The big day for Tumwater is here. Can they finish off this undefeated season and avenge last year’s state title loss these same Lynden Lions? Well, not quite the same. Still good, without question, but the Lions have a much different team and were not quite as dominant as last season despite their undefeated record. It should be a great game, don’t miss it.

Women’s basketball

Saint Martin’s 64, Central Washington 49 – Box score
Team 1st 2nd Final
Central Washington (0-1 GNAC, 3-3 overall) 19 30 49
Saint Martin’s (1-0 GNAC, 4-3 overall) 26 38 64
SMU leader: Chelsea Haskey – 21 points, 10 boards

After shooting just 26% in the first half, the Saints came out of the locker room red hot and went on a 17-3 run over the first six minutes of the second half and never looked back, knocking off Central Wasington in the GNAC opener, 64-49, at Marcus Pavilion.

Chelsea Haskey scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Angela Gelhar added 12 points but it was Krista Stabler’s two straight three point plays that sparked the Saints run early in the second half.

Stabler drove down the right side of the lane on two straight possessions and hit the shot after being hammered by Central’s India Matheson and Melanie Valdez. The sophomore hit both and-one free throws and the Saints built a lead that would never shrink below 12 points the rest of the way.

The Saints scored 24 points off of 25 turnovers and held the GNAC’s leading scorer, Jessica VanDyke, to 16 points, five points off of her average over the first six games. VanDyke committed two fouls in the first four minutes and sat for a long spell in the first half. She played just 23 minutes and was on the Wildcats bench for the final five minutes of the game.

The Saints move to 1-0 in the GNAC and 4-3 overall while Central falls to 0-1 in conference and 3-3 overall.

The Saint Martin’s women open up GNAC play tonight when they host Central Washington at 7:00 PM. The Saints are a head scratcher of a team right now. But a week later, the Saints dropped a 78-76 decision to those same Eagles in Bellingham and then followed that up with a 17 point loss to PLU on the next day. They sit at 3-3 overall.

Central Washington is 3-2 this season and is led by Jessica VanDyke, who is having a breakout beginning to her senior season scoring 21.4 points per game with 7.2 rebounds. Olympia’s Lauren Herseth is on the Wildcats roster but has not joined the basketball team yet. She is also a Central volleyball player and will play for the Wildcats in the NCAA regionals.

Northwest 78, Saint Martin’s 76 – Recap

Well, this is a head scratcher. Less than a week after knocking off Northwest University by 38 points at Marcus Pavilion in a game that was never even remotely competitive, Saint Martin’s were stunned by the Eagles, 78-76, in the Lynda Goodrich Classic at Carver Gym in Bellingham.

Northwest opened up a 13-2 lead at the 15:20 mark of the first half and trailed by as many as 15 in the first half before Jordyn Richardson hit a 35-foot three pointer at the buzzer to get the Saints back within nine at the break.

The Saints rallied back in the second half and took a seven point lead on a Brooke Paulson layup with 6:05 remaining. But the Eagles answered back with a 9-2 run giving them a 67-66 lead at the 4:32 mark. Two lead changes and a tie later, Angela Gelhar hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 76-76. But Jordan Asher scored the go ahead bucket with 7.2 seconds remaining and Gelhar missed on a last second shot and Northwest held on to the shocking 78-76 victory.

Chelsea Haskey scored 20 points and Paulson added 17 for the Saints, who fell to 3-2 on the season and snapped a three game winning streak.

Sanda Milovic scored 23 for Northest.

Sunday Scoreboard: Geoducks Nearly Shucked on the Keel

Cal Maritime 79, Evergreen 75 – Recap

In a game that was as entertaining as their nicknames, Frankie Johnson’s three with 1:44 left to play gave the Evergreen Geoducks a 75-74 lead over the NAIA Division II 22nd-ranked Cal Maritime Keelhaulers. But Jaquai Wiley’s layup with 50 seconds left gave the Keelhaulers to lead for good and the Geoducks fell 79-75 at the CRC Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.

Johnson led the way for Evergreen with 16 points and five assists. Kyle Calhoun and Cody Peters chipped in 13 and 12 points respectively. Casey Healy led Cal Maritime with 26 points and eight rebounds and Erik Hanson added 15 points including two free throws that iced the game after KJ Hong missed what would have been the go ahead three pointer with three second left for the Geoducks.

Evergreen falls to 1-4 this season while Cal Maritime improves to 7-1.
