Today (12/2): Preps Hoops Season Tips Off

BlazersAbes12a

Brandell Evans (5) and Donaven Dorsey (33)

This weekend saw a handful of high school hoops jamborees and the Capital/Olympia opener on Saturday, but today marks the start of the high school basketball season in earnest with five games on the docket here in town including a girls and boys doubleheader between Timberline and River Ridge starting at 6:00.

Girls basketball

Timberline @ River Ridge – River Ridge HS – 6:00 PM
Capital vs. Shelton – Capital HS – 7:00 PM
Olympia vs. WF West – Olympia HS – 7:00 PM

The River Ridge girls open their season with crosstown rival Timberline tonight. They return the core from their 5th place finish last season in Jazzlynn Brewster and Rebecca Stevenson and should contend again this year.

Olympia returns sophomore Jenna Randich and junior Sarah Snodgrass but they will have a tough test in their opener against WF West, the 2A second place finisher last season, who lost Jamika Parker to graduation but gained Washington State signee Nike McClure, who was relegated to their junior varsity squad last year after she transferred from Tenino.

Boys basketball

Black Hills vs. Klahowya – Black Hills HS – 7:00 PM
Timberline @ River Ridge – River Ridge HS – 8:00 PM

The Timberline boys game marks your first opportunity to take a look at University of Washington signee senior Donaven Dorsey and the Blazers as they look to improve on their 7th place finish at state last year. The Blazers have a senior led team with Dorsey, Tyler Gartner and Chase Ryan and it will be interesting to see the progress of junior point guard Brandell Evans, who had an excellent sophomore season.

Reclassification Numbers: Timberline to 4A, Capital to 3A, Rochester to 2A

UPDATE: The WIAA released new numbers on December 13th. See story here.

Enrollment data for the upcoming reclassification of Washington State high schools has been released by the WIAA and there are some interesting possible movements in the Olympia area.

The Daily News has done the heavy lifting and broke down the numbers by expected classification considering teams have the option to opt up to higher classifications.

What it shows for Thurston County schools is that Timberline will move up to 4A, Capital will move up to 3A and Rochester will likely move up to 2A. Rainier sits on the very edge of 1A and could easily drop down to 2B if a school smaller than them decides to opt up to 1A.

So we will likely see local schools in these classifications for the 2014-2016 seasons…

4A: Olympia, Timberline, Yelm
3A: Capital, North Thurston, Shelton
2A: Tumwater, Black Hills, River Ridge, Rochester
1A: Tenino, Rainier (maybe)
2B: Northwest Christian, Rainier (maybe)
1B: Pope John Paul II

More on this soon.

All-Narrows League Football Teams: Becker Named 4A Offensive MVP

3A Offensive MVP Derrick Becker celebrates after beating South Kitsap

Earlier this week the Narrows League released their all-league football teams and Olympia QB Derrick Becker was named the 4A Offensive MVP. Becker, a transfer from Capital this season, led the Bears to a 7-3 record but just barely missed out on the playoffs.

MVP honors went to Gig Harbor’s running back Sterling Brown in 4A and Lincoln running back Rayshawn Miller in 3A.

The Olympian has the full teams, but here are the local players honored, broken down by school…

High School Football Power Rankings: T-Birds and Beavers Advance

The T-Birds retain their top power ranking.

T-Birds one of two teams left

And then there were two. Tumwater and Tenino both rolled in their district crossover games and advanced to the 2A and 1A state tournaments. Both teams will host games in the opening round of state.

Tumwater will have the easier road with 5-5 Sehome coming to town on Saturday night, though Sehome did take out undefeated Lakewood to get to state.

Meanwhile, Tenino will have to face 8-2 King’s in Centralia. King’s only two blemishes were a 14-6 opening day loss to then 2A #1 Lynden and a loss to another high ranked 2A team, previously undefeated Lakewood.

Timberline couldn’t overcome injuries, Rochester struggled against a really good team and Capital fought valiantly but all were eliminated after just one postseason game.

——————————————–

Still alive

1. Tumwater T-Birds (10-0)
Last week: #1 (No change)
Previous game: Tumwater 42, Aberdeen 12
First round state playoffs: vs. Sehome (5-5) – Tumwater Stadium – Saturday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Not a surprise, Tumwater rolled. Aberdeen had just three days of rest after winning a three way playoff on Tuesday and only scored their 12 points after the T-Birds had taken a 42 point lead. They now face Sehome who are just 5-5 this season but are 4-1 over the last half of the year and just completed a major upset when they convincingly took out undefeated Lakewood, 35-13. The winner will take on either Orting or White River on the road.

2.
Tenino Beavers (6-4)
Last week: #3 (+1)
Previous game: Tenino 41, White Salmon 7
First round state playoffs: vs. King’s (8-2) – Tiger Stadium, Centralia – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Tenino only allowed a kick off return touchdown at the end of the first half to White Salmon and then put 27 points on the board in the second half to eliminate White Salmon. Zack Chamberlain rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns and Thomas Pier had over 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns and the Beavers suddenly look like an offensive juggernaut. They’ll need it this week when they take on King’s. The Shoreline school has just two losses, both close games to highly ranked 2A schools.

Eliminated from the playoffs in districts

3. Timberline Blazers (6-4)
Last week: #2 (-1)
Previous game: Meadowdale 28, Timberline 21

4.
Capital Cougars (4-6)
Last week: #4 (No change)
Previous game: Mark Morris 13, Capital 10

5.
Rochester Warriors (6-4)
Last week: #5 (No change)
Previous game: Woodland 47, Rochester 21

Missed the playoffs

6. Olympia Bears (7-3)
