Reclassification Numbers: Timberline to 4A, Capital to 3A, Rochester to 2A
UPDATE: The WIAA released new numbers on December 13th. See story here.
Enrollment data for the upcoming reclassification of Washington State high schools has been released by the WIAA and there are some interesting possible movements in the Olympia area.
The Daily News has done the heavy lifting and broke down the numbers by expected classification considering teams have the option to opt up to higher classifications.
What it shows for Thurston County schools is that Timberline will move up to 4A, Capital will move up to 3A and Rochester will likely move up to 2A. Rainier sits on the very edge of 1A and could easily drop down to 2B if a school smaller than them decides to opt up to 1A.
So we will likely see local schools in these classifications for the 2014-2016 seasons…
4A: Olympia, Timberline, Yelm
3A: Capital, North Thurston, Shelton
2A: Tumwater, Black Hills, River Ridge, Rochester
1A: Tenino, Rainier (maybe)
2B: Northwest Christian, Rainier (maybe)
1B: Pope John Paul II
Today (11/22): Bears Face Issaquah in Semis; Saints Women Host Lancers
Girls soccer
4A State Tournament Semifinals
Olympia vs. Issaquah – Sparks Stadium, Puyallup – 8:00 PM
The Bears have lived by the shootout this postseason winning three of their four games after regulation and extra time. The Bears sit at 15-3-2 and feature sophomore Sophie Kabel in goal, a freshman, Jenna Killman, who has scored 14 goals and the 4A Narrows League MVP Megan Spataro on defense.
They face Issaquah, who are 14-4-1 this season and finished third in the KingCo.
You can listen to the action live on the Eli Sports Network.
Women’s basketball
Saint Martin’s vs. Cal Baptist – Marcus Pavilion – 7:00 PM
The 1-1 Saints women return to the Marcus Pavilion court after nearly two weeks off when they take on Cal Baptist tonight at 7:00 PM. SMU last played on November 9th when they picked up a 74-56 win over Notre Dame de Namur in Monmouth, Oregon.
Cal Baptist won the PacWest last year finishing with a 26-5 record but the Lancers return just one player from last year’s squad. Despite a virtually all new team, they are picked to finish third in their league and currently sit at 2-1.
You can watch tonight’s game with me, Brandon Sparks, on the call on the Saint Martin’s website.
All-Narrows League Football Teams: Becker Named 4A Offensive MVP
Earlier this week the Narrows League released their all-league football teams and Olympia QB Derrick Becker was named the 4A Offensive MVP. Becker, a transfer from Capital this season, led the Bears to a 7-3 record but just barely missed out on the playoffs.
MVP honors went to Gig Harbor’s running back Sterling Brown in 4A and Lincoln running back Rayshawn Miller in 3A.

Capital and Tumwater head up to Steilacoom for the 2A tourney. The T-Birds get it going bright and early at 8:00 AM and the Cougars will follow them up on the same court at 9:45.
The Olympian did the heavy lifting and has a quick preview of all three tournaments (4A, 3A, 2A) and you can listen to the 2A tournament on the Eli Sports Network.

4A state tournament quarterfinals – Bracket
Olympia vs. Inglemoor – Ingersoll Stadium – 7:00 PM
Olympia pulled off a minor shocker (at least to me) when they dropped Edmonds-Woodway at Edmonds Stadium on Tuesday. They now get to host their quarterfinal match-up with Inglemoor at 7:00 PM.
Inglemoor pulled off a 1-0 win over Kentridge and improved to 12-2-3 this season. The Vikings have scored just 35 goals this season but have allowed just seven goals. They feature Oregon commit Abby Morrow at Midfield and Forward.
The winner of tonight’s game will move into the semis and will face either Skyline or Issaquah at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner at 8:00 PM next Friday.
High school football
1A State Tournament First Round – Bracket
Tenino vs. King’s – Tiger Stadium, Centralia – 7:00 PM
Tenino has been rolling winners of four straight games and six of their last seven after an 0-3 start. They knocked off White Salmon convincingly, 41-7, last week and now turn their sights on King’s.
The private school in Shoreline plays in the mixed 1A/2A Cascade Conference and played seven 2A schools this season including close losses to Lynden and Lakewood, their only two losses of the season. They get to tune up all season long against 2A teams and then drop down to battle 1A schools once the postseason rolls around. In the crossover game, they easily beat Eatonville 30-12.
ScoreCzar is picking King’s to win 27-10. You can hear a webcast of the game on the KELA website.

4A State Tournament First Round
Olympia 2, Edmonds-Woodway 0 – Story from The Herald
Maggie DeBell scored in the 18th minute and Jenna Killman added an insurance goal in the final two minutes and Olympia pulled off the road upset over District 1 champion Edmonds-Woodway in the first round of the 4A WIAA State Tournament. Sophomore Sophie Kabel made 10 saves in the shutout, the third straight shutout of the postseason for the Bears.
They will next host a home game in the quarterfinals Friday night against Inglemoor, who were a 1-0 winner over Kentridge on Tuesday.

Girl’s soccer
4A State Tournament First Round
Olympia @ Edmonds-Woodway – Edmonds Stadium – 7:00 PM
Olympia takes to the road for the first round game of the state tournament and will have to take on a tough opponent in District 1 champion Edmonds-Woodway.
The Bears enter the game as the Bi-District #5 seed after finishing second to Gig Harbor in the 4A Narrows League. They won two loser out district games over Thomas Jefferson and Puyallup in penalty kick shootouts. Oly is 13-3-2 overall this season, all three of their losses were in league play.
Edmonds-Woodway pulled off a convincing 4-1 win over Jackson in the district championship game and enter state at 14-2-2. The Warriors outscored their opponents 54-10 and didn’t allow more than two goals in any game this season. They were undefeated on their home field at Edmonds Stadium.
The winner of the game would host a home game against either Inglemoor or Kentridge in the quarterfinals.
High School Football Power Rankings: T-Birds and Beavers Advance
And then there were two. Tumwater and Tenino both rolled in their district crossover games and advanced to the 2A and 1A state tournaments. Both teams will host games in the opening round of state.
Tumwater will have the easier road with 5-5 Sehome coming to town on Saturday night, though Sehome did take out undefeated Lakewood to get to state.
Meanwhile, Tenino will have to face 8-2 King’s in Centralia. King’s only two blemishes were a 14-6 opening day loss to then 2A #1 Lynden and a loss to another high ranked 2A team, previously undefeated Lakewood.
Timberline couldn’t overcome injuries, Rochester struggled against a really good team and Capital fought valiantly but all were eliminated after just one postseason game.
——————————————–
Still alive
1. Tumwater T-Birds (10-0)
Last week: #1 (No change)
Previous game: Tumwater 42, Aberdeen 12
First round state playoffs: vs. Sehome (5-5) – Tumwater Stadium – Saturday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Not a surprise, Tumwater rolled. Aberdeen had just three days of rest after winning a three way playoff on Tuesday and only scored their 12 points after the T-Birds had taken a 42 point lead. They now face Sehome who are just 5-5 this season but are 4-1 over the last half of the year and just completed a major upset when they convincingly took out undefeated Lakewood, 35-13. The winner will take on either Orting or White River on the road.
2. Tenino Beavers (6-4)
Last week: #3 (+1)
Previous game: Tenino 41, White Salmon 7
First round state playoffs: vs. King’s (8-2) – Tiger Stadium, Centralia – Friday, 7:00 PM
Notes: Tenino only allowed a kick off return touchdown at the end of the first half to White Salmon and then put 27 points on the board in the second half to eliminate White Salmon. Zack Chamberlain rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns and Thomas Pier had over 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns and the Beavers suddenly look like an offensive juggernaut. They’ll need it this week when they take on King’s. The Shoreline school has just two losses, both close games to highly ranked 2A schools.
Eliminated from the playoffs in districts
3. Timberline Blazers (6-4)
Last week: #2 (-1)
Previous game: Meadowdale 28, Timberline 21
