Note: I cannot find or piece together the 1B Columbia Valley girls standings and the 1B Columbia Valley boys standings are semi-updated.

Halfway through the GNAC season and Saint Martin’s is once again on the outside looking in at the conference tournament to be played on their home court. But Michael Ostlund’s team has been competitive in every league game except the Montana State-Billings and Alaska losses. The MSU-Billings game was a home game that they desperately needed to win and the Alaska game was in front of the largest crowd of the season and on ROOT Sports, a game that going in seemed very winnable despite the Nanooks surprising second place status.
The offense is still a bit of a head scratcher and I can’t imagine that playing four guards at a time will mean sustained success, but the Saints live by the three and die by the three, so anything can happen, as was the case when they upset then #11 Seattle Pacific.
They will need to have a healthy Riley Carel and Lucas Shannon to make any kind of run. Carel missed Thursday’s game with a torn meniscus and it was thought he could miss the rest of the season. But he came back on Saturday and looked pretty good. Shannon suffered a concussion on Thursday and didn’t play Saturday and because of Rei Jensen wasn’t effective (hard to be when you don’t get to play much anymore), the Saints played five guards with 6-4 Brad Norman filling the post position.
The Saints play five of their last nine games at Marcus Pavilion but hit the road this weekend with games at Seattle Pacific and Montana State-Billings and the annual Alaska trip is still looming.

A hot, hot start for Saint Martin’s has cooled off dramatically with three straight losses and a drop from alone in first place to teetering on the edge of missing the conference tourney again.
Before the season, the biggest question for the Saints was who would step up as a second scorer behind Chelsea Haskey. Angela Gelhar or Krista Stabler have become solid scorers, but during their slide, Haskey has been a non-factor scoring 2, 6, 9 and 15 in her last four games. Though her 15 points on Saturday were her most since January 4th, Haskey only scored six points in the second half when Seattle Pacific blitzed the Saints to take home the win.
The Saints play four of their last nine games at home and thankfully have just one game this week, at Western Oregon on Saturday night.

Evergreen has improved in conference play in each of the last two seasons after bottoming out without a win during the 2011-2012 season. Of course improvement means one conference win last year and now two conference wins this year with seven very difficult games still left on the docket.
Dre Taylor and Jordan Dam each played their first game of the season on December 20th and have made a huge difference for the Geoducks. They went from dropping all but two games by double-digits to two wins and close, competitive losses since the new year and find themselves just a game back of the conference tournament.
However, four of the final seven games are on the road and their three home games are against top-5 teams.

The Evergreen women have done two things this season that have never been done in program history: sweep Concordia and Warner Pacific in Portland and win four straight conference games. The Geoducks are riding that four game streak right now and sit in a pack of six teams fighting for second place at either 7-4 or 6-5 in league play.
Sammi Clark is a consistent, fierce guard that is averaging 14.6 points per game and Brittany Gray has established herself as a solid presence in the front court. Jessica Denmon has two straight double-doubles from the guard position and they have had two bench players explode during their last four games. Uriah Thomas went for 22 points against Warner Pacific and LaNiecia Weatherspoon led the way with 15 points against Corban.

Defections and injuries have plagued South Puget Sound this season and the Clippers are down from 12 healthy players at the beginning of the season to dressing seven players, playing six and running five of them for 38+ minutes per game. No surprise they have managed only one win.
Early starters Joseph Johnson and Oly’s Michael Champlin and new head coach Aaron Landon’s first signed player, Chris Williams, have all left the program. Austin Bonds went down with a broken hand and is out for the season.
Brian Tyson and Slanblaytee Kaye lead the Clippers in scoring at 14.9 and 14.5 points per game respectively and Kaye dropped a triple-double on Grays Harbor with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists.SPSCC has eight games remaining, four at home and four on the road, and face Lower Columbia – the only team they have beaten this season – in Olympia on Wednesday.

Though they have managed just three wins this season, the SPSCC women have improved dramatically since last season. During the 2012-2013 season, they shot just 26% and scored an average of 36.9 points per game, dead last in the NWAACC.
This season the Clippers are shooting 37% and are averaging 58.7 points per game thanks to the emergence of sophomores Maria Jesse (14.1 ppg) and LaKeisha Anger (13.0 ppg, 9.43 rpg) and some semblance of a full, consistent roster.

Dre Taylor scored 33 points and Jordan Dam added 21 as Evergreen led the entire way in their 81-66 win over Corban at the CRC Gymnasium. Taylor and Dam combined to go 10-of-14 from 3-point range and the Geoducks made 12 3-pointers in the win. Marc Taylor chipped in 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Evergreen moved to 2-9 in the Cascade Conference and 3-15 overall, their most wins since the 2010-2011 season. They went 1-26 overall and 0-18 in conference in 2011-2012 and 2-24 overall and 1-17 in conference in the 2012-2013 season.

Saint Martin’s and Alaska Anchorage combined for 13 lead changes and nine ties and Brian McGill’s layup with 58 second left was the last lead change and gave the Seawolves a 79-78 win at Marcus Pavilion. Teancum Stafford missed a pair of free throws for Alaska Anchorage with 4.8 seconds left and Riley Carel launched a half court runner that drew iron but would not fall.
Five Saints scored in double-digits and Evan Coulter led the way with 17 points. Isaac Bianchini hit five three pointers and finished with 15 points, Ryan Rogers notched 13 points and Carel and Matt Dodson each added 12. Dodson also pulled down 12 rebounds for the double-double and Coulter dished out six assists.
Travis Thompson missed just four shots all night going 7-for-11 from the field including four 3-pointers and 9-of-9 from the free throw line to finish with 27 points. Kyle Fossman added 17 points and Brian McGill scored the last six points for the Seawolves and finished with 13 points.
Before the evening started, six teams were within a game of each other at either 4-4 or 3-5. The Seawolves improved to 5-4 while the Saints dropped behind the pack at 3-6.

Evergreen managed just 17 points in the first half but exploded in the second half and matched Corban’s entire game output with 48 points and won their fourth straight Cascade Confernce game, 65-48. The four game streak is the best conference run in the history of the program.
LaNiecia Weatherspoon came off the bench and scored 12 points in the second half and finished with 15 to lead the way for Evergreen. Sammi Clark added 14 points and Jessica Denmon notched her second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Brittany Gray rounded out the double digit scoring with 11.
The Geoducks are now 6-5 in the CCC and are tied with Corban and Southern Oregon a game back of a three team, 7-4 second team pack.

After Saint Martin’s opened up 28-14 lead at the 8:22 mark of the first half, Seattle Pacific outscored the Saints 52-20 over a 26 minute stretch to open up an 18 point lead, 66-48, with 6:08 left to play en route to a 78-68 win at Brougham Pavilion in Seattle.
Krista Stabler scored a career high 21 points and Chelsea Haskey added 15 points with seven rebounds.
The Saints have now lost three straight games and fell to 5-4 in the GNAC, two games behind the league leaders Montana State-Billings and Western Washington.

The Evergreen women come into tonight’s CCC battle riding a three game winning streak including their first ever sweep of the Portland schools in PDX and now sit at 5-5 in conference play and are one game behind sixth place Corban (6-4), who comes to town tonight. The two teams met on December 20th in Salem with the Warriors taking a 66-63 decision.

Saint Martin’s is battling injuries and likely will be without starting point guard Riley Carel (torn meniscus) and forward Lucas Shannon (concussion) when they take on Alaska-Anchorage tonight. The Saints are 3-5 in the GNAC and are still battling for a playoff spot as six teams are within a game of each other. The Seawolves are one of those teams. They sit just a game ahead of the Saints at 4-4 in conference play and are coming off a 92-58 thumping of Western Oregon in Monmouth on Thursday night.
The Evergreen men are still looking for their second conference win but have played very well over the last couple weeks and have been extremely close in many games. And tonight they have a very good opportunity to pick up that second win against a struggling Corban team that is just ahead of them in the CCC standings at 2-8.

Evergreen jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes and never let up in their 74-44 win over Northwest Christian at the CRC Gymnasium. The Geoducks extended their lead too 20 points at the end of the first half and led by as many as a 33 points en route to their third straight Cascade Conference win.
Sammi Clark scored 13 points and dished out nine assists to lead Evergreen and Jessica Denmon notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Uriah Thomas came off the bench to chip in 10 to help the Geoducks improve to 5-5 in league play and 9-8 overall.

Evergreen roared back from a 13 point deficit early in the second half and was within three points after a layup by Dre Taylor cut the Northwest Christian lead to 74-71 with 21 seconds left, but the Beacons went perfect from the line over the next two possessions and escaped Olympia with a 78-73 win.
Frankie Johnson led the Geoducks with 20 points including four 3-pointers. Marc and Dre Taylor each scored in double digits with 17 and 16 point respectively. Evergreen went 0-for-11 from three point range in the second half before burying eight shots from behind the arc in their comeback over the final 20 minutes.

The two teams are now tied for first place in the Narrows at 7-1. The Blazers jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter and extended their lead to 15 points at the break and never looked back to move to 9-6 overall. The Rams fell to 12-4 this season.

A battle for first place hits Timberline High School tonight when the 5-2 Blazers host 6-1 Wilson at 7:00 PM. The two teams met on December 18th in the 3A Narrows opener and freshman Josie Matz scored 17 points for the Rams in a 61-53 win. Callan Russell scored a game high 20 points in the loss for the Blazers.
Timberline is 8-6 overall this season and is riding a three game winning streak after dropping a pair of non-conference games to Central Kitsap and Black Hills. Wilson is 12-3 this season and are ranked #8 in 3A in the latest Scoreczar rankings.

Tumwater hosts WF West tonight in a rematch of an instant classic from December 21st. Josiah Warner scored 31 points including a pair of buzzer beating 3-pointers that kept the T-Birds alive in a triple-overtime 81-78 loss in Chehalis.

The Evergreen women and reigning Cascade Conference Player of the Week Brittany Gray host Northwest Christian in game one of a Geoducks doubleheader at the CRC Gymnasium. Evergreen sits at 4-5 in the CCC after a weekend sweep in Portland and are in seventh place a game behind Southern Oregon and Northwest. The Beacons and Geoducks met on December 21st in Eugene and Sadee Jones scored 14 points in a 70-43 romp.
In game two, former University of Oregon star and former ex-NBA player Luke Jackson brings his Northwest Christian team to town in fifth place in the CCC at 5-4. Meanwhile, the Geoducks are looking for their second win of the conference season after they were swept in Portland last weekend.

Saint Martin’s vs. Alaska – Marcus Pavilion – 9:00 PM
The Saint Martin’s men take on Alaska tonight at Marcus Pavilion in a GNAC battle that will be shown live on ROOT Sports at 9:00 PM. With an alumni rally planned for 7:00 at the Worthington Center and a student tailgate beginning at 7:30 at the TUB behind the pavilion, buzz around campus is extremely high and the atmosphere for the game will be great. And it is quite the bargain. Individual general admission tickets are $6 for adults and are buy one get one free at the door. The Pack the Pavilion night is also a white out and fans are encouraged to wear white.
The Saints come into the game at 3-4 in the GNAC with road wins over Simon Fraser and Western Oregon and an upset of Seattle Pacific in their last home game in early January. The Saints play a four guard offense most of the time and junior Ryan Rogers leads the way with 15.1 points per game with senior Evan Coulter just behind him at 14.1 ppg. Redshirt freshman Isaac Bianchini has scored in double digits in each of the last three games with 15, 18 and 14 points mostly coming from behind the three point line. He is 15-of-26 from behind the arc during that time.
Alaska is one of the biggest surprises of the GNAC season so far sitting in second place at 5-2. The Nanooks of Fairbanks have four players scoring in double-digits led by senior guard Ronnie Baker’s 16 points per game. 6-11 senior center Sergej Pucar is a load in the paint averaging 13.5 ppg and senior forward Andrew Kelly pulls down a team leading 8.2 rebounds per game and adds 11.8 points.

Five of the six SPSCC players played 38+ minutes again while Clark, the top team in the NWAACC, played 12 and none of their players played more than 29 minutes in the Penguins’ 73-47 win over the Clippers. Brian Tyson led South Puget Sound with 13 points and Keegan Liebelt and Brandon McGurkin each added 12.

LaKeisha Anger notched a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds but SPSCC turned the ball over 29 times and took 22 less shots than Clark in a 74-48 loss to the Penguins. Sofia Guerra scored 11 points and Maria Jesse added nine points, eight rebounds and six assists. 2013 Timberline grad Sarah McKee scored four points in 16 minutes for Clark.

Without University of Washington signee Donaven Dorsey, Jarryn Bush scored 30 points and Brandell Evans chipped in 18 to lead Timberline to a 65-62 win over Foss.
The Falcons went on a 15-0 run after halftime and led the the Blazers 47-43 after the third quarter. But the Blazers came back and finished the quarter on an 11-5 run and outscored Foss 22-15 in the fourth quarter to draw themselves even with the Falcons at 4-3 in the 3A Narrows.
Seattle U commit Armond Davis scored 37 points in the loss for the Falcons.

University of California-Berkeley signee Ahmaad Rorie scored eight points in somewhat limited action off of the bench in his first game back since leaving Florida’s Montverde Academy and Lincoln thrashed North Thurston, 68-42. Rorie was declared eligible to play for the 16-1 Abes just hours before the game.
