A double-squeeze laid down by Blake Nystrom in the third inning scored Chris Roy and Matt Mercer and that was all Timberline would need in claiming the 3A Narrows League title with a 2-0 win over North Thurston on the Rams’ home field.
Cobi Beal, Zach Owens and Tony Ortiz combined to pitch a two hit shutout for the Blazers, who are now 10-0 in league play and 15-2 overall and have outscored their opponents 101-6 in league play. They face Shelton for two games to finish out the regular season and will then be the #1 seed in the Narrows League tournament beginning next week at The RAC.
Riley Storedahl picked up the hard luck loss going 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and the Rams fell to 8-2 in league and 11-5 overall. They next face Mount Tahoma twice to close out the regular season and will likely go into the tournament as the #2 seed.
PHOTO GALLERY: Rams remain undefeated in league with 6-1 win over Shelton
Ryan Mets allowed just one run over six innings in North Thurston’s 6-1 victory over Shelton in a battle of 3A Narrows League undefeated teams. Hayden Maliska went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run batted in and a run scored and Matt Zeutenhorst drove in a pair of runs for the Rams off of the Washington State bound senior Jared Welander.
The win moves North Thurston to 7-0 in Narrows play. In those seven games, the Rams have outscored their opponents 79-4 and have given up just 10 hits. Shelton drops to 7-1. The two teams meet again on Wednesday in Shelton.

It took 30 minutes, but the Capital boys soccer team finally broke through on a Benedict Thurnher goal and held on for a 1-0 win over Tumwater at Tumwater Stadium. The win moved the Cougars to 5-2 in the 2A Evergreen Conference while the T-Birds fell to 3-3.

Budd Bay thoroughly dominated the Seattle Quake winning 60-5 (unconfirmed) on Saturday afternoon at Rainier Vista. Surprisingly, the weather held out until just minutes after the final whistle when it started pouring. Sadly, no extremely muddy pictures. But thankfully, I stayed mighty dry.

PHOTO GALLERY: Northwest Fight Challenge XVI
Northwest Fight Challenge XVI featured 13 bouts in front of a near capacity crowd last night at South Sound Sports Center. New laws enacted by the State of Washington tripped some fighters up and a couple of regulated MMA bouts had to be changed to unregulated Muay Thai Kickboxing bouts because the fighters were not licensed through the state to fight MMA, but those fights turned out to be some of the more brutal, thrilling bouts of the night.
Here are the results from Northwest Fight Challenge XVI…
1. David Gines defeated Rocky Olsen – First round tapout
2. Marcus Mendoza defeated Brian Spears
3. Talon Hammons defeated Ryan Edwards
4. Luis Gomez faced Hector Lopez – I Missed the decision of this bout
5. Steve Pederson defeated Josh Cristelli
6. Josh Bean defeated Bryan Reiser
7. Thomas Pierce defeated Curtis Iglesias
8. Nick Coughran defeated Sefo Nansen
9. Julien Martin defeated Armondo Best
10. Joe Briggs defeated Jason Swan
11. Marquis Bryant defeated Omar Petty – TKO after 16 seconds
12. J.D. Cullens defeated Matt Juarez
13. Nick Ryan defeated Woo Johnson – TKO after the first round
Thank you to Dani Shank Johnson and the Academy of Brian Johnson for access and for putting on a well organized (despite a couple of snafus including the fan that collapsed, it looked bad but it sounds like he just fainted) and exciting event.

Boys basketball
3A West Central/SW Bi-District championship
Lincoln 52, Timberline 51
Tied at 51 at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Colorado bound Tre’Shaun Fletcher hit one of two free throws to give Lincoln a 52-51 lead. Timberline took the rebound on the missed free throw, brought the ball over half court and called timeout with 9.2 seconds. Down by one in this back and forth battle, the Blazers would have the last opportunity to win the district title…
Sophomore point guard Brandel Evans had Donaven Dorsey open on a back cut but Evans lost the handle, had to track the ball down and had the last second desperation shot blocked by Fletcher and the Abes would hold on to claim the West Central/Southwest Bi-District championship and the #1 seed into the regionals.
Dorsey scored a game high 25 points while Evans added 12 for the Blazers, who have won eight of their last ten games including a loser out game in the opening round of the districts and two upsets over Lakes and Foss to get to the final game. Timberline will claim the #2 seed and will face Mercer Island on Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School. Tip is set for 4:00 PM.
Fletcher scored 21 points for the Abes and Cal commit Ahmaad Rorie added 13. The Abes will play Columbia River on Saturday, also at Mount Tahoma.

PHOTO GALLERY: South Sound Shock vs. WSA Rapids
In a wild back and forth game, the South Sound Shock and WSA Rapids finished tied at seven all after regulation and went to penalty kicks at Gig Harbor Athletic Club on Saturday night. Each team had a goal disallowed during the penalty kick session but Joey Gjertsen’s blast in the third and final round gave the Shock a 9-8 win that moves them into the PASL Northwest Finals against the Kitsap Pumas on Sunday night.
