Angela Gelhar scored a career high 27 points including the go ahead three pointer with 54 seconds left to lead Saint Martin’s to a 61-56 win over 18th-ranked Northwest Nazarene. It is the Saints first win over a ranked opponent since they beat #11 Alaska-Anchorage in 2011 and snapped an 11 game losing streak to the Crusaders.
Saint Martin’s forced 24 Northwest Nazarene turnovers and held the Crusaders to just 30.9% shooting. Megan Hingston scored 20 points, right at her average this season, but went just 7-for-21 from the floor. The trio of Chelsie Luke, Taylor Simmons and Kayla Schumannn were held to just 19 points combined, 16.9 points below their average, as the Crusaders, who average 80 points per game, were held to their lowest point total of the season by 12 points.
Gelhar scored 10 of the Saints last 12 points including two of her three three pointers. She went 12-of-12 from the free throw line on a night where Saint Martin’s missed just three shots from the charity stripe, going 25-for-28. Chelsea Haskey was limited by foul trouble but still managed to score 13 points and Mackenzie Taylor added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Tumwater vs. Lynden – Tacoma Dome – 10:00 AM
Radio: KGY, Eli Sports, KPUG ScoreCzar prediction: Lynden 24, Tumwater 21
The big day for Tumwater is here. Can they finish off this undefeated season and avenge last year’s state title loss these same Lynden Lions? Well, not quite the same. Still good, without question, but the Lions have a much different team and were not quite as dominant as last season despite their undefeated record. It should be a great game, don’t miss it.

Kyle Calhoun made six three pointers and finished with 22 points but was the only Geoduck to make more than two field goals in their 73-54 loss to Eastern Oregon at the CRC Gymnasium.
The Geoducks made just 15 shots from the field, eight of those were from long distance, and they were outrebounded 47-32. Marc Taylor scored nine points and pulled down seven boards in the loss.
The Evergreen women come into the Cascade Conference opener tonight riding a four game winning streak, all over NCAA Division III teams. The Geoducks were picked to finish ninth in the CCC and will have a stiff test when they host CCC preseason favorite Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers are 7-3, though three of those wins came in romps over independent Walla Walla.
The Evergreen won their first game of the season against UBC-Okanogan but haven’t picked up a win since and are 1-4 in counting games this season. They have also lost four exhibition games including three games against NCAA Division I opponents. Their last time out nearly two weeks ago, they gave the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers a good game before falling 79-75.
Eastern Oregon is 8-1 in the early going but have won six of their games against New Hope Christian, Multnomah University and Walla Walla, all independent or NCCCAA schools. The Mountaineers were picked to finish 5th in the CCC.

SMU leader: Chelsea Haskey – 21 points, 10 boards
After shooting just 26% in the first half, the Saints came out of the locker room red hot and went on a 17-3 run over the first six minutes of the second half and never looked back, knocking off Central Wasington in the GNAC opener, 64-49, at Marcus Pavilion.
Chelsea Haskey scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Angela Gelhar added 12 points but it was Krista Stabler’s two straight three point plays that sparked the Saints run early in the second half.
Stabler drove down the right side of the lane on two straight possessions and hit the shot after being hammered by Central’s India Matheson and Melanie Valdez. The sophomore hit both and-one free throws and the Saints built a lead that would never shrink below 12 points the rest of the way.
The Saints scored 24 points off of 25 turnovers and held the GNAC’s leading scorer, Jessica VanDyke, to 16 points, five points off of her average over the first six games. VanDyke committed two fouls in the first four minutes and sat for a long spell in the first half. She played just 23 minutes and was on the Wildcats bench for the final five minutes of the game.
The Saints move to 1-0 in the GNAC and 4-3 overall while Central falls to 0-1 in conference and 3-3 overall.
Saint Martin’s went 11-for-21 (52.4%) from three point range and out-rebounded Simon Fraser 36-24 to capture the first win for head coach Michael Ostlund, a 78-64 win in the GNAC opener in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Ryan Rogers scored 12 points in the first half and Evan Coulter scored 12 in the second and finished with 21 and 17 points respectively. Rogers pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Saints and Matt Dodson plucked seven boards. Will Bond added 13 points.

Marcus Pavilion – 7:00 PM Live stats and video
The Saint Martin’s women open up GNAC play tonight when they host Central Washington at 7:00 PM. The Saints are a head scratcher of a team right now. But a week later, the Saints dropped a 78-76 decision to those same Eagles in Bellingham and then followed that up with a 17 point loss to PLU on the next day. They sit at 3-3 overall.
Central Washington is 3-2 this season and is led by Jessica VanDyke, who is having a breakout beginning to her senior season scoring 21.4 points per game with 7.2 rebounds. Olympia’s Lauren Herseth is on the Wildcats roster but has not joined the basketball team yet. She is also a Central volleyball player and will play for the Wildcats in the NCAA regionals.
