Today (5/26): State softball, soccer, tennis continues

The Tumwater softball team continues their state tournament run this morning at Carlon Park in Selah with a semifinal game against Selah. The Tumwater soccer team may have had their undefeated season and state title hopes disappear last night with a 2-0 loss to Fife, but they can still take home third place in state by beating Archbishop Murphy at Sunset Chevy Stadium in Sumner. Game time is at noon.

In the state tennis tournament, Olympia’s Hunter Wood and John Stormans play in the semifinals against Alex Tsutsumoto and Andrew Choi of Newport. Both pairs have swept through the first two rounds winning two sets to none. Black Hills’ Julie Hansen is also still alive for a state championship. She plays Anna Lefebvre of Burlington-Edison in the semis this morning at the Nordstrom Tennis Center at the University of Washington.

And if you are looking for something to do close to Olympia, South Sound Speedway continues their racing season with mini stocks, hobby stocks, street stocks, legends and bump to pass racing. Qualifying is at 5:00 PM and racing starts at 6:30.

Baseball. Punk rock. Olympia. Warning Track was practically made for Oly Sports.

Last week, Olympia punk band Warning Track released their first album, Rookie Year, featuring 14 power punk songs about our national pastime. With songs like “Back in the Bigs”, “Chelsea in the Cheap Seats” and “Unassisted Triple Play”, their self-description of “Bad News Bears meets The Ramones” is definitely apt.

The Conrad Uno (Presidents of the United States, Mudhoney, Young Fresh Fellows) produced Rookie Year is available for download here for a pay what you want price (could even be free, if you want).

This morning (5/20): The Capital City Marathon

20120520-001014.jpg
Get up bright and early this morning and head down to Sylvester Park for the 31st Annual Capital City Marathon. The marathon starts at 7:00 AM, half marathon at 7:45 and the five miler begins at 8:00. If you want to check out the runners along the route, the Capital City Marathon website has a complete race map.

The Olympian’s Meg Wochnick had two excellent articles this week about the marathon. The first about Marilou Powers, the 50 year-old who is running in her 100th marathon today and the second about Jesse Stevick, five time Capital City Marathon winner.

Good luck to all the runners, I’ll be cheering you on from the comfort of my bed.

Saturday scoreboard: T-Birds to semis; Rams, Blazers seasons end

Boys soccer

Tumwater 3, Franklin Pierce 0 – More from The Olympian

After not registering even one shot on goal in the first half, Bradley Saner opened the scoring in the 44th minute and Tumwater never looked back in their 3:1 win over Franklin Pierce in the quarterfinals of the 2A state tournament. The T-Birds earned their first trip to the semifinals and will play Fife on Friday, May 25th at Sunset Chevy Stadium in Sumner.

Connor Sigmon scored what proved to be the game winner in the 52nd minute. Franklin Pierce cut the lead to just one in the 59th minute on a Richard Laducer goal but Sigmon closed the door with an insurance goal in the 60th minute and the undefeated season rolls along.

High school baseball

Timberline 5, West Seattle 0
Eastside Catholic 5, Timberline 1

Rick Ahlf went 3-for-4 and Matt Mercer got the win in Timberline’s 5-0 win over West Seattle in the opening round of the 3A state playoffs. The win setup a quarterfinals matchup with Eastside Catholic but the Blazers were unable to hold off the Crusaders and were bumped from the tournament with a 5-1 loss.

North Thurston 4, Fife 1
Sumner 5, North Thurston 4

North Thurston’s Tyler Ridgeway pitched a three hit complete game and went 2-for-3 with two runs to knock off Fife in the first round of the 2A state tournament at Bearcat Stadium in Chehalis. The two runs that the Rams scored in the first inning proved to be enough to move them into the next round against Sumner.

In the quarterfinals, the Rams took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning but Sumner answered right back with four runs in the fifth inning and added another in the seventh. Down 5-3, North Thurston scored a run in the bottom half of the inning but Spencer Dorsey was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a passed ball and the Rams season came to a heartbreaking end.

High school softball

Prairie 6, Capital 0

Capital was shutout twice in districts and their season came to an end with an 8-10 record.
