SPSCC vs. Edmonds – SPSCC Gym – 7:00 PM
New South Puget Sound head coach Aaron Landon has assembled an all new team composed of 12 freshmen that will get a tough early season test tonight when they face NWAACC championship runners-up Edmonds on the SPSCC campus at 7:00 PM.
The Clippers are coming off a ten point loss in their opener to the Concordia University JV squad but got a good look at their young team. Joseph Johnson hit seven three pointers to lead the way with 26 points, Austin Bonds chipped in 21, Slanblaytee Kaye chipped in 12 with seven assists and Olympia grad Michael Champlin racked up ten points.
Edmonds lost their two best players from last season, Shaquielle McKissic, who transferred to Arizona State, and Ricardo Maxwell, now at Western Washington, and has just two returners from last year’s squad.
Josh Phillips Named WCC Defender of the Year
Josh Phillips, a 2010 graduate of Capital and currently a senior at Gonzaga University, was named the West Coast Conference’s Defender of the Year today. From GoZags.com…
“Phillips (Olympia, Wash.) joins Nick Barclay in 2008 as the only other Bulldog to earn Defender of the Year accolades. A mainstay on the Bulldog defense he was instrumental in Gonzaga allowing opponents just 0.95 goals/match. The 10 wins for the Bulldogs this season marked the first double-digit wins season since 2000, and Gonzaga’s 5-4-3 WCC record for third place is the highest finish since 2008. He earned All-WCC second-team honors in 2011.
Phillips said it’s a great honor to be chosen.
‘I was pretty excited when I heard the news. It’s a great honor to be recognized with this award, not only for me but as a program we really turned things around this year. It’s been a wonderful ride this year.'”
Gonzaga went 10-6-3 overall this season and finished in third place of the WCC at 5-4-3 behind Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara. The Zags did not receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships on Sunday.
Phillips is the second local alum honored in Division I soccer. Tumwater grad Abbey Bergquist was named the Big Sky’s Newcomer of the Year. She made 16 starts for Portland State and scored a pair of goals with a pair of assists.
All-Narrows League Football Teams: Becker Named 4A Offensive MVP
3A Offensive MVP Derrick Becker celebrates after beating South Kitsap
Earlier this week the Narrows League released their all-league football teams and Olympia QB Derrick Becker was named the 4A Offensive MVP. Becker, a transfer from Capital this season, led the Bears to a 7-3 record but just barely missed out on the playoffs.
MVP honors went to Gig Harbor’s running back Sterling Brown in 4A and Lincoln running back Rayshawn Miller in 3A.

How Not To Tweet 3: A November to Remember
Oh boy, I hate to have to do these posts but I think it is important to point out that even if you think what you are posting on Twitter is private, it isn’t.
All of these tweets come from a 2013 local high school graduate who will be playing sports at an NWAACC community college. I’m not outing his name or school, though I easily could, but using this as a warning to others to think about what you tweet. I followed him before he protected his account so I was grandfathered into still seeing his tweets.
I’m not even really upset about the drugs, I think weed makes you boring and stupid but I don’t think it is particularly dangerous. But none of these tweets from an 18-19 year old paint a very good picture and reflect poorly on him, his high school program, his current college program and are generally repulsive and could negatively affect his life if his current coach, athletic department, future coaches or employers or less non-narc-y media types see them.
Anyway, without further ado, let’s start out with a doozie. No doubt about this one…

Concordia JV 88, SPSCC 78 – Box score
Riley Carel scored 22 points and Ryan Rogers added 21 but Saint Martin’s was unable to overcome a 24 point first half deficit and fell 86-79 in Riverside, California. The Saints are now 0-4 this season.
Division I Seattle University outrebounded Evergreen 68-28 and had 32 second chance points in their 100-59 win at Key Arena in Seattle. KJ Hong scored 17 points and Kwame Awadjie chipped in ten points for the Geoducks, who went just 5-for-23 from downtown and shot just 34% from the field.
SPSCC opened their season with an 88-78 loss to the Concordia University JV team at the SPSCC gym. Joseph Johnson hit seven three pointers and led the Clippers with 26 points and Austin Bonds scored 21 points and had six steals in the loss.

Riddled by injuries and relegated to Capital High School for the third time in the past month because of other events taking place on their on campus home court, Saint Martin’s dropped their eighth straight match with a 3-1 loss to lowly Montana-State Billings.
Freshmen Brooke Good, Larissa Hamilton and Maddie Knect combined for 34 kills on the night and senior Cymbree Decosta, playing in her last game in the general vicinity of home, added 43 assists in the loss.

Tumwater 52, Sehome 22 – The Olympian
Tyrus Snow rushed for 171 yard and three touchdowns and Christian Cummings 173 yards and a touchdown to lead Tumwater to a 52-22 win over Sehome in the opening round of the state playoffs at Tumwater Stadium.
The T-Birds jumped out to a 14-0 lead on Cummings’ 71 yard rushing TD and a fumble recovery in the endzone by Dayton Newell. Snow scored the next four touchdowns in the second and third quarters to extend Tumwater’s lead to 42-8.
The T-Birds continued their undefeated season and will travel to Buckley to take on White River in the quarterfinals next Friday or Saturday.
PHOTO GALLERY: Cougars Take Second Place
Burlington-Edison knocked off Capital in three sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17, to capture the 2A state championship at Pierce College in Steilacoom. It was the best finish for the Cougars since current head coach Natalie Rhodes and the 1994 squad took second place.
