Week 1: My 5 year old daughter’s expert high school football picks

Addie prognosticating

Addie, taking her prognosticating duties extremely seriously.

It’s that time of year again, the high school football season is upon us in full force tonight. Oly Sports will be at the Shelton/Tumwater game tonight broadcasting for Shelton radio station KMAS. This season we will bring to you The Countdown to Kickoff beginning at 6:00 PM. This week, we look at the Shelton team, talk to Tumwater offensive coordinator Jamie Weeks, preview the 3A Narrows League, the North Mason and Mary M. Knight seasons, talk about the other Olympia area teams and give our predictions for the week’s games and talk with Shelton head coach Matt Hinkle.

Listen to The Countdown to Kickoff to get our take on the games, but even better, my five year old daughter, Addie, is back to give you her picks on each of this week’s games. Here is the entire schedule, complete with radio information and Addie’s expert, scientific picks…

—————

Tumwater T-Birds vs. Shelton Highclimbers
Tumwater Stadium – 7:00 PM – Radio: 1030 AM KMAS or 1240 AM KGY

Addie’s pick: T-Birds
“They will poke them in the face.” – Rory, 2 1/2 years old

Timberline Blazers vs. River Ridge Hawks

South Sound Stadium – 7:00 PM – Radio: Eli Sports

Addie’s pick: Blazers
“The Blazers are gonna, kind of, try to stop the other team by blazing them.”

Olympia Bears @ Lake Oswego Lakers

Lake Oswego HS – 7:00 PM – Radio: Lake Oswego student broadcast

Addie’s pick: Bears
“WE LIVE IN OLYMPIA!” – Rory
“The Bears will eat the Lakers.” – Addie

Capital Cougars vs. Newport Knights

Ingersoll Stadium – 7:00 PM – Radio: Eli Sports

Addie’s pick: Knights
“The Knights’ armor protects them from Cougar bites and scratches and they will push their sword down on the Cougars.”

Black Hills Wolves @ Clover Park Warriors

Harry Lang Stadium, Lakewood – 7:00 PM

Addie’s pick: Warriors
“They are going to kill the Wolves. Shoot them. With their guns.” – Addie
“Oooo, that’s cold.” – Rory

Tenino Beavers vs. Raymond Gulls

Beavers Stadium – 7:00 PM

Addie’s pick: Beavers
“They are going to whack the Gulls out of the air with their tails”

Yelm Tornadoes vs. Highline Pirates

Tornadoes Stadium – 7:00 PM

Addie’s pick: Tornadoes
“The Tornadoes will go over the water and to the pirate ship and suck it up and drop it and sink it!”

Rochester Warriors @ Ridgefield Spudders

Ridgefield Stadium – 7:00 PM

Addie’s pick: Spudders
“THEY’RE GONNA THROW POTATOES AT THE OTHER TEAM!”

Rainier Mountaineers vs. Naselle Comets

Rainier HS – 7:00 PM

Addie’s pick: Comets
“If one of the Comets comes crashing down on top of one of the Mountaineers, it’s going to squish the mountain climber.”

North Thurston Rams vs. Steilacoom Sentinels

South Sound Stadium – Saturday, 7:00 PM – Radio: Eli Sports

Addie’s pick: Rams
“The Rams will come pushing into the other team. They’re gonna headbutt them!”

Oly Sports high school football preseason power rankings: T-Birds on top

The T-Birds sit atop the Oly Sports preseason power rankings.

The T-Birds sit atop the Oly Sports preseason power rankings.

It’s that time of year again, folks. Football season is just days away and so is the local media’s near non-stop obsession. And I guess Oly Sports is no different, so let’s kick off this season with some preseason, highly unscientific power rankings. A little preview of the upcoming season for each local team and where they sit in relation to each other. Of course, they aren’t all in the same division or on the same level, but what does that really matter?

——————————————–

1. Tumwater T-Birds
Last season: 12-2 – Lost to Lynden in the 2A state title game
Next game: vs. Shelton – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: The T-Birds lost their two top players from last season’s 2A second place team – Andrew Brown and Jamie Bryant – but as always, the T-Birds are able to quickly reload. They return quarterback Jayden Croft, tight end Zach Delucco and two important pieces of the wing-T running game, running backs Christian Cummings and Tyrus Snow on offense. On defense, they feature DI recruit Nick Foerstel and senior Korye Trejo on the defensive line. In week one they get a Shelton team that gave them an opening day defeat last year, their only loss of the regular season. Hard to imagine it happening two years in a row especially since Shelton has lost most of their top players from a year ago, including running back Ralph Kinne.

2.
Timberline Blazers
Last season: 9-2 – Lost to Marysville-Pilchuck in 1st round of state playoffs
Next game: vs. River Ridge – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook:  The Blazers return a great deal from a team that made it to the first round of the state playoffs including do-everything Asan Neil-Evergin, who already has an offer from Eastern Washington. Also coming back after his season ended prematurely is junior quarterback Gabe Gutierrez. His sophomore season was eye opening and look for him to continue to excel in Nick Mullen’s pistol offense.

3.
North Thurston Rams
Last season: 9-3 – Lost to University in the state quarterfinals
Next game: vs. Steilacoom – South Sound Stadium – Saturday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: Ryan Mets returns to the quarterback position for the Rams and Hayden Maliska will hold down the running back duties this season and play linebacker and the Rams will try to improve upon their run to the state quarterfinals last year. Watch out for 6-6, 320 pound offensive lineman Alex Rice who will be opening up holes for Maliska and Josh Ramirez.

4.
Olympia Bears
Last season: 4-7 – Lost to Auburn in crossover game
Next game: @ Lake Oswego – Lake Oswego, Oregon – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: With the Derrick Becker transfer question behind them, the Bears hope to improve upon their tough 4-7 2012 that still saw them make the playoffs thanks to a rather weak 4A Narrows League. With Becker, a two-time all league player at Capital, likely their quarterback, Mitch Fettig at wide receiver and Cedar Frost and Caden Waggoner behind him in the backfield, chances are the Bears will be one of the better offensive teams in the league. And with Fettig and Cooper Murphy on defense, you could see a major turnaround from last season.

5.
Capital Cougars
Last season: 10-3 – Lost to Lynden in the state semifinals
Next game: vs. Newport – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: Gone are three key offensive cogs to the Cougars success last season – QB Derrick Becker and the single season rushing record holder Kai Van Sickle and lineman Mat Cox.  But the Cougars do return two runners that filled in admirably for Van Sickle when needed in juniors Connor Kennedy and Ryan Rieta. Capital lacks experience but it is hard to imagine that JD Johnson’s team will struggle too much this year.

6.
Black Hills Wolves
Last season: 4-5 – 5th in 2A EvCo
Next game: @ Clover Park – Harry Lang Stadium, Lakewood – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: The first team in the power rankings with a new head coach is Black Hills. The Wolves let Jack Zilla go and in comes Dominic Yarrington, who has been successful in all of his stops, most recently in West Seattle. He will have an experienced group of linemen that play both ways to lean on and has installed an up-tempo spread offense. Look for a lot of running back Nick Knittle and running back Mitch Stone.

7.
River Ridge Hawks
Last season: 5-4 – 4th place in 2A EvCo
Next game: vs. Timberline – South Sound Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: How do you replace Brad Wallace? That’s what River Ridge will be asking itself all year long in all three of his sports.  Chris Leiba sounds like a good option but he is only a sophomore and will be asked to play both running back and defensive back. They will be fast and have a big line, but with only two returning starters on offense, it might be a struggle for the Hawks.

8.
Shelton Highclimbers
Last season: 7-3 – Lost to Nathan Hale in the crossover game
Next game: @ Tumwater – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: The Highclimbers lost one of their best classes of all-time – Ralph Kinne, David Ajamu, Jake Lindley, DeShon Bell, Jared Welander amongst others – but do return a decent group of players on defense including Brian Nault and will have Jake Henry, who looked good in the scrimmage and in mop up duty for Kinne last season, at running back. Jake Beck takes over at quarterback.

9.
Tenino Beavers
Last season: 6-4 – Lost to Woodland in crossover game
Next game: vs. Raymond – Beaver Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: Another team with big losses, the Beavers won’t have offensive juggernauts Devante Harris and Mac Shaw to rely on. To be honest, I don’t know what to expect for Tenino but I expect that they will find a way to reload and will battle with Elma for third place in the league behind powers Hoquiam and Montesano.

10.
Yelm Tornadoes
Last season: 5-5 – 5th in 4A Narrows League
Next game: vs. Highline – Yelm Tornadoes Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: Jason Ronquillo takes over the head coaching duties for the Tornadoes and will have to reteach his team how to play football. The Tornadoes didn’t have a quarterback last season in Randy Swilley’s rugby style offense and will be without their all time leading rusher Jake Swilley. But Ronquillo’s resume turning around Hoquiam does bode well for Yelm. Don’t be surprised if they move up this list quickly.

11.
Rochester Warriors
Last season: 2-7 – 6th in 1A Southwest
Next game: @ Ridgefield – Ridgefield Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: The senior class of Rochester football players are now on their fourth head coach. This year, it’s Eric Snelson. Snelson is a first year head coach but brings a wealth of experience with him from Black Hills including Jack Zilla, Shane Dover and just about any other Wolves coach you can think of. It might be a struggle in Rochester, but if they can keep Snelson in town, the Warriors’ fortunes may be on the rise.

12.
Rainier Mountaineers
Last season: 1-8 – 7th in 1A Southwest
Next game: vs. Naselle – Rainier HS – Friday, 7:00 PM

Outlook: The last new head coach is Terry Shaw, who has the unenviable task of trying to right the ship in Rainier. Numbers are up for the Mountaineers and I’d expect an extra win here or there, but as one of the smallest 1A schools in the state, it’s hard to imagine much improvement record-wise, especially in a league that consists of Hoquiam, Montesano, Elma and Tenino.

Dee Dee Montgomery resigned as Saint Martin’s head track & field coach today less than a month after taking the job. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics participant has taken an administrative position at another university. The  search is on for another head coach, the third since since Julie Sullivan stepped down in January. Chad Colwell was the interim coach when Sullivan stepped down and had the interim tag removed in April. Evergreen grad and former coach Jason McConnell was named head coach of the cross country team today as well. – Link

Tumwater grad Jamie Bryant was one of the first 2013 recruits to verbally commit to the University of Washington football team but is now having to watch this season from Tumwater taking classes part time at SPSCC and working out at the high school after he was asked to greyshirt and not join the team until 2014. – Link

ThurstonTalk.com profiles Black Hills High School libero Jensyn McCoy. The senior will lead a Wolves team that has a new coach, Tika Chandler, after her coach for the previous three years, Kara Peterson, left for Saint Martin’s. 2013 Olympia area high school graduates playing collegiate athletics

With the college sports season almost upon us, here is an incomplete list of 2013 Olympia area high school graduates that are moving on to play collegiate athletics. So if you know of someone that I missed or perhaps I have some bad information on somebody listed, please either email me at olysportsblog@gmail.com or leave a comment.

Baseball alumni: Smith wins NAIA title; Boyle and Weiks open NCAAs; Calhoun’s squad in NJCAA title

Faulkner
Black Hills alum Ryan Smith and his Faulkner University Eagles won the NAIA championship on Thursday night with an 11-4 win over Lewis & Clark State on LCSC’s home field in Lewiston, Idaho. Faulkner went 56-11 this season and was the #1 ranked team in the nation. Smith, a junior that pitched two years at Chemeketa Community College before transferring to the Montgomery, Alabama school, appeared in nine games for the Eagles posting a 2-0 record with a 2.52 ERA in five starts.

BoyleIn other college baseball post-season news, two area high school baseball players open the NCAA Division I regionals tomorrow. River Ridge alum Brandon Boyle and South Alabama will take on Mercer in Starkville, Mississippi at noon while Capital grad Jourdan Weiks and the University of San Francisco will face Rice at 2:00 PM in Eugene, Oregon. Both games can be seen on ESPN3.

Boyle, a junior transfer from Lower Columbia Community College, has made 19 appearances and four starts for the Jaguars posting a 2-2 record striking out 36 batters over 45 2/3 innings of work. South Alabama is 42-18 so far this season and is the #2 seed in the Starkville regional, hosted by Mississippi State, the #1 seed. Mercer is the #3 seed while Central Arkansas is the #4.

Weiks_JordanWeiks had his struggles for the Dons in his sophomore season hitting just .159 in just 44 at-bats. He started 10 times and appeared in 34 games scoring 13 runs for the Dons. USF went 34-22 this season and are the #3 seed in the Eugene regional where they will face the #2 seed Owls. Oregon is the #1 seed and will face #4 South Dakota State on Friday.

One last local post-season note: Nick Calhoun, the incoming head coach for the Hawks Prairie Cardinals of the Puget Sound Collegiate League, is an assistant coach for Murray State College in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. With a 6-0 win over Heartland on Thursday night, the Aggies moved into the National Junior College Athletic Association championship game on Saturday. Calhoun’s squad is 45-22 this season and will take on either Madison College or LSU-Eunice for the title.

Saint Martin’s 8, Central Washington 0 – Recap from SMUSaints.com

GNAC Pitcher of the Year Sam Munger gave up just three hits over six innings and GNAC Player of the Year Lacey McGladrey homered and drove in four runs in Saint Martin’s 8-0 win over Central Washington on the first day of the GNAC tournament in Billings, Montana. Aubree Pocklington went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Saints.

While McGladrey and Pocklington get the offensive headlines with seven RBIs between them, it was Madi Davis’ RBI single in the second inning that proved to be the game winner. The game ended in the bottom of the sixth when Pocklington drove in Taviah Jenkins to make the score 8-0 to trigger the mercy rule.

Munger won her 21st game of the season and #22 Saint Martin’s moved to 37-13 overall. They will face Simon Fraser on Friday morning at 9:00 AM. The winner moves on to the championship game on Saturday while the loser will face the winner of the Central Washington/Western Oregon game in an elimination game Friday afternoon.
