It took a half of football, but the second ranked team in 2A finally got the job done in the second half to knock off the Cougars 14-7. Junior Spencer Dowers struggled a bit in his first start at quarterback but Addison Barrett and Easton Trakel each scored for the T-Birds. Next up, Timberline on Thursday night, who they trounced last season 44-0.
2. Tenino Beavers (1-0)
Last week: #2 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Charles Wright, 50-8
Next game: @ Castle Rock – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Beavers hung 30 points on Charles Wright in the first quarter and never looked back in their 50-8 whomping of the Tarriers. Thomas Pier had runs of 94 and 95 yards and the single wing worked to perfection in Randy Swilley’s debut and the Beavers moved up to #4 in 1A in this week’s AP poll.
3. Timberline Blazers (1-0)
Last week: #3 (no change)
Previous game: Beat North Thurston, 34-21
Next game: vs. Tumwater – South Sound Stadium – Thursday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Gabe Gutierrez threw a touchdown and rushed for three more in a game that wasn’t as close as the score maybe indicates. Timberline took advantage of North Thurston turnovers to take home the win but now they draw a team in Tumwater that beat them up good last season, 44-0, and it will be interesting to see how the Blazers respond and will show a lot about where this team actually is this season.
4. Olympia Bears (1-0)
Last week: #4 (no change)
Previous game: Beat Ferris, 20-13
Next game: @ Capital – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Bears got a nice performance out of running back Collin Courter and the defense made a clutch stop to knock off the #9 team in last week’s AP poll. The win moved Olympia into the top ten of the poll and now they put that ranking up against their fierce rival, Capital.
5. River Ridge Hawks (1-0)
Last week: #6 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Aberdeen, 49-7
Next game: vs. North Thurston – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Wow River Ridge! We knew they had some speedy weapons but they absolutely rocked Aberdeen on both sides of the ball and suddenly look like a very dangerous team. And for the first time in a long time, you look at the Hawks schedule and you can’t see too many roadblocks. We’ll see if they can repeat that performance against North Thurston on Friday night.
6. Rainier Mountaineers (1-0 overall, 1-0 in 2B Pacific)
Last week: #7 (+1)
Previous game: Beat South Bend, 44-2
Next game: @ Kittitas – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Rainier’s first game in 2B couldn’t have gone better. It’s nice to get a team that was winless the season before to build some confidence and the Mountaineers did just that. Nic Henry ran for 250 yards and three touchdowns. Next they travel to Central Washington for non-league game against Kittitas.
7. Black Hills Wolves (1-0)
Last week: #9 (+2)
Previous game: Beat Montesano, 33-7
Next game: vs. Rochester – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: The Wolves spoiled the opening of Montesano’s rebuilt Rottle Field thanks to a backup quarterback. Chase Morrow threw for over 350 yards and four touchdowns against the 1A – albeit a historically good 1A school – Bulldogs. They next face a Rochester team that is staffed by many former Wolves assistants.
8. Capital Cougars (0-1)
Last week: #5 (-3)
Previous game: Lost to Tumwater, 14-3
Next game: vs. Olympia – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: As I said last week, Capital could be a pretty good team. But this schedule that they play is nearly impossible. They played a very good defensive game against Tumwater in week one and took a 3-0 lead into the half. But not being able to get into the endzone when they were holding the T-Birds down was their demise and now they take an 0-1 record into a game with their rival, the #9 ranked 4A team Olympia.
9. North Thurston Rams (0-1)
Last week: #8 (-1)
Previous game: Lost to Timberline, 34-21
Next game: @ River Ridge – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: It looks like it might be a rough season for the Rams. The only reason I didn’t drop them further below winners like Yelm and Shelton is that they lost to a pretty good team in Timberline while the Tornadoes and Highclimbers beat weaker competition. The Rams next get a River Ridge team that looks poised to have a big season and the speed of the Hawks will likely be a major problem for the Rams.
10. Yelm Tornadoes (1-0)
Last week: #11 (+1)
Previous game: Beat Steilacoom, 22-12
Next game: @ Foss – Mount Tahoma Stadium, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Yelm made the necessary adjustments to knock off Steilacoom but it was hardly convincing. Devante Pearson started at quarterback but moved to running back and scored a pair of touchdowns.
11. Shelton Highclimbers (1-0)
Last week: #12 (+1)
Previous game: Beat North Mason, 28-21
Next game: @ Sumner – Sunset Chevy Stadium, Sumner – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Confidence. Last year the Highclimbers opened against Tumwater and were completely stymied in a big loss. That loss, though expected, set the tone for the rest of the season. The coach, the players, nobody seemed to have any confidence to do anything other than run Jake Henry straight up the middle. This year, you can tell that the team has more confidence. They have matured and against North Mason they opened the playbook, played more players and reaped the benefits against a Bulldogs team that didn’t take proper advantage of their best weapon, Daniel Burggraaf. But now they get Sumner, a team that went 11-1 last year and easily beat Franklin Pierce in their opener.
12. Rochester Warriors (0-1)
Last week: #10 (-2)
Previous game: Lost to Centralia, 47-7
Next game: @ Black Hills – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Rochester, with a big loss, is already out of the playoffs. That is the sad by-product of running away from the 2A EvCo and joining Aberdeen – who also lost to a 2A school and is eliminated – in the hybrid 2A/1A. Basically, they had to beat all of their 2A opponents to get in and they didn’t and now they are done. Perhaps that will allow them to play with a certain abandon from here on out.
Friday Football Scores: An Outstanding Night for Local Teams
The 12 local high schools teams won 9 games tonight. The only blemishes were in the two games that featured two local teams and Centralia’s dismantling of Rochester. Other than that, a clean, convincing sweep.

Capital Cougars @ Tumwater T-Birds

Rory’s pick: T-Birds – “They would chirp at the other birds.”
North Thurston Rams vs. Timberline Blazers
South Sound Stadium – 7:00 PM – Webcast: ESN
Addie’s pick: Rams – “When the Blazers are trying to cut down a tree, one Ram will come and use his horns and pick him up and another Ram will come and knock down the tree with his horns.
Rory’s pick: Blazers – “Because….actually I’ll take the other birds. No, the Rams will eat the Blazers. Hmmmm….maybe I’ll pick the other birds.”
Olympia Bears vs. Ferris Saxons
Ingersoll Stadium – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Saxons – “The Saxons will play their saxophones and put the Bears to sleep.”
Rory’s pick: Bears – “The Bears will jump out and get them.”
Rainier Mountaineers @ South Bend Indians
South Bend HS – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Indians – “When the Mountaineers throw snowballs and ice things at them, the Indians will use their Indian swords, guns and shields to knock down the ice and cut their snowballs and then they go forward and say ‘oops we just knocked down your ice with our shields and swords'”
Rory’s pick: Mountaineers – “Because they will go chop chop chop chop chop chop and then go eat them! And then they’ll go TOUCAN! TOUCAN! TOUCAN! and scare them away.
River Ridge Hawks @ Aberdeen Bobcats
Stewart Field, Aberdeen – 7:00 PM
Addie’s pick: Bobcats – “Because the lady Bobcats will stand behind on rocks and the men will stand on the ground and the men will pounce on the Hawks and the girls will jump down on top of them and they will scrape them.”
Rory’s pick: Bobcats – “Because they will eat them!”
Rochester Warriors @ Centralia Tigers

Rory’s pick: Tigers – “Because they will jump down and eat them!”
Shelton Highclimbers vs. North Mason Bulldogs

High School Football Preseason Power Rankings: T-Birds On Top
Here we go. Just a day away from the first high school football games of the season. And it is a season of changes and uncertainty for the 12 local high school football teams. Tumwater is the clear #1 team but after that it is almost a toss up. Tenino, Timberline, Olympia, Capital, even River Ridge, Rochester or Rainier could claim a high spot in these rankings.
——————————————–
1. Tumwater T-Birds
Last season: 13-1 – 2A EvCo champions, lost to Lynden in the 2A state title game
Next game: vs. Capital – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: Two straight 2A state title games and the T-Birds don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. The Sid Otton coached team returns most of the top players including all-state linebacker Trevor Davis, wing back Easton Trakel and running back Tyrus Snow. There is no reason to think that they won’t be back in the title game again. The only major question is quarterback Spencer Dowers and how he replaces Jayden Croft. Croft’s first start running the complicated Tumwater offense as a junior didn’t go as planned with a surprising loss to Shelton. Dowers faces Capital in his first start.
2. Tenino Beavers
Last season: 6-5 – 1A Evergreen champions
Next game: at Charles Wright – University Place – 7:00 PM
Outlook: Tenino has a new head coach, former Yelm coach Randy Swilley, and returns a talented group of players that won the Beavers’ first league title in 27 years. Quarterback Calvin Guzman and running back Thomas Pier will have to adapt to Swilley’s single wing offense – an old school, rugby-ish offense that will either delight Tenino fans or make them pull their hair out. They will also have to adapt to the new hybrid 2A/1A Evergreen Conference. The league lost the tiny Rainier Mountaineers and gained Eatonville and 2A Aberdeen while Rochester stayed put in the league but moved up to 2A.
3. Timberline Blazers
Last season: 6-4 – 3A Narrows League champions
Next game: @ North Thurston – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: The Blazers move up from the 3A Narrows to the 4A Narrows and return a solid group of skill players in senior quarterback Gabe Gutierrez, running back Andrew Paquin, speedy returner and defensive back Stevie Cleveland and a lot more from a team that won the league title but couldn’t get past Meadowdale in the crossover game. It’s hard to say how they will compete with the Bellarmines and Gig Harbors of the 4A Narrows, but they should find themselves competing with Olympia for a playoff spot.
4. Olympia Bears
Last season: 7-3 – 4th in 4A Narrows
Next game: vs. Ferris – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: Olympia was easily the best team in the area that did not go to the playoffs in 2013 but the 4A Narrows was a little wild and wooly and the Bears just narrowly missed out. On the offense, gone is quarterback Derrick Becker and do everything Mitch Fettig to college careers which means that Kaden Wilson takes over under center after losing the job as a junior to the transfer Becker. Injuries have hurt the Bears already with Chase Zarate out for the season and it doesn’t help that the Bears and Aberdeen’s prize recruit Joel Dublanko flirted with each other in the spring and over the offseason before his family decided to stay put in the Harbor.
5. Capital Cougars
Last season: 4-6 – 3rd in 2A EvCo
Next game: @ Tumwater – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: I flirted with the idea of putting the Cougars as high as #2 in the power rankings this week because they return a really good core including both 1,000 yard runners in Connor Kennedy and Ryan Rieta and a solid offensive line that will help to spring them. However, you look at their schedule and it is impressively difficult. Tumwater to open the season, Olympia in week 2, Lincoln in week 3 and until they get to Week 7 against Mount Tahoma and week 9 against Shelton, there isn’t much of a competitive break for the Cougars. They opened the season with three straight losses in 2013 and could easily be 0-3 once again. But they could also be 2-1 or even 3-0. We’ll see.
6. River Ridge Hawks
Last season: 4-5 – 5th in 2A EvCo
Next game: @ Aberdeen – Stewart Field, Aberdeen – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: New offense, new league, new hope for River Ridge. The Hawks smartly ran away from the disintegrating 2A EvCo and found a new home in the SPSL. Sumner moved up to 3A so the league is much more balanced than it was a year ago when they ran the table. The speedy hawks will surely compete with the likes of the White River, Franklin Pierce and Steilacoom and could easily find themselves on top of the table when it is all said and done.
7. Rainier Mountaineers
Last season: 3-7 – 7th in 1A Evergreen
Next game: @ South Bend – South Bend HS – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: There was no bigger winner competitively in the reclassification shuffle than Rainier. They went from one of the smallest 1A schools to one of the biggest 2B schools and will have a very serious opportunity to contend with Raymond or North Beach in the 2B Pacific League. McKoy Bichler returns to Terry Shaw’s offense and could be the class quarterback of the league.
8. North Thurston Rams
Last season: 5-5 – 5th in 3A Narrows
Next game: vs. Timberline – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: The Rams return just seven starters total from their 5-5 team last season including defensive lineman Grant Williams and defensive back Malachai Hicks. But the offense lost quarterback Ryan Mets and their hard nose running backs and the Rams look to be rebuilding in a highly competitive 3A Narrows League.
9. Black Hills Wolves
Last season: 4-6 – 4th in 2A EvCo
Next game: @ Montesano – Rottle Field, Montesano – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: The ugly ousting of Dominic Yarrington is behind the Wolves and Kirk Stevens takes over the reins of a team that might not be too bad but have an unfortunate league situation in the current four team 2A EvCo. With Tumwater, WF West and an improved Centralia squad, it seems like the Wolves might be the odd team out. The spread offense with quarterback Jayden Troy and a trio of good receivers could surprise, though.
10. Rochester Warriors
Last season: 6-4 – 2nd in 1A Evergreen
Next game: @ Centralia – Tiger Stadium, Centralia – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: If Rainier was the big winner in the reclassification cycle, Rochester has to be considered the big loser. The Warriors suddenly found themselves as one of the smallest 2A schools and were faced with the possibility of joining Tumwater, WF West, Black Hills and Centralia in the 2A EvCo. But, in my opinion, the Warriors did the smart thing and, along with fellow 2A squad Aberdeen, entered the hybrid 2A/1A Evergreen. They keep their traditional rivals, play schools that are much more in line with their size and resources and it should make it better competitively for all sports. However, that means the road to the playoffs is much more difficult since neither they or Aberdeen have a guaranteed spot in the 2A postseason. The schedule also doesn’t pay them any favors. Somehow the Warriors only play three home games this year.
11. Yelm Tornadoes
Last season: 4-6 – 6th in 4A Narrows
Next game: vs. Steilacoom – Yelm Tornadoes Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: Yelm has a good sophomore running back in Brandon Montgomery and a good offensive line to help spring him but they play a tougher non-conference schedule this season and have to face the always strong 4A Narrows League. It could be a long season for Jason Ronquillo’s squad.
12. Shelton Highclimbers
Last season: 2-8 – 6th in 3A Narrows
Next game: vs. North Mason – Highclimbers Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM
Outlook: The Highclimbers are coming off a year that was only salvaged because they won games against two of the worst teams in the entire state, Mount Tahoma and Stadium. This year, Shelton will be better than last year and they still have workhorse Jake Henry at running back and putting Brian Nault at fullback will take advantage of his skills. But looking at the rough schedule that includes a non-conference game at Sumner, you can’t help but think that a 1-8 regular season is on the way.
2014 High School Football Schedules By Team
Football season is just around the corner with practices kicking off next week. It’s a season of change: new classifications, new leagues, new teams coming to town, increased travel and a lot of questions as to how this season will play out in the South Sound.
So with that in mind, here are the 2014 area football schedules listed by each team. Please let me know if I messed anything up, it’s entirely possible I missed something.
