Stewart and Johnson still battling injuries; Tough luck for Conley; Saints men picked 7th

Tuesday news and notes (updated throughout the day)

Jonathan Stewart

Jonathan Stewart

Timberline alum Jonathan Stewart still has not practiced for the Carolina Panthers this preseason and will not play on Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens. There is no timetable for his return from surgery on both of his ankles during the offseason and head coach Ron Rivera said that it is possible that he ends up on the physically unable to perform list. If he is put on the PUP list, he will miss the first six weeks of the season. – Link

In other NFL injury news, Tumwater’s Matt Johnson was hoping to return to practice on Monday for the Dallas Cowboys but still has not seen the field since his injury in the Hall of Fame game. The Cowboys expect him to practice either at the end of this week or next week. – Link

Touch luck loss for Olympia alum Adam Conley last night. Conley struck out seven, gave up three hits and one walk over six innings but allowed a solo home run and an RBI double in Jacksonville’s 2-1 loss in game one of a doubleheader in Chattanooga. Conley is now 11-6 this season with a 3.29 ERA for the Miami Marlins double-A affiliate. – Link

2013 Olympia area high school graduates playing collegiate athletics

With the college sports season almost upon us, here is an incomplete list of 2013 Olympia area high school graduates that are moving on to play collegiate athletics. Like I said, this is incomplete because I am sure that I am missing people. For example, I can’t believe just one athlete from River Ridge is going to play collegiately this season.

So if you know of someone that I missed or perhaps I have some bad information on somebody listed, please either email me at olysportsblog@gmail.com or leave a comment.

Evergreen State College basketball star Michael Parker is moving from the Shimane Susanoo Magic of Japan’s bj-league to the Wakayama Trians of the National Basketball League. Parker, the Cascade Conference Defensive Player of the Year and All-Cascade Conference first teamer in the 2002-2003 season, has been a star in Japan spending the last two seasons with Shimane and four seasons before that with Rizing Fukuoka. He led the bj-league in scoring four times and steals five times. He will team with his former coach Zeljko Pavlicevic and will play on wooden basketball courts in the NBL instead of the unpopular synthetic courts that the bj-league uses. – Link

Matt Johnson

Tumwater grad Matt Johnson ran with the second team defense last night for the Dallas Cowboys in their 24-21 win over the Miami Dolphins in the Hall of Fame Game. Unfortunately for Johnson, who missed all of his rookie season with an injury, he landed awkwardly on a tackle and didn’t return. X-rays on his ankle were negative, but he will have an MRI when the Cowboys return to Oxnard, California this morning. – Link

Timberline alum Jonathan Stewart had surgery on both ankles this off-season and has yet to practice for the Carolina Panthers. The team says they have no idea when he will be ready to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list. – Link

New York Jets backup center Caleb Schlauderaff struggled in Saturday night’s scrimmage and the Shelton graduate is on the “roster bubble” in his third season with the Jets. – Link

4A West Central/Southwest Bi-District Tournament
Olympia 3, Puyallup 2
Tahoma 4, Olympia 1

Puyallup looked to have ended Olympia’s season on Monday afternoon after scoring a run when Bears’ Leticia Farias could not make a catch of a pop up after a Viking runner collided with her.

But after a lengthy delay, obstruction was called to end the inning and send the game to extra innings where Hailey Hull hit a sacrifice fly to score the game winning run and send Olympia to the state tournament in Spokane later this week.

Olympia lost a seeding game to Tahoma later in the day and will be the #7 seed from the district. They will take on Central Valley on Friday, May 24th at noon at the Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane.

It is the first state tournament appearance for the Bears since 2004.

3A West Central/Southwest Bi-District Tournament
Enumclaw 10, Timberline 4
Auburn Mountainview 16, Timberline 2

Timberline needed just one win to play in the 3A state tournament at The RAC beginning on Friday but could only manage six runs and saw their season come to an end at the Sprinker Recreation Center in Spananway.

Today (5/20): District softball might finally play
