Liz Mills scored 18 points and Krista Stabler added 16 in Saint Martin’s 66-58 exhibition win over Carroll College on Thursday night at Marcus Pavilion.
A three pointer by Mike Robinson with 10:54 left in the first half gave Carroll their largest lead of the game at 19-13. But Saint Martin’s battled back and the two teams took a tie into the locker room at 33.
SMU struck first in the second half on a layup by Krista Stabler but Katie Estey’s three a minute later gave Carroll the lead at 36-35, the last lead that Caroll would hold. They would tie it up at 41 but a 6-0 run capped off by Brooke Paulson’s jumper with 11:04 left put Saint Martin’s up for good. Mills twice gave SMU a nine point lead, once at the 4:10 mark and again with 1:14 left to play.
Elin Johansson scored 11 points and pulled down seven boards in her debut at Marcus Pavilion. Mills added seven rebounds to her game high 18 points and Stabler led the way with six assists.
Bailey Snelling scored 17 points for Carroll including 13 in the first half. Cassidy Hashley added 11 points and seven rebounds. The Saints of Carroll hit nine three pointers while the Saints of Saint Martin’s went 0-for-7 from long distance.
The Saints return to Marcus Pavilion on Wednesday, November 5th to take on Northwest Christian at 6:00 PM.

A three pointer with 13:53 left from Alix Hernandez put Evergreen up by seven for the fourth time in the second half but Saint Martin’s went on a 13-1 run capped by a three from Ryan Rogers with 9:49 left put the Saints up for good. The Geoducks cut the lead to two on a Hernandez layup with 1:47 left but it was the last bucket the Geoducks would score until a last second shot when the game was already out of reach and the Saints took home an 82-79 exhibition win.
Five Saints scored in double figures led by Riley Carel’s 15 points. Carel also dished out 10 assists as two Saints notched double-doubles on the night. Ryan Rogers scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Newcomers Victor Ieronymides and Trey Ingram scored 12 and 14 points respectively in the win. The Saints shot a blistering 63% from the floor.
Two of Evergreen’s newcomers led the way for the Geoducks. Alix Hernandez and Kortney Darby each scored 20 points with eight rebounds. Returnees Jordan Dam and Frankie Johnson scored 15 and 11 points each. Evergreen went 12-for-31 from three point range and only turned the ball over six times.
The Saints travel to Seattle on Thursday night to take on the University of Washington while Evergreen will open their regular season on November 13th in a non-conference game against conference foe Northwest.
Evergreen used a 9-1 run to open up the second half and took a 37-35 lead with 17:43 left but the Saint Martin’s went on their own 15-3 run over the next nine minutes and never trailed again in a 62-53 exhibition game win at the CRC Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Brooke Paulson scored 18 points and Krista Stabler kicked in 16 for the Saints. Swedish Freshman Elin Johanson started in place of Megan Wiedeman and pulled down 12 rebounds to go with her eight points. The Saints held Evergreen without a field goal from the 14:35 mark to just under the two minutes left to play.
The Geoducks were led by Uriah Thomas and Brittany Gray with 11 points apiece. Evergreen played just eight players and both Sadee Thomas and Gray fouled out.
Oh yeah, the college hoops season tips off when Saint Martin’s and Evergreen play their annual games. Tonight, the games are out at Evergreen beginning with the women at 5:00 PM and continuing at 7:30 with the men.
Both of Evergreen’s teams are coached by new head coaches. The women are led by former Geoducks assistant coach Jennifer Schooler and her challenge is to keep her eight players fresh throughout the game. Injuries and ineligible players has left them shorthanded but still talented with forward Brittany Gray leading their returnees.
Meanwhile, the men are now coached by Tim Malroy, an Olympia native and previously the head coach at Green River Community College. The Geoducks have a couple of solid returnees in Frankie Johnson and Jordan Dam but will rely on a bevy of transfers to round out the roster and hopefully improve on three straight awful years in the CCC.
Meanwhile, in Lacey, the Saints women look to make the playoffs once again and return a solid squad led by senior Angela Gelhar. All-GNAC forward Chelsea Haskey graduated but the emergence of Megan Wiedeman last season tempers that loss and a lot will be expected of the junior forward this season.
On the men’s side, Michael Ostlund enters his second season as head coach and not much is expected out of his squad, at least in the pre-season GNAC poll where they finished tied for 9th. The Saints will likely play various small lineups again with returning guards Riley Carel, Ryan Rogers, Tyler Copp, Isaac Bianchini and Will Bond playing together in various combinations.
