Liz Mills scored 18 points and Krista Stabler added 16 in Saint Martin’s 66-58 exhibition win over Carroll College on Thursday night at Marcus Pavilion.

A three pointer by Mike Robinson with 10:54 left in the first half gave Carroll their largest lead of the game at 19-13. But Saint Martin’s battled back and the two teams took a tie into the locker room at 33.

SMU struck first in the second half on a layup by Krista Stabler but Katie Estey’s three a minute later gave Carroll the lead at 36-35, the last lead that Caroll would hold. They would tie it up at 41 but a 6-0 run capped off by Brooke Paulson’s jumper with 11:04 left put Saint Martin’s up for good. Mills twice gave SMU a nine point lead, once at the 4:10 mark and again with 1:14 left to play.

Elin Johansson scored 11 points and pulled down seven boards in her debut at Marcus Pavilion. Mills added seven rebounds to her game high 18 points and Stabler led the way with six assists.

Women’s Basketball
Saint Martin’s @ Evergreen – CRC Gymnasium – 5:00 PM

Men’s Basketball
Saint Martin’s @ Evergreen – CRC Gymnasium – 7:30 PM

Oh yeah, the college hoops season tips off when Saint Martin’s and Evergreen play their annual games. Tonight, the games are out at Evergreen beginning with the women at 5:00 PM and continuing at 7:30 with the men.

Both of Evergreen’s teams are coached by new head coaches. The women are led by former Geoducks assistant coach Jennifer Schooler and her challenge is to keep her eight players fresh throughout the game. Injuries and ineligible players has left them shorthanded but still talented with forward Brittany Gray leading their returnees.

Meanwhile, the men are now coached by Tim Malroy, an Olympia native and previously the head coach at Green River Community College. The Geoducks have a couple of solid returnees in Frankie Johnson and Jordan Dam but will rely on a bevy of transfers to round out the roster and hopefully improve on three straight awful years in the CCC.

Meanwhile, in Lacey, the Saints women look to make the playoffs once again and return a solid squad led by senior Angela Gelhar. All-GNAC forward Chelsea Haskey graduated but the emergence of Megan Wiedeman last season tempers that loss and a lot will be expected of the junior forward this season.

On the men’s side, Michael Ostlund enters his second season as head coach and not much is expected out of his squad, at least in the pre-season GNAC poll where they finished tied for 9th. The Saints will likely play various small lineups again with returning guards Riley Carel, Ryan Rogers, Tyler Copp, Isaac Bianchini and Will Bond playing together in various combinations.

AP Washington State Prep Football Poll – How They Fared in Week 9

The regular season wraps up this weekend and so far there hasn’t been much in the way of shakeups heading into the playoffs. In 3A, #8 Shadle Park fell to Mt. Spokane and in 2A, #9 Liberty dropped one to Mount Si. Really, those were the only upsets this week amongst ranked teams.
