Today (5/23): Cougs Face Kingston in State Semis; District Softball

Boys soccer
2A State Tournament Semifinals
Capital vs. Kingston – North Kitsap Stadium, Poulsbo – 7:00 PM

Capital, who were overtime winners in the first round, now take on a Kingston team that knocked off Orting with a 4-3 shootout win. It’s a match-up of two 2-loss teams. The Cougars, the #5 team in the state according to Scoreczar, moved to 19-2 with their 1-0 win over Anacortes and have now outscored their opponents 73-10. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers, #3 ranked by Scoreczar, have put up 77 goals while allowing just eight en route to 18 wins.

The winner will face the winner of the Sedro Wooley/Archbishop Murphy game in the state semifinals on May 30th at Sunset Chevy Stadium in Sumner.


High school softball – Weather permitting

4A District 3/4 Tournament Postponed until Saturday
Olympia vs. Thomas Jefferson – Kent Service Ballfields – 1:00 PM

The Bears open district play against a Thomas Jefferson team that is 11-10 overall and has lost three straight games. The winner will face either Battle Ground or Puyallup in the quarterfinals at 5:00 PM while the loser faces the loser of that game in a loser-out game also at 5:00.


3A District 3/4 Tournament
Postponed until Saturday
North Thurston vs. Peninsula – Sprinker Recreation Center, Spanaway – Noon
Timberline vs. Mountain View/Auburn Mountainview – Sprinker, Spanaway – 4:00 PM

The Rams face a 9-10 Peninsula team at noon. The winner faces Enumclaw in the next round while the loser will face either Timberline, Mountain View or Auburn Mountainview in a loser-out game at 6:00 PM

The Blazers get a first round bye and will face the winner of Mountain View/Auburn Mountainview. If they win, they qualify for state and will next play on Saturday. If they lose, they fall into a loser-out game against either North Thurston or Peninsula at 6:00.


2A District 4 Tournament

Loser-out: Tumwater vs. Centralia – Fort Borst Park, Centralia – 4:00 PM
Championship: Capital vs. WF West – Fort Borst Park, Centralia – 6:00 PM

Tumwater, the clear second place team from the 2A EvCo, now needs two wins to make it to state. They take on Centralia in a loser-out game at 4:00 and then will face the winner of the RA Long/Ridgefield game in a winner-to-state/loser-out game at 6:00.

Can Capital continue to knock off the heavy hitters? They have already qualified for state but can make a bold statement with a win in the District 4 championship game at 6:00 PM.

2A State Tournament First Round

Capital 1, Anacortes 0 (OT)
Cougars (19-2 overall), Seahawks (14-4-2 overall)

Aidan Klemmer’s golden goal gave Capital the 1-0 overtime win over Anacortes at Oak Harbor High School in the first round of the 2A state tournament.  The Cougars are now 19-2 overall and advance to play Kingston in the quarterfinals later this week at a time and place to be determined.

High School Soccer and Baseball Brackets

It’s time for some regional baseball and soccer action. Capital soccer and the Timberline, North Thurston and Tumwater baseball teams remain alive and if we expand to the surrounding communities we find Shelton, Tenino and Rochester still playing.

Here are the brackets and matchups for soccer and baseball. Soccer kicks off on Tuesday while baseball has to wait until Saturday to get underway.

Olympia advanced to play another loser-out game on Wednesday at 4:00 PM at Art Wright Field in Kent against Kentridge.

3A District 3/4 tournament – Loser-out

North Thurston 6, Enumclaw 4
 Rams (15-5 overall), Hornets (12-9 overall)

North Thurston survived and will head to Propstra Stadium in Vancouver to face Columbia River on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.

2A District 4 tournament

Tumwater 3, Capital 2 (11 innings)
 T-Birds (18-3 overall), Cougars (6-15 overall)

It took 11 innings but Tumwater opened the district tournament with a 3-2 win over Capital. They face WF West on Wednesday in Chehalis at 4:00 PM.

Black Hills 5, Hockinson 4
 Wolves (9-12 overall), Hawks (13-5 overall)

Black Hills picked up a big road win with their 5-4 upset of Hockinson. The Wolves next face Centralia at WF West High School in game two of a districts doubleheader in Chehalis.

2B District 4 tournament – Loser-out

Toutle Lake 6, Northwest Christian 5
Northwest Christian (12-7 overall)

Toutle Lake’s Radley Risner singled in the winning run and Northwest Christian’s season came to an end with a 6-5 road loss.

Hockinson 3, Capital 2 (OT)
 Cougars (16-2 overall)

Hockinson’s Mitchell Pinney tied the game in stoppage time of the second half and then scored the golden goal in overtime to lead Hockinson past Capital, 3-2. The Cougars lost just their second game of the season and now face a loser-out game on Thursday against WF West.

Black Hills’ season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Centralia.

Today (5/10): South Sound FC Kicks Off Home Schedule in Lakewood

South Sound FC vs. Wenatchee United – Harry Lang Stadium, Lakewood – 7:00 PM

The inaugural season of the Evergreen Premier League is underway and we here at Oly Sports are following along with great interest as we continue to make a push for Oly Town FC to join the league in 2015. Tonight, the closest EPLWA team to our unfortunately unrepresented city, South Sound FC, makes their home debut tonight at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood at 7:00 PM against Wenatchee United.

The Shock are trying to pack Harry Lang Stadium, which is just a few exits up I-5, so they are offering free admission to youth dressed in uniform and admission for anybody dressed in South Sound FC gear or US Soccer American Outlaws gear will be donation based.

The Shock are 2-0 in league play with a 2-1 win over Yakima United last week and a 2-0 win over WestSound in week one.


Semi-pro football

Washington Cavaliers vs. Cowlitz County Blackhawks – Black Hills HS – 1:00 PM

The nomadic Washington Cavaliers semi-pro football team have settled down in Tumwater for this season and will play their first game today against the Cowlitz County Blackhawks at Black Hills High School at 1:00 PM. Tickets for the preseason “Back in Black” game are $5 for adults and kids under 12 get in free.

The Saint Martin’s baseball team’s season came to an end on Friday afternoon after their 2-0 loss to Central Washington dropped them to 0-2 at the GNAC Championships. Earlier in day, the Saints fell 4-2 to the host Western Oregon.

Both starting pitchers for the Saints pitched well. Zach Carter gave up four earned runs on four hits over eight innings in game one against the Wolves and Josh Moss allowed just two unearned runs over eight innings in game two.

The Saints finished their season at 18-30 overall.

Narrows League Tournament championship game

Timberline 8, North Thurston 1
Blazers (#2 seed), Rams (#1 seed)

Timberline scored two runs in the first, three runs in the second and three more runs in the third to build an 8-0 lead and Brandon Olson threw a two hitter to lead the Blazers to an 8-1 win over North Thurston in the 3A Narrows League championship game. With the win, the Blazers get the #1 seed to districts and earn a first round bye. They next play on Wednesday at 7:00 PM in Tacoma. The Rams will face a loser-out game on Tuesday at 7:00 at Heidelberg Park in Tacoma.

District 4 Playoffs

Capital 5, Black Hills 2
Goals: CAP – El-Sokkary (2), O’Neill (2), Castillo-Lopez  BH – Duff, Cutler

Nigel El-Sokkary and Kellan O’Neill each scored two goals and Capital opened up districts with a 5-2 win over Black Hills at Ingersoll Stadium. The Cougars will face the winner of Saturday’s Centralia/Hockinson game on Tuesday night while the Wolves will get the loser of that game.

The Olympia Reign made their debut in Bellingham but it was an Evergreen grad and a Saint Martin’s grad that starred for the Slam in their 139-106 win. Ex-Greener Nick Moore scored 31 points and Saints great Blake Poole scored 21 and pulled down 18 boards in the win.

2013-2014 Geoduck Kyle Calhoun led the Reign with 29 points and Virgil Matthews added 23 in the loss.

The two teams were set to meet in Olympia on Saturday but the game has been cancelled because of some kind of problem at the Sound Sound Sports Center in Tumwater.

Olympia came back from 5-2 and 6-5 deficits to take the game to extra innings but the #5 seed Central Kitsap knocked off the #3 seed Bears 7-6 in eight innings. Both teams move on to districts with the Cougars taking the #3 spot and the Bears taking the #4.

Olympia and Gig Harbor took a 1-1 tie into the fifth inning but the Tides scored the last four runs over the next two innings to take a 5-1 win in the 4A Narrows League Tournament at The RAC. Despite the loss, the Bears are already in districts and will play for the third seed tomorrow at 4:00 PM at The RAC against Central Kitsap.

Timberline jumped out to a three run lead in the first inning and never looked back in a 9-2 win over Wilson in the 3A Narrows League Tournament at The RAC. The Blazers move on to the league championship game and earn a rematch with North Thurston at 6:30 PM at The RAC.
