Today (5/31): Capital Criterium; Cougars Play For State Title; Much More

Capital Stage Race – Downtown Olympia and Capitol Campus – All-Day

The Capital Stage Race is already underway as I type this. It begins with a time trial down the Deschutes Parkway and continues later today at the Capitol Campus with the Capitol Criterium beginning at 2:30. The pro men’s cyclists will run a 60 minute race around the campus at 6:00 and the pro women will race for 40 minutes at 8:00. For more information, click here.

Capital hasn’t allowed a goal in five straight postseason matches now but will be thoroughly tested in the state title game against Squalicum, who raced past Toppenish with five goals in the semifinals. The Storm are unbeaten this season at 20-0-2 and have allowed just five goals total. They have outscored their opponents in the postseason 26-0. The Cougars lost just two games but have struggled to score goals in the state tournament winning two 1-0 games and taking another scoreless game to a shootout.

3A State Tournament Regionals
North Thurston vs. O’Dea – Bannerwood Park, Bellevue – 1:00 PM
Timberline vs. Bainbridge – Wheeler Field, Centralia – 1:00 PM

The Rams, the 3A Narrows League regular season champs, survived three loser-out games in the District 3/4 tourney and draws an extremely tough match-up in O’Dea, the Metro League champion with a 21-2 overall record. The winner will face either Columbia River or Mountlake Terrace on Saturday afternoon.

Timberline knocked off North Thurston in the Narrows League championship game and won three straight games in districts to take the #1 seed to state. The 23-2 Blazers will face Bainbridge at 1:00 in Centralia with the winner moving on to face either Mt. Si or Shorewood at 4:00.

2A State Tournament Regionals
Tumwater vs. White River – WF West HS – 10:00 AM

The T-Birds (20-4 overall) took third in the District 4 tournament after a loss to WF West and an elimination game win over Capital. They face the #2 seed out of District 3, White River (19-5 overall) in the morning game in Chehalis. The winner will face Klahowya or Centralia in the next round at 4:00.


High school softball

4A District 3/4 Tournament
Olympia vs. Thomas Jefferson – Kent Service Ballfields – 1:00 PM

The Bears open district play against a Thomas Jefferson team that is 11-10 overall and has lost three straight games. The winner will face either Battle Ground or Puyallup in the quarterfinals at 5:00 PM while the loser faces the loser of that game in a loser-out game also at 5:00.


3A District 3/4 Tournament

North Thurston vs. Peninsula – Sprinker Recreation Center, Spanaway – Noon
Timberline vs. Mountain View/Auburn Mountainview – Sprinker, Spanaway – 4:00 PM

The Rams face a 9-10 Peninsula team at noon. The winner faces Enumclaw in the next round while the loser will face either Timberline, Mountain View or Auburn Mountainview in a loser-out game at 6:00 PM

The Blazers get a first round bye and will face the winner of Mountain View/Auburn Mountainview. If they win, they qualify for state and will next play on Saturday. If they lose, they fall into a loser-out game against either North Thurston or Peninsula at 6:00.


Roller derby

JBLM Bettie Brigade May-Hem Doubleheader – Bettie Bunker, Lacey – 6:00 PM

The JBLM Bettie Brigade hosts a pair of interleague bouts followed by a concert featuring Mach Society, Mosquito Hawk and Buffalo Skies to raise money for improvements to their Lacey home, the Bettie Bunker. Tickets are $12 at the door. For more information, click here.

Today (8/17): Geoducks soccer kicks off, volleyball welcomes alumni

geoducksThe college sports season is upon us and the Evergreen men’s soccer team gets things going today with a 1:00 PM game against Trinity Lutheran at Evergreen Pitch. The Geoducks return two solid senior goalkeepers in Mauricio Sanchez and Colin Harlow, the CCC defensive player of the year Brady Espinoza and the CCC newcomer of the year Willie Spurr and are picked to finish second in the Cascade Conference after making an appearance in the conference championship game last season.

At 5:00 PM, head indoors to the CRC Gymnasium for a new era in Evergreen volleyball when the current squad, headed by new head coach Angela Spoja, takes on the Geoducks alumni in a scrimmage.

august_17th_18th_website_2For you gearheads, South Sound Speedway features street stocks, mini stocks, stinger 8’s, bumblebees and WMRAs tonight. Qualifying starts at 5:00 PM and racing gets underway at 6:30 PM.

Today (8/3): Miller 200 at the Speedway

Miller 200
Tonight is one of South Sound Speedway’s biggest events, the Miller 200. The fastest 3/8ths mile on the West Coast will be at its fastest tonight with over 25 super stock cars lining up for the chance at a $3,000 grand prize. Add to that mini stocks and bumblebees and you got yourself a nice little speedway date. Adult tickets are $22, teens/military/seniors are $20, kids 6-12 are $7 and children 5 and under are free. Racing begins at 6:30 PM.

Today (7/27): Senior games, Special Olympics softball, Oly Traverse, PSCL, Racing

It’s an extremely busy day of sports in the South Sound highlighted by the Washington State Senior games and the Olympia Traverse. Let’s get right to it…

The Washington State Senior Games draws up to 1,700 participants to the Olympia way and today features the opening ceremonies at Tumwater Stadium at 8:00 AM followed by Track & Field events starting at 9:00 AM and running into the afternoon. Also on the Tumwater High School campus is the 3-on-3 basketball tournament and other basketball events in the gymnasium. Tomorrow also features pickleball, raquetball and bowling at various sites around town. Check the complete schedule here.

The Special Olympics Southwest Region Softball Tournament comes to LBA Park and Stevens Field beginning at 9:00 AM and continuing throughout the day. Volunteers might still be needed so if you would like to help out, head over to LBA bright and early to find out what you can do. Or go root on the handful of Olympia teams that are taking part in the festivities. For more info, click here.

How does a 7.4 mile mountain bike ride, a 22 mile road bike ride, a 3.5 mile paddle, a 4.5 mile run and a final half mile trek to Port Plaza sound to you? Well then the Olympia Traverse is just for you. The festivities get underway at noon at the Mima Falls Trailhead with bikes traveling through the Capitol Forest and The Evergreen State College and to West Bay Park. From there they paddle to Swantown Boatworks, run to Priest Point Park and back and eventually head to Port Plaza with their team to wrap it all up. The last day of the Puget Sound Collegiate League’s regular season is upon us and a triple header at The RAC finishes it all off. The Olympia Athletics face the West Olympia Linx at 1:00 PM, the Tumwater Brewers face the Nisqually Silvers at 4:00 PM and the Hawks Prairie Cardinals and Lacey Saints wrap it up at 7:00 PM. The PSCL tournament starts on Sunday and runs until Wednesday night.

And if all of that wasn’t enough, the gear heads will love racing in both Rainier and Rochester. Motorcycle and quad racing kicks off at the Rainier Flat Track beginning at 4:30 PM. For more info, click here.

And finally, South Sound Speedway features street stocks, legends, outlaw compacts, baby grands and stinger 8s. Qualifying begins at 5:00 PM and racing gets underway at 6:30. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for military, seniors and teenagers and $5 for ages 6-12.

Big day of sports in the South Sound today with the Capital Lakefair Volleyball Tournament taking place on the Capitol Campus all day and the Kick In the Grass Soccer Tournament at various sites in Tumwater and two spectator sports take place in town tonight that are worth your time…

17 amateur MMA and kickboxing fights are scheduled for tonight’s Northwest Fight Challenge XVII at the South Sound Sports Center in Tumwater. Tickets for the event are $25 for general admission and $50 for VIP ringside and are available at the door. Doors open at 6:00 PM with fights getting underway at 7:00 PM.

With the cancellation of the Kamloops Tournament originally scheduled for this weekend, the Seattle Studs, Thurston County Senators and other Northwest teams scrambled to put together a tournament for this weekend and the Puget Sound Invitational was born. The Studs, Senators, Northwest Honkers and Everett Merchants play the second day of the tourney today at Saint Martin’s with four games including two Senators tilts. The tourney will wrap up tomorrow at Curtis High School in University Place.
