Monday news and notes (Updated throughout the day)

Matt Johnson

Tumwater grad Matt Johnson ran with the second team defense last night for the Dallas Cowboys in their 24-21 win over the Miami Dolphins in the Hall of Fame Game. Unfortunately for Johnson, who missed all of his rookie season with an injury, he landed awkwardly on a tackle and didn’t return. X-rays on his ankle were negative, but he will have an MRI when the Cowboys return to Oxnard, California this morning. – Link

Timberline alum Jonathan Stewart had surgery on both ankles this off-season and has yet to practice for the Carolina Panthers. The team says they have no idea when he will be ready to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list. – Link

The Toronto Blue Jays promoted Olympia grad Kramer Champlin to advanced-A Dunedin last week after posting a 6-2 record with a 3.50 ERA with the Lansing Lugnuts. Yarrington tabbed to lead Black Hills football

wolvesThe Black Hills football Twitter account announced this morning that Dominic Yarrington has been hired to take over as head football coach. Yarrington comes to Black Hills after two seasons at West Seattle and will replace Jack Zilla, who resigned earlier this year.

Yarrington will be on his fifth head coaching job at Black Hills. In 1998, Yarrington took on a challenge at Tyee where he was able to increase turnout numbers and finished with a 2-5 record in his only season at the helm of the Totems. He then guided White River from 1999 to 2002 and posted four winning seasons. After a year as an assistant, Yarrington took over at Lindbergh in Renton compiling a 26-17 record over four seasons including a 10-2 season in 2009. He spent the last two years at West Seattle posting a 9-9 record for the Wildcats.

He will have a challenge at Black Hills taking over a program that went 4-5 last season. But just one of those wins came in the extremely tough 2A Evergreen Conference that features Tumwater, Capital and WF West.

Hoquiam’s Ronquillo steps down, will take over as football coach at Yelm

YelmTornadosRick Anderson of The Daily World in Aberdeen reported today that Jason Ronquillo has stepped down as the head football coach at Hoquiam High School and will take the head football coach position at Yelm. The 37 year-old Ronquillo has spent six years as the head coach at Hoquiam compiling a 32-28 record including a 25-8 record since the Grizzlies stepped down from 2A to the 1A ranks.

Ronquillo will take over for Randy Swilley, who stepped down at the end of the season following a 5-5 year that saw his son, Jacob, become the school’s all-time leading rusher and set a single season touchdown record while running a quarterback-less offense that was, even for high school football, extremely gimmicky.

As a broadcaster that had to call one of Yelm’s football games this past season, I will not be sad to see that style of offense go.
