KMAS and OlySports.com Announce Expanded High School Football Coverage

KMASPRESS RELEASE: KMAS to broadcast five Shelton games, the Spaghetti Bowl and Pioneer Bowl

SHELTON, Wash. – Newsradio 1030 AM KMAS, in conjunction with OlySports.com, will expand their high school football coverage for the 2014 season to include Shelton High School football and four prime matchups featuring Thurston County powerhouses. KMAS will be the only local radio station providing over-the-air broadcasts of Olympia area games this season.

“Not many people know it, but KMAS Radio broadcast the South Sound Game of the Week as far back as 27 years ago, with John Willis doing the play by play,” said Dale Hubbard, President and General Manager of Olympic Broadcast and Media. “We are excited about our recent programming changes, to all news & information for the South Sound, and are looking forward to bringing some of the best high school matchups in the area to the fans!”

KMAS will broadcast five Shelton High School football games beginning with the Mason County Cup against North Mason on September 5 and continuing with 3A Narrows League games against Foss (September 19), Wilson (October 3), North Thurston (October 17) and Capital (October 31).

The Highclimbers return a talented group of seniors including All-Narrows first team linebacker Brian Nault and honorable mention running back Jake Henry and will look to improve on their 2-8 record in the 2013 season.

The OlySports.com Game of the Week on KMAS will debut on September 12 with the annual Spaghetti Bowl featuring Olympia and Capital at Ingersoll Stadium. KMAS will carry the Timberline at Olympia game on September 26 and the Pioneer Bowl between Tumwater and Black Hills on October 24. The October 10 game is still to be determined.

The KMAS football broadcast team of Brandon Sparks and John McGlamery return to the booth for their third season.

“John and I are excited for the opportunity to continue to call Highclimbers football games,” said Sparks, who is also runs the local sports website OlySports.com. “And we can’t wait to bring some of the best games between South Sound teams back to the airwaves in the Olympia area.”

In total, KMAS will broadcast five Shelton games and feature Capital and Olympia twice and Tumwater, Timberline, North Thurston and Black Hills once with one week of games yet to be determined.

All games can be heard live on 1030 AM and 104.1 FM and can be streamed worldwide on kmas.com or the TuneIn Radio app on a smartphone.

The high school sports season wrapped up on Saturday so let’s take a look at how everybody fared this season.

There was one team state titles this year, brought home by the Northwest Christian girls cross country team, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering they’ve won eight straight 2B titles.  A few teams took second place in state: Capital volleyball and boys soccer, Timberline girls bowling, Tumwater football and girls track and field.

For individuals, Brooke Feldmeier led the way with three state titles. The Ole Miss bound Tumwater senior won 2A titles in the 100 meter hurdles, the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash.

Four individuals won multiple state titles. Capital junior Ryan Chase won two 2A titles for long jump and triple jump, Northwest Christian senior Karen Bulger took 2B titles in javelin and shot put, River Ridge junior Dejuan Frye won the 400 meter dash and was part of the first place 4×100 meter relay team and Tumwater sophomore Peyton Russell took home titles in long jump and triple jump.

And area wrestlers didn’t fare too bad. Jake Grantham took home the 3A 220 pound weight class title for North Thurston, Rochester’s Lucas Eastman won a 1A title in the 152 pound class, Yelm’s Darren Harris won the 4A 120 pound class title and Tumwater’s Megan Johnson won the 155 pound girls title.

T-Birds (23-5 overall), Seahawks (20-6 overall)

After a 10-1 loss to Lake Washington on Friday to end their championship hopes, Tumwater scored two runs in the first inning and added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh and claimed the third place trophy with a 5-1 win over Anacortes at Yakima County Stadium.

Elijah Hill got the win on the mound for the T-Birds, who finished the season at 23-5 overall.


High school softball
2A State Consolation Round

Seahawks (20-9 overall), T-Birds (20-6 overall)

An Anacortes six run sixth inning proved fatal for Tumwater as they fell 7-4 to the Seahawks in the consolation round of the 2A state tournament in Selah. The T-Birds finished their season at 20-6 overall.


Semi-pro football

Thurston County Mayhem 20, Snohomish County Thunder 7
Mayhem (1-1 WWFA)

Anthony Parks rushed for two touchdowns and Webster Fepuleai scored a defensive touchdown to lead the Thurston County Mayhem to their first win in team history, 20-7 over the Snohomish County Thunder at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Cavaliers: Mike Beasley – 2 passing TDs, 2 rushing TDs

Washington Cavaliers quarterback Mike Beasley found wide receiver Ryan Tomsic for a 40 yard touchdown strike and tight end Jordan Randall for a 60 yard TD in the second quarter to lead the Washington Cavaliers to a 28-6 romp over the first year Cowlitz County Riverhawks at Black Hills High School. Beasley also rushed for a pair of touchdowns including a 45 yard scamper in the third quarter.

The inaugural season of the Evergreen Premier League is underway and we here at Oly Sports are following along with great interest as we continue to make a push for Oly Town FC to join the league in 2015. Tonight, the closest EPLWA team to our unfortunately unrepresented city, South Sound FC, makes their home debut tonight at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood at 7:00 PM against Wenatchee United.

The Shock are trying to pack Harry Lang Stadium, which is just a few exits up I-5, so they are offering free admission to youth dressed in uniform and admission for anybody dressed in South Sound FC gear or US Soccer American Outlaws gear will be donation based.

The Shock are 2-0 in league play with a 2-1 win over Yakima United last week and a 2-0 win over WestSound in week one.

The nomadic Washington Cavaliers semi-pro football team have settled down in Tumwater for this season and will play their first game today against the Cowlitz County Blackhawks at Black Hills High School at 1:00 PM. Tickets for the preseason “Back in Black” game are $5 for adults and kids under 12 get in free.

In/Out: Semi-Pro Football, Yarrington and Dorsey

MayhemIN: The Thurston County Mayhem semi-pro football team will take residence in Lacey for four or five games this season. Their first game is scheduled for May 17th at 6:00 PM at their home field at South Sound Stadium against the Northwest Cardinals.

The team will be coached by owner and founder James King, who was named the Western Washington Football Alliance coach of the year after guiding the Washington Cavaliers to the WWFA championship in 2013. King and his coaching staff will be holding a combine for prospective players on Saturday, February 8th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM with registration beginning at noon.

IN: Speaking of semi-pro football and the WWFA, the aforementioned Washington Cavaliers will play their entire home schedule at Tumwater High School this season. The nomadic team has been based in the Centralia area for the last couple of years and has played all over Southwest Washington including previous stints at Tumwater Stadium and South Sound Stadium.

The Cavaliers named Chris Potts to replace King as their new head coach and will get the jump on the Mayhem with their own combine on Saturday, January 25th from noon to 2:oo PM at Tumwater Stadium.

They will kick off their 2014 home season on June 7th against the Snohomish County Vikings and will face the Mayhem on July 12th.

OUT: Last week, The Olympian reported that Black Hills head football coach Dominic Yarrington would not have his contract renewed and is out after just one season at the helm of the Wolves.

Yarrington has been on paid leave from his teaching position at Black Hills since December while an “incident” is investigated. The Eli Sports Network reports that the incident was an “unfortunate relationship” with a parent of a player involving “inappropriate activity on school grounds between adults”.


OUT: Timberline senior and University of Washington basketball signee Donaven Dorsey broke his ankle on Friday night in a 65-38 loss at Lincoln and might be out for the season, reports The Olympian. Dorsey was supposed to see a orthopedic specialist on Monday to determine if surgery would be needed but Meg Wochnick tweeted that he was unable to do so, likely because Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Black Hills head football coach Dominic Yarrington has been placed on paid leave until Wednesday while an investigation takes place, reports The Olympian. The Tumwater School District will not release what the subject matter of the investigation is, but says that it does not rise to the level of the police being involved. – The Olympian

Timberline alum Jonathan Stewart may miss the rest of the season with a tear in his MCL. Stewart was injured early in the Carolina Panther’s loss to New Orleans on Sunday night. The unfortunately injury-prone back missed the first seven games of the season after offseason ankle surgery. – CBS Sports

The Saint Martin’s women’s basketball team was named the GNAC Team of the Week after they opened up conference play by going 2-0 with wins over Central Washington and #18 Northwest Nazarene. – SMUSaints.com

Jayden Croft scored two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter (including the fantastic effort seen above) to cut the Tumwater deficit to just seven points with 4:26 to go. But Lynden wrestled an onside kick attempt away from a pile of T-Birds on the ensuing kick off and finished off the drive with a 30 yard field goal with 1:34 left to play and held on to a 38-28 win in the WIAA 2A state title game at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday afternoon.

The big day for Tumwater is here. Can they finish off this undefeated season and avenge last year’s state title loss these same Lynden Lions? Well, not quite the same.
