Today (9/26): Big Narrows League volleyball games; SPSCC soccer
Two big Narrows League volleyball games are on tap for tonight when North Thurston visits Timberline and Olympia hosts Bellarmine with first place on the line in both games.
North Thurston and Timberline both come into tonight at 5-0 in 3A Narrows League play. The Rams are 7-0 overall while Timberline has lost just one match, a five set loss to Capital. The Rams have yet to drop a set on the season.
Across town at Oly, the Bellarmine Lions come into tonight at 5-0 in the 4A Narrows League and are 6-1 overall. Olympia is 4-1 in league play, their only loss coming on the road to Gig Harbor on September 11th. The defending state champion Bears are 4-3 overall.
Both games are set to get underway at 7:00 PM.
The struggling South Puget Sound men’s soccer team plays just their second home game of the season today when Clark comes to town. The 0-8 Clippers are dead last in goals scored (5) and are 18th out of 20 teams in goals allowed (27).
The Penguins come to town at 6-1-2 overall and are in first place in the NWAACC South at 3-0-1. Borce Atanasov leads the NWAACC with 11 goals and has added four assists in eight games for the Penguins.
First kick at the RAC is scheduled for 4:00 PM.

Men’s soccer
Concordia 2, Evergreen 0 – Recap from Evergreen Athletics
Concordia’s Sam Carmichael scored in the 21st minute and Gerrit Hamann scored the insurance goal in the 52nd minute and the 25th-ranked Cavaliers knocked off Evergreen 2-0 in a battle for first place in Portland. Both the Geoducks and Cavs came into the game at 4-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference and Concordia leaves with sole possession of first place at 5-0.
Two time reigning CCC defensive player of the week Collin Harlow made four saves in the Geoducks’ loss while Arne Niermann was only forced to make two saves for Concordia. The Cavs out shot Evergreen 15-7 and held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Joslin Lindsay scored two goals for Black Hills in their 3-0 win over River Ridge at the RAC in Lacey. Arin Seidlitz also scored and Ce Ce Noyen made two saves for the Wolves in the shutout. Across town, 2A EvCo leader Capital battled to a 0-0 tie with WF West before the game was decided in penalty kicks. The Bearcats won the shootout 5-4 to move into a three way tie with Black Hills and Capital at 4-1 in conference.

Rachel Erickson racked up 10 kills, Marissa Ottesen had 12 digs and Sam Yorke added 26 assists in Capital’s 3-0 win over WF West. The win moves the Cougars into a tie with Tumwater atop the 2A EvCo at 4-0. Black Hills stayed one game behind the leaders with their 3-0 win over River Ridge. Hope Mortensen was 16-for-18 serving with eight aces for the Wolves. Northwest Christian moved to 4-1 in the 2B Pacific League with their straight sets win over Willapa Valley.

Hannah Adams and Rachel Kelson had nine and seven kills respectively and Kayla Challer racked up 26 assists to lead Olympia to a straight sets win over winless Yelm. With the win, the Bears move to 4-1 in the 4A Narrows League, one game behind Bellarmine. The Bears host Bellarmine on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
Timberline continued to roll through 3A Narrows League competition getting 18 kills from Riley Podowicz and 40 assists from Hunter Manke in a 3-0 win over Mount Tahoma. Meanwhile, North Thurston easily took care of Lincoln behind eight Brittany Rutherford kills. The Blazers and Rams both move to 5-0 in the 3A Narrows League setting up a match for first place on Wednesday when the Rams travel to Timberline at 7:00 PM.

If I had pick one game to go to tonight in the Olympia area, it’s the game that I will be attending and calling for KMAS, the Shelton/Yelm game featuring the Highclimbers’ Ralph Kinne and the Tornadoes’ Jacob Swilley. But if you want to travel, the North Thurston/Lincoln game in Tacoma is worth the drive. Both teams are 3-0, Lincoln has a highpowered offense and North Thurston has had an outstanding defense all season long. The winner will claim sole possesion of first place in the 3A Narrows League.

Carrie Starbuck led the way with 12 kills, Hallee Hernandez added 18 assists and Kristyn Ross had 16 digs and Saint Martin’s knocked off Alaska Fairbanks 3-1 in the Saints’ first GNAC and home contest of the season. The Saints have now won three straight games and are 1-0 in the GNAC. Fairbanks drops to 0-3 in league play. Saint Martin’s Randi Mielki picked up a red card in the 75th minute on a handball in the box and Jennifer Larsen scored on the resulting penalty kick to give the undefeated Montana State Billings Yellowjackets the 1-0 win over the Saints in Billings on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellowjackets out shot the Saints 24-7 and had ten shots on goal compared to the Saints’ zero attempts.

Stephanie Taylor scored in the eighth minute and Lena Moreno broke a 1-1 tie in the 37th minute to lead Capital past River Ridge 4-1. Logan Cox scored two more goals in 53rd and 67th minute to cement the Cougars victory. Timberline’s Krista Jones posted a shutout and had five saves in the Blazers’ 3-0 win over Shelton. Alyssa Gubser scored what proved to be the game winner in the 11th minute. Alli Thompson scored minutes before halftime to give Black Hills a 1-0 lead over WF West and CeCe Noyen posted a shutout in the Wolves’ 3-0 victory.
