Today (5/1): Bears, Blazers softball needs wins, miracles; Rams baseball opens Narrows tourney

Olympia vs. Yelm – Stevens Field – 4:00 PM
Timberline vs. Shelton – Timberline HS – 4:00 PM

Olympia is tied with South Kitsap in first place of the 4A Narrows League at 9-2 but both of the Bears’ league losses came to the Wolves. To win the Narrows regular season title, they have to win today against 5-6 Yelm and hope that winless Stadium can pull off a major upset on Friday. The Bears won a close game in Yelm on April 15th, 4-2 while South Kitsap beat Stadium 29-0 early in the season.

On the 3A side of the Narrows, Timberline faces the same situation as Olympia. They currently sit at 9-2 in league tied with North Thurston but the Rams swept the season series and hold the tiebreaker. For the Blazers to win the regular season title, they need to beat 7-4 Shelton at home and hope that 1-9 Mount Tahoma can come up with some serious magic and knock off the Rams in Tacoma. The Blazers barely took down the Highclimbers in Shelton in their last meeting, scoring five runs in the final two innings to pull out the win. Meanwhile, North Thurston beat Mount Tahoma 17-7 in their first meeting.

Game two of the Narrows League tournament pits #2 North Thurston against #3 Shelton. The Rams dominated the season series with 6-1 and 7-0 wins that started a five game losing streak for the Highclimbers. After starting 7-0 in league play, Shelton dropped both games to the Rams, fell to Wilson in Tacoma and then dropped two to Timberline to close out the regular season. They did pick up a non-league win over Klahowya on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Rams dropped two to Timberline and then had an easier road outscoring lowly Mount Tahoma 39-0 in two games. They also picked up two non-league wins over Capital at Cheney Stadium and River Ridge.

Leticia Farias also drove in a pair of runs as the Bears put up 10 runs in the first two innings. Oly moved to 9-2 in the 4A Narrows to keep pace with South Kitsap, who were 4-2 winners over Gig Harbor and hold the tiebreaker over the Bears. Oly needs a win over Yelm on Wednesday and hope last place Stadium can pull off a massive upset of South Kitsap on Friday to win the regular season title.

Today (4/28): Saints look to clinch outright GNAC title and honor four seniors

2013SoftballSeniors
The Saint Martin’s softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday capped off by a Sam Munger single that scored Megan Miller to claim at least a share of the GNAC regular season title in dramatic fashion.

Today, the Saints can claim the regular season title outright and head to the GNAC tournament in Billings as the #1 seed with at least one win in their doubleheader against Central Washington beginning at the Saint Martin’s softball field.

The Saints will honor four senior that have been a huge part of the Saint Martin’s astounding turnaround over the last two seasons, Joslyn Eugenio, Madi Davis, Aubree Pocklington and Taylor Bakos.

Eugenio has been one of the top hitters for the Saints in all four of her seasons in Lacey. She hit .392 her freshman year, .391 as a sophomore, cooled off to .351 last season and is hitting .403 with four home runs this season. She led the Saints in runs batted in all four seasons with the Saints racking up 139 and counting for her career.

Bakos is in her second season as a Saint after transferring from Columbia Basin CC and has teamed with Sam Munger to form a formidable 1-2 punch on the mound. Last season, Bakos went 9-5 with a 2.32 ERA and is 13-7 with a 2.59 ERA this season.

Madi Davis and Aubree Pocklington are each transfers that have spent two seasons with the Saints. Davis is having a breakout year hitting .313 this year and has started all 47 games. Pocklington has seen the majority of the action behind the plate and is hitting .278 with four home runs this season.

First pitch today is schedule for noon, weather permitting.

PHOTO GALLERY: North Thurston claims first place with contentious 7-6 win over Wilson

(Click on any image to see a larger size)

Wilson took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but North Thurston pushed across two runs in the final frame to knock off Wilson, 7-6, to claim first place in the 3A Narrows League.

After North Thurston tied the score at six all in the seventh, Saralyn Campbell singled to right field. The throw home appeared to beat North Thurston’s Dejah Hickman by a few steps but the ump called her safe and set off a wild celebration on the home side and a furious argument by the visitors.

Once the dust settled, North Thurston found themselves on top of the league standings at 7-1, a half game ahead of Timberline (6-1) and a full game ahead of Wilson, who fell to 6-2 with the loss.
