North Thurston grad Joash Brodin is once again red hot for the independent Long Island Ducks. He is 10-for-23 with six runs scored and two RBIs in August. He leads the league in runs scored (76), hits (126), is third in batting average (.322) and fifth in on base percentage (.386). – Link

Tumwater grad Matt Johnson is out indefinitely with a stress reaction. Johnson missed all of last season for the Dallas Cowboys because of hamstring problems and was hurt in the first preseason game on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. He will miss Friday’s game against Oakland. – Link

Adam Conley picked up his second win in a row last night allowing just one unearned run on two hits over seven innings in Jacksonville’s 8-1 win over the Tennessee Smokies. The Olympia grad is now 9-4 with a 3.41 ERA for Miami’s double-A affiliate. – Link

Joash Brodin was named the Atlantic League Player of the Week today after a week that saw him hit .429 (12-for-29) with three home runs including a walk off grand slam. The North Thurston alum drove in eight runs and stole three bases for the Long Island Ducks and now is second in the league with a .337 batting average and first in the runs scored with 62. – Link

Northwest Christian is looking for a new head baseball coach after Damon Ford announced today that he is moving to California. Ford spent three seasons at the helm of the Navigators after taking over for Don Heinze, who also moved to California. – Link

Saturday news & notes: Brodin’s waddle off slam

North Thurston alum Joash Brodin hit a “waddle off” grand slam last night in the Long Island Ducks’ 11-8 win over the Camden Riversharks. Skip to the 3:43:00 mark of the video above to see Brodin hit the very first pitch he saw in the at-bat well over the right field wall in Bethpage, New York to end the game. Brodin went 3-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBIs in total and is now hitting .336 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs for the independent Ducks.  – Box score

Olympia’s Kramer Champlin relieved Lansing starter Daniel Norris after a rain delay and gave up just two hits over the next 3 1/3 innings to pick up his fifth win of the season in a 2-1 Lugnuts win over the Clinton Lumberjacks. Champlin is now 5-2 with a 3.75 ERA this season. – Box score

Oly_RollersThis news is almost a month old, but the Oly Rollers confirmed to the Derby News Network that they will not be competing in the WFTDA post-season this year after winning The Hydra in the first year they were eligible in 2009 and then three straight second place finishes in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Oly did not schedule enough WFTDA sanctioned events to qualify for the post-season opting to schedule more USARS events this season. – Link

North Thurston alum and ex-US National Team and Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller will join the US National Team as a goalkeeper coach for the remainder of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. – Link

Timberline 2009 graduate and current Eastern Washington linebacker Ronnie Hamlin has been named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, one of 20 nominees for the outstanding defensive player in the Football Championship Series regular season. Hamlin is a senior at Eastern but could be granted a sixth year after missing both 2009 and 2010 with injuries. He has played in 25 games since and had 136 tackles last season. – Link

Another Timberline grad, Cameron Peck, continued his hot 2013 summer taking home the PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship with a 7 and 6 win over Hans Reimer in Bandon, Oregon. Peck also won the Washington State Amateur earlier this summer. – Link

Capital, North Thurston, Olympia, River Ridge, Timberline and Tumwater will battle for the title in support of families fighting pediatric cancer at Children’s Hospital in Seattle and pediatric cancer research. Following the action today, O’Blarney’s is hosting a post-tournament party beginning at 4:00 PM. O’Blarneys will donate 20% of all tabs opened between 4:00 and 10:00 PM and there will be a variety of items up for auction including a Seattle Sounders jersey signed by the entire team.

The tournament continues on Sunday at 9:00 AM with the championship game getting underway at 1:15 PM.

Budd Bay Rugby’s Tatunka 7’s – Evergreen State College – 10:00 AM

The annual Tatunka 7’s rugby tournament hosted by Budd Bay Rugby kicks off the 7s season in the Pacific Northwest. The tournament will feature three divisions – men’s competitive, women’s open and men’s open – and last year featured 22 teams in a double elimination tournament. The Tatunka 7s tourney used to accompany Super Saturday, the celebration on Evergreen’s campus the day after graduation but has stood on it’s own since the funding for Super Saturday was cut.

High school baseball

4A State Tournament
Olympia 12, Lake Stevens 1
Kentwood 13, Olympia 7

Olympia scored ten runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings and Elliot Loague went the distance to give the Bears a 12-1 win in the first round of the state tourney in Everett.

The Bears season came to an end in the quarterfinals with a 13-7 loss to Kentwood.


3A State Tournament

Mount Si 3, North Thurston 2

North Thurston scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score at two but Mount Si pushed across a run with the bases loaded and two outs to end the Rams season. Hayden Maliska and Ande Grantham each had RBIs for the Rams in the sixth.


2A State Tournament

Tumwater 4, Fife 1
Tumwater 3, North Kitsap 0

Tumwater pulled a huge upset ending Fife’s season at 22-4 overall with a 4-1 victory at Yelm High School.

The T-Birds scored twice in the third inning and that was all that they would need to advance to the semifinals next week at County Stadium in Yakima with a 3-0 win over North Kitsap. This is the first time in school history that Tumwater has advanced to the final four.

High school baseball

4A State Tournament
Olympia vs. Lake Stevens – Everett Memorial Stadium – 1:00 PM

Olympia travels to Everett to take on the District 1 champions, Lake Stevens, in the regionals round of the state baseball tournament. The Vikings finished in second place of the Wesco North but won three straight in districts to claim their spot. The winner moves on to play either Bothell or Kentwood at 4:00 PM at Everett Memorial Stadium while the loser sees their season come to an end.


3A State Tournament

North Thurston vs. Mt. Si – Bannerwood Park, Bellevue – 1:00 PM

North Thurston takes on KingCo champion Mt. Si at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue today in the first round of the state tourney. The Vikings beat Mercer Island and Bellevue to advance to state. The winner will take on either Meadowdale or Peninsula immediately after at Bannerwood.


2A State Tournament

Tumwater vs. Fife – Yelm HS – 1:00 PM

Tumwater faces a tough draw when they open the 2A State Tournament today against 22-3 Fife at Yelm High School. The Trojans have won 17 straight games including the West Central District championship to advance to this point. The winner will take on either Sedro Wooley or North Kitsap at 4:00 PM in Yelm. The game can be heard on the Eli Sports Network.


High school softball

4A West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament
Olympia vs. Puyallup – Sprinker Rec Center, Spanaway – 11:00 AM
Rained out. Rescheduled for Monday at 1:00 PM

Do or die for Olympia this morning when they face Puyallup. With their split on Friday, they will face a winner-to-state, loser-out game against the Vikings. Puyallup was blanked by Todd Beamer in the first round and then blanked Mt. Rainier in the second round.


3A West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament

Timberline vs. Enumclaw – Sprinker Rec Center, Spanaway – 11:00 AM
Rained out. Rescheduled for Monday at 1:00 PM

Timberline only got one game in before the rains came on Friday but moved to a winner-to-state game this morning against Enumclaw. The Hornets are the #1 seed and had a bye in the first round. The winner moves to the semifinals and is guaranteed a spot at state while the loser falls into a loser-out game at 1:00 PM
