Saint Martin’s vs. Northwest Christian – Marcus Pavilion – 7:00 PM
The Saint Martin’s men FINALLY play their first non-exhibition game of the season on their home court at Marcus Pavilion tonight when they face Northwest Christian at 7:00 PM.
The Saints went 2-6 in counting games while on the road including a split in GNAC play. They knocked off Simon Fraser 78-62 on December 5th and fell to Western Washington 87-75 on December 7th. They have played two exhibition games against Division I opponents and hung with Montana on Sunday night, trailing by just eight twice in the second half.
Northwest Christian is 7-3 in their first season under head coach Luke Jackson. Jackson was one of the best and most popular players to come out of the University of Oregon and was the tenth overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. Now he is the head coach of the NAIA school across the street from his alma mater. The Beacons are led by Spencer Coleman’s 20.7 points per game and 11.1 rebounds per game.

Narrows League play continues tonight with a big game at Timberline High School where Donaven Dorsey and the Blazers take on Alphonso Anderson and the odds on favorites in the 3A Narrows, the Wilson Rams.
Wilson is 1-0 in the 3A Narrows League coming off a 40 point win against Mount Tahoma on Friday night while Timberline sits at 0-1 in league after falling to Foss in overtime. The Blazers bounced back on Saturday with a double overtime win at Kentwood. Dorsey scored 44 of their 66 points in the game.

Yelm’s stifling full court defense and 6-4 sophomore Christian Davis’ explosion erased a 19-17 halftime deficit with an 11-3 third quarter and Yelm held on in a long and wild fourth quarter to knock off Olympia, 50-41, in the 4A Narrows League opener at Chick Rockey Gym.
Davis scored a game high 17 points including a layup at the 4:16 mark of the third quarter that gave Yelm the lead, 22-21. Davis was hammered as he knifed through traffic on the next possession and hit one of two free throws to give Yelm a two point lead before Chad Davis hit a jumper in the lane on the next possession to give the Tornadoes a 25-21 lead, one that they would never relinquish.
The two teams scored a combined 41 points in a foul and free throw filled, timeout laden fourth quarter that took nearly as long as the rest of the game to play.
Christopher Burian added 16 points for Yelm, who moved to 1-0 in the 4A Narrows League. Mitch Fettig scored 13 points and Khalil Matheney notched 10 quiet points for the Bears, who fell to 0-1 in league.

New, revised reclassification numbers have been released by the WIAA and it confirms a couple of major changes for the 2014-2016 seasons.
Here’s how the Olympia area (Thurston County plus Shelton) break down…
4A: Olympia, Timberline, Yelm
3A: Capital, North Thurston, Shelton
2A: Tumwater, Black Hills, River Ridge, Rochester
1A: Tenino
2B: Rainier
1B: Northwest Christian, Pope John Paul II
Olympia, Timberline and Yelm will all be some of the smallest schools in 4A with Olympia the largest at 1287. The cutoff between 4A and 3A is Marysville-Getchell at 1252. Timberline is listed as “still working with WIAA on enrollment #’s” so there is still a chance that they could land in 3A.
Capital will be one of the smallest 3A schools that didn’t opt up from a lower division. Rochester will be one of the smallest 2A schools while Tumwater will be one of the largest.
Rainier is now solidly in 2B and I would expect them to stay there and not opt up. Northwest Christian falls to 1B, but it would not surprise me at all to see them opt up to 2B and finally have a short drive for an opponent in Rainier.
Schools have the option to opt up until the first week of January.

The league portion of the 2013-2014 season tips off tonight for Northwest Christian and the Narrows League schools. The Navigators take on North Beach at Compass Arena at NCHS at 7:00 PM, while Olympia hosts Yelm also at 7:00. Timberline and North Thurston open league play on the road.
Northwest Christian is 2-2 in the early going with wins over The Northwest School and Orting. North Beach, meanwhile, is 3-0 with wins over three 1A Evergreen schools – Forks, Montesano and Hoquiam.
Olympia is 3-1 this season with a pair of wins over Capital. The inexperience Bears – they had to replace all five starters from last year’s team – have found offense in Khalil Matheney, a senior transfer from Hawaii’s Leilahua High School on Oahu. Matheney is averaging 14.3 points per game including a 22 point performance against the Cougars on Wednesday. Oly will face 2-1 Yelm tonight.

North Thurston vs. Lincoln – North Thurston HS – 7:00 PM
Timberline vs. Foss – Timberline HS – 7:00 PM
The North Thurston and Timberline girls open their league seasons tonight with home games against Lincoln and Foss. Both the Rams and Blazers are 1-1 this season.
The Rams picked up an easy win over Capital on Monday led by Megan Kramer’s 20 points while the Blazers lost by just three points to River Ridge in their opener and won by three points at Olympia last Friday.

Women’s basketball
Evergreen vs. UPS – CRC Gymnasium – 6:00 PM
The Evergreen women look to bounce back after a pair of losses in their opening weekend of Cascade Conference play with a non-conference game tonight against UPS. The two losses snapped a four game losing streak and the Geoducks now sit at 4-4 this season. This is their last home game of 2013 and they will not play again at the CRC Gymnasium until January 10. UPS sits at 5-2 this year and are coming off of a split with the College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon, the two teams that Evergreen lost to last weekend.
Men’s basketball
Evergreen vs. UPS – CRC Gymnasium – 8:00 PM
The men opened the season with a win over UBC-Okanogan but have now lost ten straight exhibition and regular season games including a convincing sweep by College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon over the weekend. Tonight they get a rematch with UPS, who dropped them 71-58 on November 15th at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma. Kyle Calhoun scored 24 points including five three pointers in the loss. North Thurston grad Matt Reid is averaging 11.1 minutes per game for the Loggers.
