Timberline and North Thurston came into the game separated by just a half game in the 3A Narrows League standings but after the tip, it was obvious that they were light years apart.

The Blazers opened up a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Behind hot shooting and relentless defense, they extended their lead to 32-7 with 3:12 left in the second quarter, continued to pour it on in the third quarter before finally putting it on cruise control en route to a 59-23 victory.

Callan Russell and Sara Bowen each scored 14 points in the win. Freshman Juliana Salanoa chipped in eight points and Linae Myhand added seven. Emma Baldwin led the way with five points for the Rams.

Timberline moved to 4-1 in the 3A Narrows League and are tied with Lincoln for second place, one game behind 5-0 Wilson. The Abes and Blazers meet at Timberline on Friday night.

The Rams fell to 3-3 in league and will host South Kitsap in non-league action on Friday.

The South Puget Sound basketball teams continue their busy week when they host Centralia in doubleheader action at the SPSCC Gym.

The South Puget Sound women knocked off Grays Harbor on Monday night to move to 2-3 in the NWAACC West thanks to double-digit scoring from four Clippers. Meanwhile, the Centralia women come into the game at 3-1 in the NWAACC West and are coming off of their first league loss, a 55-48 defeat at Highline on Monday.

It has been a struggle for both the SPSCC and Centralia men this season with just two wins between the two programs. The Clippers are 1-4 in the NWAACC West while Centralia is 1-3. Northwest Christian’s Zach Carras is on the Centralia roster, but has played in only five games and not since January 2nd. He is averaging 18 points in the games that he played.

Two points separated the two teams as late as 51 seconds left but SPSCC scored extended their lead to 61-55 with 14 seconds left to close out the game. South Puget Sound shot 48% in the second half and held Grays Harbor to just 29% shooting in the final 20 minutes to pick up the win.

The Clippers moved to 2-3 in the NWAACC West and 3-11 overall while Grays Harbor dropped to 0-4 in the West and have lost eight straight games.

SPSCC 31 44 75
SPSCC leader: Slanblaytee Kaye – 23 points

Slanblaytee Kaye scored 23 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and dished out 13 assists but his triple-double wasn’t enough to lead vastly undermanned SPSCC to a win, falling 77-75 to Grays Harbor.

According to the box score, the Clippers played just six players. Four of them went all 40 minutes, Brandon McGurkin played 39 1/2 minutes and Brandon Logan played 30 seconds. Despite five of their players playing all but 30 seconds of the game, the Clippers played stronger in the second half scoring 44 points with seven 3-pointers. But they were killed by their free throw shooting knocking down just 13-of-29 attempts.

Keegan Liebelt scored 18 points on six 3-pointers, River Ridge grad Jonathan Roberts added 13 points and Brian Tyson notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Today (1/13): Clippers Host Chokers in Monday Doubleheader

clipperstritons_3
Men’s and women’s basketball

SPSCC women vs. Grays Harbor – SPSCC Gym – 6:00 PM
SPSCC men vs. Grays Harbor – SPSCC Gym – 8:00 PM

It has been a struggle for the South Puget Sound basketball teams this season with just three wins between the two programs, but the women are much improved over the last couple seasons and the men have played hard despite defections and injuries and both teams have a good chance at wins tonight when they host Grays Harbor in doubleheader action beginning at 6:00 PM.

The SPSCC women are just 2-11 this season but have been competitive and have found a couple of solid players. Maria Jesse, a transfer from Saint Martin’s, leads the Clippers with 14.2 points per game and pulls down 7.2 rebounds per game including a 23 point, 16 rebound outburst in a win over Green River last Saturday. Sofia Guerra, a 2010 graduate of College Park High School in Pleasant Hills, California, is chipping in 12.2 points per game in her freshman season and Tumwater’s LaKeisha Anger is putting up 12 points and eight rebounds per game.

The men have just one win to their credit this season and head coach Aaron Landon is having to deal with a lot of adversity in his first season in Olympia. The Clippers lost guard Austin Bonds for the season when he broke his wrist on Saturday night. Unfortunately, the Clippers have played just seven players over their last three games and without Bonds, they might be limited to just six players tonight. Brian Tyson leads the Clippers with 15 points per game.

The women and men face Grays Harbor programs that haven’t fared much better this season. The Chokers are a combined 0-6 in the NWAACC West this season.

olyrollers2014

The 2014 roller derby season kicks off this evening when the Oly Rollers play host to Snohomish County’s Jet City Hula Honeys at Skateland! beginning at 6:30 PM. Tonight is the first of three bouts over the next week for the four Olympia area roller derby organizations – Oly Rollers, Underground Derby, JBLM Bettie Brigade and MIA Derby Girl – here in Derby City USA.

The Oly Rollers are the reigning USARS national champions after plowing through a schedule of less experienced, weaker, USARS opponents last season. But they will return to their roots this season with five WFTDA rules home bouts currently on the schedule through June and a trip to the WFTDA Big O Tournament in Eugene, Oregon in early May in the works. The WFTDA is the standard, largest and most competitive governing body in roller derby and Oly won the national championship in 2009 and finished second in 2010, 2011 and 2012 before taking a leave from the championship tournament last season.

Doors open tonight at Skateland! at 6:00 PM with derby action getting underway at 6:30. Tickets are available at the door for $15.
