4A state tournament quarterfinalsBracket
Olympia vs. Inglemoor – Ingersoll Stadium – 7:00 PM

Olympia pulled off a minor shocker (at least to me) when they dropped Edmonds-Woodway at Edmonds Stadium on Tuesday. They now get to host their quarterfinal match-up with Inglemoor at 7:00 PM.

Inglemoor pulled off a 1-0 win over Kentridge and improved to 12-2-3 this season. The Vikings have scored just 35 goals this season but have allowed just seven goals. They feature Oregon commit Abby Morrow at Midfield and Forward.

The winner of tonight’s game will move into the semis and will face either Skyline or Issaquah at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner at 8:00 PM next Friday.

1A State Tournament First RoundBracket
Tenino vs. King’s – Tiger Stadium, Centralia – 7:00 PM

Tenino has been rolling winners of four straight games and six of their last seven after an 0-3 start. They knocked off White Salmon convincingly, 41-7, last week and now turn their sights on King’s.

The private school in Shoreline plays in the mixed 1A/2A Cascade Conference and played seven 2A schools this season including close losses to Lynden and Lakewood, their only two losses of the season. They get to tune up all season long against 2A teams and then drop down to battle 1A schools once the postseason rolls around. In the crossover game, they easily beat Eatonville 30-12.

ScoreCzar is picking King’s to win 27-10. You can hear a webcast of the game on the KELA website.

Seattle Pacific 3, Saint Martin’s 1 (18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20) – Recap

Julia Wabinga racked up a career high 18 kills for Saint Martin’s but Seattle Pacific rallied to win three straight sets after dropping the first to knock off the Saints in four sets. Cymbree Decosta had 39 assists and 15 digs and Kristin Okamura added five digs in their last game at Marcus Pavilion.

The Saints fell to 7-20 overall and 3-12 the GNAC. They have one more “home” game on Saturday night when they get bumped out of their own gym for the 4A and 3A volleyball state tournaments and over to Capital High School to face Montana State-Billings at 7:00 PM.

Saint Martin’s vs. Seattle Pacific – Marcus Pavilion – 7:00 PM

Despite another “home” game on Saturday night, tonight is the last game of the season at Marcus Pavilion for the Saint Martin’s volleyball team.

With the high school state tournament taking over the Pavilion this weekend, the Saints will be sent across town to Capital High School on Saturday so tonight is Senior Night for two Saints, Kristin Okamura and Cymbree Decosta.

The Saints are 7-19 this season and a win tonight would give them their most wins since 1999.

2A State Tournament First Round
Sumner 6, Black Hills 0

Black Hills drew the short end of the stick in the first round of the 2A state tournament when they traveled to Sumner to take on the defending state champion Spartans, the number #2 seed out of District 3 with a 14-2-1 record and had outscored their opponents 94-5.

Sumner scored 90 seconds in and poured it on all game long to end the Wolves season, 6-0. The Wolves finished the season at 16-3-1.

According to Tim Martinez of The Columbian, with losses by Ridgefield, Black Hills and Hockinson yesterday and today, District 4 teams are now just 1-23 in the first round of the state tournament since 2006.

Black Hills vs. Sumner – Sunset Chev Stadium – 7:00 PM

It’s a first round battle that kind of looks like a state title game when Black Hills travels to Sumner for a 7:00 PM first kick at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Both teams are coming off of district championship game losses and are the #2 seeds out of District 4 and District 3. Sumner lost 1-0 to Fife and Black Hills fell to Ridgefield 1-0 on Halloween. It was only the second loss of the season for both teams. Sumner has outscored their opponents 94-5 this year while Black Hills has a 76-15 edge in their 19 games.

Tumwater senior Justin Graham was surprised by an assembly and ESPN camera crews on Tuesday morning when he was named a finalist for the High School Heisman Trophy. Graham plays basketball, baseball, has a 4.0 GPA and gives his time in many ways to the community. Read more from Meg Wochnick and The Olympian here.

I don’t cover high school cross country or other individual sports regularly. It’s a decision that had to be made based on time and information considerations. But, I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mention that the Northwest Christian girls cross country team won their eighth straight 2B state championship this week. Ben Zimmerman, freelancing for the The Olympian, has the story.

4A State Tournament First Round
Olympia @ Edmonds-Woodway – Edmonds Stadium – 7:00 PM

Olympia takes to the road for the first round game of the state tournament and will have to take on a tough opponent in District 1 champion Edmonds-Woodway.

The Bears enter the game as the Bi-District #5 seed after finishing second to Gig Harbor in the 4A Narrows League. They won two loser out district games over Thomas Jefferson and Puyallup in penalty kick shootouts. Oly is 13-3-2 overall this season, all three of their losses were in league play.

Edmonds-Woodway pulled off a convincing 4-1 win over Jackson in the district championship game and enter state at 14-2-2. The Warriors outscored their opponents 54-10 and didn’t allow more than two goals in any game this season. They were undefeated on their home field at Edmonds Stadium.

The winner of the game would host a home game against either Inglemoor or Kentridge in the quarterfinals.
