The Saint Martin’s women wrapped up the regular season with a 59-52 win over Central Washington in Ellensburg. Angela Gelhar led the way with 13 points and Jordyn Richardson chipped in 10 for the Saints. They will be the 6th seed in the GNAC tournament beginning on Wednesday. They will take on Alaska-Anchorage at 5:15.

Senior guard Evan Coulter scored 26 points with eight rebounds in his last game for Saint Martin’s and the Saints exploded in the second half to knock off Simon Fraser, 76-67, in the season finale for both squads.
Riley Carel added 17 points and dropped seven assists including the alley-oop to Tyler Idowu that gave the Saints a much needed boost of energy and gave them the lead, 48-46, with 11:03 left to play. Idowu had his best game scoring eight points with 12 rebounds.
Besides Coulter, four other senior started for SMU. Matt Dodson scored six points with nine rebounds, Rei Jensen added six points with seven boards and Brad Norman and Kyle Karnofski scored three and two points respectively.
The Saints wrapped up their season at 9-17 overall and the 6-12 mark in the GNAC was good enough for eighth place, two spots ahead of where they were picked to finish in the coaches preseason poll.

Black Hills was never able to recover after White River took a 23-16 lead and the Hornets moved on to State in Yakima with a 71-63 win. Nicole Nurmi and Sarah McGee each scored 18 points and Taylor Sauls chipped in the 12 in the loss.

The Saint Martin’s softball team opens the home portion of their schedule today when they host Northwest University in non-conference doubleheader action beginning at noon. The defending GNAC champs and NCAA tournament participants are off to a slow start at 2-5 so far this season.

Black Hills vs. White River – Puyallup HS – 6:00 PM
Black Hills faces a tough test in White River (21-5) in the regionals round at Puyallup High School. The Wolves and senior Sarah McGee are 18-5 overall but three of those losses came to the WF West juggernaut. White River won their district with a 48-45 win over Sumner and now has a short trip to Puyallup and will likely have a big crowd advantage because of their proximity and with their boys team playing right after them on the same court. River Ridge vs. White River – Puyallup HS – 8:00 PM
At 14-10, River Ridge’s record doesn’t look like much. But the Hawks are coming off a pair of loser-out wins in the district tournament that saw Jason Kananin step up and take over. But they get a tough White River team that is 19-7 on the season and won their district. The game can be heard live on 1240 AM and 95.3 FM KGY

The Saint Martin’s men wrap up their season tonight with a very winnable game against Simon Fraser. It will be the last collegiate game for seniors Evan Coulter, Rei Jensen, Matt Dodson, Brad Norman and Kyle Karnofski.

Eastside Catholic absolutely blitzed Timberline from the opening tip and ended the Blazers’ season with an 80-40 regionals win at Bellevue College. Matisse Thybulle scored 20 points for the Crusaders while UW bound Donaven Dorsey saw his high school career come to an end with 11 points to lead the Blazers. Timberline finished their season at 13-12 overall.

Boys basketball
3A WIAA Regionals – Winner-to-state/loser-out
Timberline vs. Eastside Catholic – Bellevue College – 6:00 PM
The Blazers have lost two straight games and three of their last five games but earned a spot in regionals with wins over Peninsula and Enumclaw in the first and second round of the district tournament. They then fell to Lincoln in the semifinals and Foss in the 3rd/4th place game.
Timberline is 13-11 overall this season and is led by Washington signee Donaven Dorsey (20 points, 10 rebounds per game) and usually get a big contribution from one of their other starters, lately that has been either Brandell Evans or Jarryn Bush.
Eastside Catholic finished in second place of the 3A Metro, behind just nationally ranked powerhouse Rainier Beach. Three of the Crusaders five losses came to Rainier Beach. Twice they were blown out but fell by just three on the Vikings’ home court. Their other two losses came to O’Dea and Chaminade of California.
They are led by Mandrell Worthy, a 6-3 junior that missed the last game against Rainier Beach with an ankle injury. The Blazers will also have to deal with twin seniors Ian and and Nathan Cristie if they want to make a repeat visit to the Tacoma Dome.

Chelsea Haskey scored 20 points, 12 in the second half on 6-of-7 shooting, and Jordyn Richardson scored 17 points, 13 in the first half on 3-of-3 shooting from the three point line to lead Saint Martin’s to their first win over Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho since the 2005.
The Saints moved to 10-7 in the GNAC with the win and are currently tied for fifth with Seattle Pacific. Both teams have already clinched a spot in the conference tournament and are playing for seeding on Saturday. The Saints take on Central Washington in Ellensburg while the Falcons face Alaska on their home court in the last game of the regular season.

Will Bond scored 15 points off the bench and Evan Coulter added 14 for Saint Martin’s but Western Washington hit on all cylinders in the second half and ran past the Saints, 80-56. The Vikings went on a 21-5 run over the first six and a half minutes of the second half to build a 26 point lead at the 13:33 mark.

Saint Martin’s vs. Western Washington – Marcus Pavilion – 7:00 PM
Two games remain for five Saint Martin’s seniors – Evan Coulter, Rei Jensen, Kyle Karnofski, Brad Norman and Matt Dodson – and they have a tough test tonight when Black Hills grad Anye Turner and Western Washington hit Marcus Pavilion for a 7:00 PM tip.
The Saints are 5-11, good enough for eighth place ahead of Simon Fraser and Northwest Nazarene. SMU was picked to finish last in the conference this season and are led by Coulter’s 15.7 and junior Ryan Rogers’ 14.5 points per game.
Western Washington sits at 12-4 in the GNAC, one game behind first place Seattle Pacific, and 18-6 overall. Turner has started 21 of their 24 games and is averaging 9.4 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game and is one of the most electric forwards in the GNAC. The Vikings are led by Austin Bragg and Richard Woodworth. They are scoring 17.8 and 17.4 points per game respectively.

Evergreen’s Season Comes to an End in Ashland

Seniors Sammi Clark and Jessica Denmon scored 22 and 12 points respectively but the Monica Heuer era at Evergreen came to an end with an 80-70 road loss to Southern Oregon in the first round of the Cascade Conference Championships. Denmon also hauled in 14 rebounds in her final collegiate game. The Geoducks were unable to stop Autumn Durand, who scored 30 points with nine boards to move the Raiders into the CCC semifinals.
Evergreen finished the season at 14-12, their best winning percentage in program history and second most wins in program history, second only to the 2004-2005 team’s 16 wins, and only the second season with a winning percentage. Heuer ended her 13 year run as head coach with a 111-257 record. Her teams made the CCC playoffs seven times but never hosted a postseason game and never won a playoff game.

Cascade Conference Tournament – First Round
Evergreen @ Southern Oregon – Ashland, Oregon – 7:00 PM
The Evergreen women’s basketball team travels to Ashland, Oregon to take on Southern Oregon tonight at 7:00 PM in the first round of the Cascade Conference Tournament.
The Geoducks went 10-8 in CCC play this season and earned the fifth seed matching their best conference finish from 2004-2005. They have never won a playoff game in sixth previous tries, all under outgoing head coach Monica Heuer. Four Geoducks average in double-figures scoring this season: Sammi Clark (14.7), Brittany Gray (13.8), Jessica Denmon (11.2) and Sadee Jones (10.8). Gray is also fourth in the CCC with 8.8 rebounds per game.
Southern Oregon went 12-6 in conference play and is led by Rainier High School grad Kristin Schoenherr with 15.1 points per game. Elma’s Carly Meister averages 14.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. The Raiders are first in scoring at 85.2 points and went 23-7 overall.
The two teams met twice in the regular season and Southern Oregon took both meetings, 86-72 on January 10th in Olympia and 73-62 on February 8th in Ashland.

River Ridge built a big lead after one quarter and never looked back to end Tumwater’s season and advance to regionals with a 74-62 win at Capital High School. Jason Kananin followed up his 31 point night on Thursday with 23 points. Zach DeLucco scored 20 for the T-Birds.

Southern Utah signee Sarah McGee was not ready to end her high school career and put up 23 points to lead Black Hills to a 72-56 win over River Ridge the District IV consolation bracket final. The Wolves move onto regionals with the win while the Hawks’ season came to an end. Taylor Sauls added 17 points in the win. Makenna Schultz led the Hawks with 16 points and Jazzlynn Brewster and Savannah McGill chipped in 15 and 12 points respectively.

The Saint Martin’s women bounced back from a dreadful effort on Thursday night to knock off the GNAC’s top team and #25 ranked team in Division II, Montana State-Billings, 69-59 on senior night at Marcus Pavilion.
Megan Wiedeman had a career night with 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots including seven quick points to start the game and a three pointer at the 5:02 mark of the second half that gave the Saints a 56-52 lead.
After the Yellowjackets took a 45-39 lead, Chelsea Haskey’s six straight points capped off a Saints comeback and gave the Saints a 51-50 lead. The senior scored 15 points in the second half and finished with 17 in the game to lead the Saints in her last career regular season home game.
Senior Jori Skorpik dished out seven assists and scored six points but most importantly hounded the Yellowjackets’ Bobbi Knudsen the entire game. Knudsen finished with 19 points but went just 8-for-26 from the floor.
The Saints now sit at 9-7 in the GNAC, two games ahead of Northwest Nazarene for the last GNAC tournament spot with two games left to play. The Saints and Crusaders face each other on Thursday in Nampa.

The playoff bound Evergreen women couldn’t quite hold on to a double-digit lead in the second half and fell to first place Eastern Oregon, 63-60, in LaGrande, Oregon. The Geoducks led until the 3:19 mark of the second half but the Mountaineers finally completed the comeback and clinched the Cascade Conference regular season title with their win.
Brittany Gray scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Jessica Denmon and Sadee Jones each notched 10 points in the regular season finale.
The Geoducks finished 10-8 in the Cascade Conference, good enough for fifth place. They will travel to fourth place Southern Oregon on Tuesday to open the CCC tournament.

Evergreen’s season came to an end with a 79-69 loss to Eastern Oregon in LaGrande. Seniors Kyle Calhoun, Marc Taylor and Cody Peters led the way for the Geoducks in their last game with 18, 14 and 11 points respectively. Jordan Dam added 10 points in the loss. The Geoducks finished the season with four wins, two more than last season and three more in the 2011-2012 season.
