Freshman Ryan Porch scored his first goal as a Geoduck in the 78th minute to break a 1-1 tie and Evergreen got an insurance goal late from Willie Spurr to open the season with a 3-1 win over Northwest Christian. Tom Kemennu opened the season with a tap-in off of the rebound of a Porch shot in the 29th minute to put the Geoducks up 1-0. Evergreen outshot the Beacons 23-5 in this non-conference game against a conference foe in Springfield, Oregon. They return to Geoducks Pitch to host Doane on Sunday at 2:00 PM.

The Geoducks return to action on Sunday when they face the University of British Columbia in another scrimmage at Geoducks Pitch. First kick is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
SPSCC Swaps Softball for New Volleyball Program
South Puget Sound Community College announced today that they have dropped softball from their roster of sports offered and will be adding a volleyball program beginning in the fall of 2016.
The announcement ends a tumultuous period in SPSCC softball history. Success came for the program in the 90’s and they were the runners-up for the NWAACC championship in 1992.
But more recently, the team practiced on a neglected campus field that was more often than not a mess due to the weather and they played most of their games across town at The RAC. The 2012 season was cancelled due to a lack of players and since returning in 2013, the Clippers posted a 3-56 record and were outscored 740 to 217. This season came to an abrupt end after an 0-10 start.
While I hate to see a program get the axe, this move makes sense. With the cancellation of the 2015 season, the softball team was left with no coach, no players and no facility. The team was only a team in theory making it very easy to drop. SPSCC will save money on field rental and equipment with the volleyball team and they can likely charge admission to games.
My only reservation comes from the fact that the two established college volleyball teams in town have found very little success historically and if the Saint Martin’s and Evergreen teams have not been able to recruit from a traditionally strong group of local high school players, what makes anybody think that SPSCC can?

SPSCC Athletics to Launch Volleyball Program
For the first time in 23 years, South Puget Sound Community College Athletics is adding a new intercollegiate sport: volleyball. SPSCC Clipper Volleyball will take to the court for the first time during the fall 2016 season.
“When I was hired, I was given the task of helping to lead a rejuvenation of the department; to not just field teams but to field quality teams in both character and in talent,” SPSCC Director of Athletics Nick Schmidt said. “No one can dispute the quality of talent in Thurston County. With that success came numerous players moving on to college outside of our local area; now we will be able to provide an avenue for those players to stay home.”
Last year, five Thurston County high schools made their respective state volleyball tournaments, with Tumwater winning the 2A state championship and Capital finishing as the 3A runner-up.
Clipper Volleyball will be the eighth team competing in the Northwest Athletic Conference West Region, replacing Clark College, which moves to the South Region at the beginning of this competition year. Schmidt said a coaching search will begin soon, with the ultimate goal of hiring a coach in late fall 2015. That will allow the new coach time to start recruiting in January and play a direct role in all elements associated with starting a program.
“Wanting to make the ‘right hire’, I’ll be consulting with people in the local volleyball community, NWAC and NCAA as we begin the search process,” Schmidt said. “I want to make sure we bring on someone who will not only be a great leader and role model to our players, but someone who can also lay the foundation for a successful program.”
This move follows the decision of SPSCC Athletics to discontinue its intercollegiate softball program, effective immediately. Schmidt served notice to the NWAC Executive Board of the decision on Aug. 5.
“While the overall history of our softball program should never be forgotten, recent history unfortunately left it in an extremely unstable situation,” Schmidt said. “This move will reenergize Clipper Athletics as well as bring more athletic events to campus, allowing us to better engage the students and supporters of SPSCC. I won’t rule out eventually bringing the program back, but it was time that we moved in a new direction.”

Salme Goes Small, Swaps Hoops Position in Olympia for Adna
Olympia High School boys basketball head coach Luke Salme announced on Tuesday that he is leaving the Bears and has accepted the same position and an English teaching position at Adna High School.
“It is a bittersweet, but also very exciting time for our family,” said Salme in an email to OlySports.com. “These past eight years at OHS have been very special for me, and I have so many memories that will last a lifetime.”
Salme posted a 98-84 record in eight seasons at Olympia including a fourth place finish in the 4A state tournament in 2011 and a regionals berth in 2012. The Bears struggled this past season posting a 4-16 record, their worst finish since going 3-17 in 2007-08, his first season at the helm.
Salme, 36, graduated from Willapa Valley High School and played two seasons for Centralia College before moving on to Western Washington to become a teacher. Before taking over at Oly, he led Yelm to a 16-24 record in two seasons.
“My wife and I both grew up in small towns and absolutely treasured those times, and that is something we want our two young sons to experience as well,” Salme continued. “Adna is the perfect community and school for that.”
He will take over an Adna squad that went 17-6 overall and 15-3 in the 2B Central but dropped a pair of games in districts and missed regionals. Casey Dotson stepped down as the Pirates head coach in March after eight seasons.
VIDEO: Stabler Forces OT, Saints Take 69-67 Win
Krista Stabler’s last second bank shot three pointer tied the game at 58 and Saint Martin’s went on to take a huge 69-67 overtime win over Northwest Nazarene on Thursday night at Marcus Pavilion.
The win moved the Saints to 7-10 in GNAC play and kept them tied for fifth place with Central Washington with the Wildcats coming to town on Saturday night. The top six teams make the GNAC playoffs in Billings. Alaska and Montana State-Billings sit one game behind Central and Saints with just one game left to play.
Megan Wiedeman scored 13 points, pulled down 19 rebounds and set the single season record for blocks with six tonight, giving her 48 this season. She passes Juanita Mebane, who set the record during the 1997-1998 season.
Elin Johansson and Brooke Paulson each scored 15 points and it was Johansson’s layup with one minute left in overtime that proved to be the game winner. Liz Mills recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The loss eliminated the Crusaders from playoff contention.

In the first home playoff game in program history, the shorthanded Evergreen Geoducks put up a fierce fight building an eight point lead with 6:33 left to play. But when LaNiecia Weatherspoon picked up her fifth foul with 6:02 left, the Geoducks had to play without a sub the rest of the way and Oregon Tech gradually took advantage.
Karly LeVeque’s three at the 3:03 mark gave the Owls a 59-57 lead. Randi Boseman’s jumper with 2:41 left tied the game at 59 but Megan Whetstone put the Owls ahead for good after a questionable offensive foul was called on Evergreen’s Karina Gee with just over two minutes left to play. OIT finished off the Geoducks down the stretch to take a 69-62 first round win and end Evergreen’s season.
Natasha Trinidad was fantastic in her last game as a Geoduck scoring 19 points with six rebounds while another senior, Sadee Jones, scored 13 points with nine boards. Randi Boseman also saw her Evergreen career come to an end on a seven point, five assist effort.
The Geoducks finished their record setting and roller coaster season at 16-10 overall.
