After breaking a two year losing streak on the road, the Angela Spoja led Evergreen volleyball team makes their official home debut tonight in a Cascade Conference game against Concordia. The Geoducks were picked to finish last in the CCC but look to be much improved. Concordia is 4-2 this season and were picked to finish fourth in the conference.

Saint Martin’s 3, Academy of Arts 1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 25-17) – Box
The Saint Martin’s volleyball season kicked off with a 3-1 win over the Academy of Art at the Otter Classic at Cal State-Monterey Bay. Kristyn Ross racked up 10 kills and 12 digs, Kyra Davidson led the Saints with 16 kills, Halee Hernandez had 20 digs and Candice Pedroza added 16 assists. It is only the second opening match win for the Saints in the past six years.
The Saints play once more today, taking on Dominican University of California at 3:00 PM.

The soccer season at Saint Martin’s gets underway for real today when they host a men’s and women’s doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM. The men welcome fellow NCAA Division II squad Chico State to town. The Wildcats were 9-3-6 last season and will pose a tough test for the Saints. Another tough test for the Saints comes at 5:30 PM when the women play host to the NAIA Division II’s 5th ranked Concordia Cavaliers. Olympia High School grad Olivia Brock has played in all three of Concordia’s games at goalkeeper. The freshman has made two starts and has given up just one goal in 200 minutes and may get the start in her hometown today. The Cavaliers are 3-0 and have outscored their opponents 11-1. Olympia quarterback Derrick Becker won his appeal to play football for the Bears this season after originally being ruled ineligible by school administrators. The senior transferred from Capital during the summer. The contentious transfer makes the Spaghetti Bowl even more interesting this season. Mark your calendars for September 13th. – Link

Dee Dee Montgomery resigned as Saint Martin’s head track & field coach today less than a month after taking the job. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics participant has taken an administrative position at another university. The search is on for another head coach, the third since since Julie Sullivan stepped down in January. Chad Colwell was the interim coach when Sullivan stepped down and had the interim tag removed in April. Evergreen grad and former coach Jason McConnell was named head coach of the cross country team today as well. – Link

Tumwater grad Jamie Bryant was one of the first 2013 recruits to verbally commit to the University of Washington football team but is now having to watch this season from Tumwater taking classes part time at SPSCC and working out at the high school after he was asked to greyshirt and not join the team until 2014. – Link

The senior will lead a Wolves team that has a new coach, Tika Chandler, after her coach for the previous three years, Kara Peterson, left for Saint Martin’s. McCoy has verbally committed to play collegiate volleyball at Central Washington. – Link

Timberline alum Jonathan Stewart still has not practiced for the Carolina Panthers this preseason and will not play on Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens. There is no timetable for his return from surgery on both of his ankles during the offseason and head coach Ron Rivera said that it is possible that he ends up on the physically unable to perform list. If he is put on the PUP list, he will miss the first six weeks of the season. – Link

In other NFL injury news, Tumwater’s Matt Johnson was hoping to return to practice on Monday for the Dallas Cowboys but still has not seen the field since his injury in the Hall of Fame game. The Cowboys expect him to practice either at the end of this week or next week. – Link

Touch luck loss for Olympia alum Adam Conley last night. Conley struck out seven, gave up three hits and one walk over six innings but allowed a solo home run and an RBI double in Jacksonville’s 2-1 loss in game one of a doubleheader in Chattanooga. Conley is now 11-6 this season with a 3.29 ERA for the Miami Marlins double-A affiliate. – Link

The GNAC men’s soccer preseason poll was released today and Saint Martin’s is picked to finish seventh out of eight teams. Only GNAC newcomer, South Dakota School of Mines, is picked to finish below the Saints who won only three games last season and finished in the basement. – Link

South Puget Sound continues to sign players for the 2013-2014 season. This week coach Aaron Landon announced the signing of Brandon McGurkin, a 6-7 post from Moscow, Idaho and Brian Tyson, a 6-4 wing from Olympic High School in Bremerton. McGurkin helped the Moscow Bears to the state championship game where they fell by just two points to Rigby and Tyson led the Trojans to a 2A Olympic League title.
Tyson was profiled by the Kitsap Sun last season and you can watch him hit a 65 foot game winner against Kingston in December by clicking here.

The Olympian has the story today about former Capital quarterback Derrick Becker being ruled ineligible having his eligibility questioned to play at Olympia this season. He will have a hearing on Wednesday, August 21st to determine whether or not he will be allowed to play his senior season for the Bears. – Link

South Puget Sound head coach Aaron Landon continues to put together his first team for the Clippers. Yesterday he announced the signing of Josh Proctor, a 6-2 wing from University High School in Los Angeles. Proctor averaged just 4.3 points and 3.5 boards per game in his senior season but caught the attention of SPSCC at a tournament in Oregon. Pictured above are Proctor, his family and Los Angeles Clippers center Ryan Hollins. Coach Landon says that Hollins has been a mentor to Proctor. – Link

Saint Martin’s continues to count down the top moments of the 2012-2013 sports year and they have come to #2 on the list, a walk off of single by Sam Munger that scored Megan Miller that clinched the GNAC regular season title for the Saints. – Link
