Saturday Scores: Saints Hoops Finish Regular Season With Wins; Wolves, Hawks Done; Saints Softball Sweeps

The Saint Martin’s women wrapped up the regular season with a 59-52 win over Central Washington in Ellensburg. Angela Gelhar led the way with 13 points and Jordyn Richardson chipped in 10 for the Saints. They will be the 6th seed in the GNAC tournament beginning on Wednesday. They will take on Alaska-Anchorage at 5:15.

Senior guard Evan Coulter scored 26 points with eight rebounds in his last game for Saint Martin’s and the Saints exploded in the second half to knock off Simon Fraser, 76-67, in the season finale for both squads.

Riley Carel added 17 points and dropped seven assists including the alley-oop to Tyler Idowu that gave the Saints a much needed boost of energy and gave them the lead, 48-46, with 11:03 left to play. Idowu had his best game scoring eight points with 12 rebounds.

Besides Coulter, four other senior started for SMU. Matt Dodson scored six points with nine rebounds, Rei Jensen added six points with seven boards and Brad Norman and Kyle Karnofski scored three and two points respectively.

The Saints wrapped up their season at 9-17 overall and the 6-12 mark in the GNAC was good enough for eighth place, two spots ahead of where they were picked to finish in the coaches preseason poll.

Black Hills was never able to recover after White River took a 23-16 lead and the Hornets moved on to State in Yakima with a 71-63 win. Nicole Nurmi and Sarah McGee each scored 18 points and Taylor Sauls chipped in the 12 in the loss.

White River ended the River Ridge boys season with a convincing 70-50 win over the Hawks at Puyallup High School. LaBrandon Price scored 13 points and Kobe Key added 12, but the Hornets held the Hawks’ leading scorer, Jason Kananin, to just three points.

The Saint Martin’s softball team opens the home portion of their schedule today when they host Northwest University in non-conference doubleheader action beginning at noon. The defending GNAC champs and NCAA tournament participants are off to a slow start at 2-5 so far this season.

2A WIAA Regionals – Winner-to-state/loser-out

Black Hills vs. White River – Puyallup HS – 6:00 PM

Black Hills faces a tough test in White River (21-5) in the regionals round at Puyallup High School. The Wolves and senior Sarah McGee are 18-5 overall but three of those losses came to the WF West juggernaut. White River won their district with a 48-45 win over Sumner and now has a short trip to Puyallup and will likely have a big crowd advantage because of their proximity and with their boys team playing right after them on the same court. The game can be heard live on 1240 AM and 95.3 FM KGY.

River Ridge vs. White River – Puyallup HS – 8:00 PM

At 14-10, River Ridge’s record doesn’t look like much. But the Hawks are coming off a pair of loser-out wins in the district tournament that saw Jason Kananin step up and take over. But they get a tough White River team that is 19-7 on the season and won their district. The game can be heard live on 1240 AM and 95.3 FM KGY

The Saint Martin’s men wrap up their season tonight with a very winnable game against Simon Fraser. It will be the last collegiate game for seniors Evan Coulter, Rei Jensen, Matt Dodson, Brad Norman and Kyle Karnofski.

River Ridge built a big lead after one quarter and never looked back to end Tumwater’s season and advance to regionals with a 74-62 win at Capital High School. Jason Kananin followed up his 31 point night on Thursday with 23 points. Zach DeLucco scored 20 for the T-Birds.

Seattle U commit Armond Davis scored 41 points to lead Foss to a third place district finish with an 80-74 win over Timberline at Clover Park High School in Lakewood. Despite the loss, the Blazers are bound for regionals. Brandell Evans scored 22 points and Donaven Dorsey added 18 in the loss.

Southern Utah signee Sarah McGee was not ready to end her high school career and put up 23 points to lead Black Hills to a 72-56 win over River Ridge the District IV consolation bracket final. The Wolves move onto regionals with the win while the Hawks’ season came to an end. Taylor Sauls added 17 points in the win. Makenna Schultz led the Hawks with 16 points and Jazzlynn Brewster and Savannah McGill chipped in 15 and 12 points respectively.

Women’s basketball
Saint Martin’s vs. Montana State-Billings – Marcus Pavilion – 7:00 PM

Still needing at least one win in their last three games to qualify for the GNAC tournament, the Saint Martin’s women play host to the top team in the GNAC and the #1 ranked team in the West, Montana State-Billings, tonight at 7:00 PM. The Saints probably gave their most disappointing effort on Thursday night against Seattle Pacific and have lost six of their last nine games after a 5-1 start to conference play.

2A District IV consolation final – Winner to regionals/loser-out
River Ridge vs. Black Hills – Capital HS – 6:00 PM

The two best girls basketball teams in the Olympia area meet tonight at Capital High School with just one regionals berth available. Either Black Hills or River Ridge will have their season come to an end. The two teams split their season series: the Wolves won 62-61 in the first game on a buzzer beater in the first game while the Hawks dominated game two.

3A WCD/Bi-District 3rd/4th place game – Both to regionals
Timberline vs. Foss – Clover Park HS, Lakewood – 6:00 PM

Both Timberline and Foss have already qualified for regionals but the two teams that tied for third place in the 3A Narrows will battle for seeding tonight in the 3rd/4th place game at Clover Park High School.


2A District IV consolation final – Winner to regionals/loser-out

River Ridge vs. Tumwater – Capital HS – 7:45 PM

After dropping their opening round district game, Tumwater has survived loser-out games twice to make the consolation final. They face another loser-out game tonight against River Ridge, who survived by taking down Centralia on Thursday. The Hawks won the first meeting between the two teams, 61-54, but the T-Birds took their second meeting on the last day of the regular season, 78-69.

Tumwater used a 21 point first quarter to build a ten point lead and played even with Capital the rest of the way to survive once again and move on with a 57-49 win in game one of a loser-out doubleheader at WF West. David Cooper scored 20 points and Zach DeLucco added 17 for the T-Birds . They now have a chance to advance to regionals when they face River Ridge on Saturday at Capital High School.

Jason Kananin and River Ridge came out firing on all cylinders and built a 16 point lead after one quarter and scored 50 points in the first half and weathered a late Centralia rally to advance with an 83-77 win in game two at WF West. Kananin scored 31 points and Israel Williams chipped in 18 and the Hawks moved on to play Tumwater on Saturday for a trip to regionals.

It took Saint Martin’s over seven minutes to record their first field goal of the game, shot just 20% in the first half and heated up slightly in the second half to shoot 24.6% in the game and dropped a 54-44 decision to Seattle Pacific.

Despite the putrid shooting, the Saints tied the game at 28 with 15:15 left on an Angela Gelhar three pointer. But Suzanna Ohlsen’s layup at the 11:52 mark completed a 10-0 run for the Falcons and the Saints never threatened again and dropped their third straight game and fell into sixth place in the GNAC at 8-7.Ohlsen led all scorers with 25 points with eight rebounds.

The Saints are two games ahead of Northwest Nazarene (6-9) for the last playoff spot with three games left to play.

Alaska Anchorage held a 39-12 advantage from behind the three point line and outscored Saint Martin’s by 17 points from the charity stripe to knock off the Saints 88-76. Evan Coulter scored 23 points, Ryan Rogers chipped in 19 and Riley Carel added 17 points with eight assists for the Saints in the loss.

Tonight (2/20): Saints Face Falcons in Important GNAC Contest; T-Birds, Cougs, Hawks Try to Survive

Saint Martin’s vs. Seattle Pacific – Marcus Pavilion – 7:00 PM

Important GNAC battle tonight at Marcus Pavilion when Saint Martin’s hosts Seattle Pacific at 7:00 PM. The two teams are tied for fifth place in the conference standings with the top six teams making the conference tournament.

The Saints sit 2 1/2 games ahead seventh place Northwest Nazarene and need a pair of wins in the last two games to clinch a playoff spot. They finish the season against NNU in Nampa next Saturday. The Saints could take over sole possession of fifth place with a win and could move into fourth place if Alaska Anchorage loses to Simon Fraser tonight.

The Saints have been terrific at Marcus Pavilion. They are 9-1 and have given up just 54 points per game on their home court.

Krista Stabler scored 21 points in their first meeting in Seattle and the Saints met a 14 point lead in the first half before the Falcons stormed back shooting 68% in the second half to take a 78-68 win.

It’s an all 2A EvCo Distirct IV consolation bracket semifinal tonight at WF West when Capital takes on Tumwater at 6:00 PM and River Ridge faces Centralia in the second game of a loser-out doubleheader.

Capital upset Centralia in the opening round of districts but fell to Hockinson on Tuesday night while Tumwater lost to Mark Morris in the first round and survived against RA Long two nights ago. The T-Birds took the first meeting between the two teams on December 17th, 69-55, but the Cougars captured a 55-49 win on January 21st. Tumwater finished in fourth in the 2A EvCo at 6-6 while Capital was a game behind them at 5-7.

One of the two top teams in the 2A EvCo will see their season end tonight when River Ridge faces Centralia. Centralia won the regular season at 10-2 but lost to Capital in the opening round before blowing out rival WF West on Tuesday to continue their season. River Ridge beat RA Long in the first round but the other Longview school, Mark Morris, did them in on Tuesday. The Tigers and Hawks split the season series.

Timberline outscored Enuclaw 59-42 after falling behind by nine after the first quarter and advanced to regionals with a 69-61 win. The Blazers ended the Hornets eight game winning streak and moved into the semifinals where they will face Lincoln for the third time this season Friday night at Rogers High School in Puyallup. Brandell Evans scored 24 points and Donaven Dorsey added 22.

Aberdeen fought back from a big deficit in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get over the hump and River Ridge stayed alive with a 50-42 win in the second game in Chehalis. The Hawks will meet Black Hills on Saturday at 6:00 PM in a winner to regionals/loser-out game back at WF West.

SPSCC wrapped up their 2013-2014 season with a 86-48 loss to first place Clark in Vancouver. Ashley Stancil and LaKeisha Anger scored 14 and 13 points respectively and the Clippers finished with five division wins and went 6-19 overall. Anger finished as third in the NWAACC West scoring 15.8 points per game and fifth in the NWAACC with 10.41 rebounds per game.

Keegan Liebelt, Brandon McGurkin, Slanblaytee Kaye, Jonathan Roberts and Brian Tyson had their last 40 minute club meeting tonight with an 88-69 loss to the top team in the NWAACC, Clark, in Vancouver. Kaye scored 15.5 points per game, pulled down 8.09 rebounds per game, and was third in the NWAACC with 5.59 assists per game. The Clippers finished with just two wins this season.

Timberline got 40 points out of Jarryn Bush and Donaven Dorsey to lead the Blazers to a 63-55 win over Peninsula and survived to take on the #1 seed in the 3A WCD/Bi-District playoffs, Enumclaw, tonight at Washington High School in Tacoma.

The Hornets are 19-3 this season and have won eight straight games and 12 of their last 13 games since the new year. They are led by a pair of seniors, 6-8 forward Drake Rademacher (17.8 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and Bryce Peterson (16.3 ppg, 8.5 rpg).

The winner secures a spot in regionals and moves on to play either Lincoln or Columbia River in the semifinals on Friday night at Rogers High School in Puyallup. The loser will fall into the consolation bracket and will face a loser out game on Friday at Washington High School against the loser of the Lincoln/Columbia River game.

After pulling the upset of league champion Centralia in the first round, Capital fell to Hockinson in the 2A District IV semifinals, 79-66, at Kelso High School. The Cougars will next face a  loser-out game on Thursday night in Chehalis against Tumwater.
