Saint Martin’s 4, Holy Names 0 – Recap

Rayna Murphy scored from ten yards out in the ninth minute of the game and Evergreen held on for the next 80+ minutes to knock off George Fox 1-0 in Newberg, Oregon. The Geoducks outshot the Bruins 10-4 and George Fox managed just one shot on goal giving Kaitlin MacKenzie an uneventful shutout in goal.

Nikki Roberts scored her first career goal in the 38th minute and then freshman Kelli Bannerman added an insurance hat trick in Saint Martin’s 4-0 win over Holy Names in San Francisco. Bannerman is just the second Saints women’s soccer player to record a hat trick. Goalkeepers Gina Cardenas and Hannah Barlow each made a save in the shutout.

Today (9/11): Clippers host #11 Pirates; Wolves, Hawks volleyball

Men’s soccer

SPSCC vs. Peninsula – The RAC – 4:00 PM

The 2-0 South Puget Sound men’s soccer team makes their home debut today at The RAC against Peninsula. The Clippers got two shutouts at the NWAACC Friendlies by goalkeeper Cody Wilkes, a freshman from Shelton and a pair of goals from another Shelton alum, freshman Alex Nunez. Taylor Weatherly, Mike Rancipher and Jair Cisneros all also got on the board in SPSCC’s first two games.

Peninsula comes into the game ranked #11 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches of America Association at 5-0-1 and is lead by Alex Martinez, a 6-2 sophomore who already has eight goals and three assists this season and Ashkanov Apollon, a 6-0 freshman that has six goals and four assists in the early going.

After breaking a two year losing streak on the road, the Angela Spoja led Evergreen volleyball team makes their official home debut tonight in a Cascade Conference game against Concordia. The Geoducks were picked to finish last in the CCC but look to be much improved. Concordia is 4-2 this season and were picked to finish fourth in the conference.

The Saint Martin’s volleyball season kicked off with a 3-1 win over the Academy of Art at the Otter Classic at Cal State-Monterey Bay. Kristyn Ross racked up 10 kills and 12 digs, Kyra Davidson led the Saints with 16 kills, Halee Hernandez had 20 digs and Candice Pedroza added 16 assists. It is only the second opening match win for the Saints in the past six years.

The Saints play once more today, taking on Dominican University of California at 3:00 PM.

Timberline alum Jonathan Stewart was placed on the Physically Unable to Play list yesterday by the Carolina Panthers. He will miss at least the first six weeks of the season. He won’t be eligible to play until the Panthers’ sixth game against St. Louis on October 20th. Stewart signed a $37.8 million extension last August but has only played in nine games since. – Link

Capital has hired Tenino baseball head coach Jesse Elam as their new head coach and Kelsey Haupert as the new softball head coach for the Cougars. Elam took the Beavers to four state playoffs in his six years at Tenino and Haupert is a Black Hills grad that played at Purdue. – Link
