PHOTO GALLERY: Blazers Roll Past Crosstown Rival Rams
Timberline and North Thurston came into the game separated by just a half game in the 3A Narrows League standings but after the tip, it was obvious that they were light years apart.
The Blazers opened up a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Behind hot shooting and relentless defense, they extended their lead to 32-7 with 3:12 left in the second quarter, continued to pour it on in the third quarter before finally putting it on cruise control en route to a 59-23 victory.
Callan Russell and Sara Bowen each scored 14 points in the win. Freshman Juliana Salanoa chipped in eight points and Linae Myhand added seven. Emma Baldwin led the way with five points for the Rams.
Timberline moved to 4-1 in the 3A Narrows League and are tied with Lincoln for second place, one game behind 5-0 Wilson. The Abes and Blazers meet at Timberline on Friday night.
The Rams fell to 3-3 in league and will host South Kitsap in non-league action on Friday.

Evergreen played host to Southern Oregon last night and dropped a pair of Cascade Conference games to the Raiders.
The women suffered through a cold first half and despite scoring 50 points in the second half, they were unable to get closer than eight points in an 86-72 loss. The men came close taking the #6 NAIA team in the nation down to the final minute before they couldn’t get anything to fall and dropped an 80-76 decision.

Oly Sports Pictures of 2013
From roller derby to a high school football state title game, from MMA fights to women’s soccer, I tried to get out and photograph local sporting events as much as I could in 2013. Considering I’m not a trained photographer, have less than professional equipment, don’t get paid and sometimes have small children in tow, I’d say I didn’t do too bad.

In a game highlighted by big runs for both sides, Ryan Rogers scored 22 points to lead Saint Martin’s to a 74-64 win over Pacific Lutheran in non-conference action in Parkland.
The Saints opened up a 9-0 lead at the 16:26 mark but PLU quickly answered with a 17-2 run over the next 8 1/2 minutes that gave the Lutes their largest lead of the game at 17-11. Evan Coulter’s fastbreak layup with 1:28 left in the half capped off an 18-5 run that saw the Saints open up a 29-22 lead. But again, the Lutes answered with a seven point run to tie the game at 29 with nine seconds left in the first half. Coulter promptly raced up court and calmly buried a three pointer to give the Saints a three point halftime lead, 32-29.
The Saints started the second half on yet another run, outscoring the Lutes 13-3 over the first 6 1/2 minutes and took a 45-32 lead on a Rogers layup with 14:30 to play. But PLU buckled down and went on a 17-6 run and were down just two, 51-49, at the 9:13 mark. Issac Bianchini drained a three with 5:52 to play to give the Saints another nine point lead but PLU again chipped it down to three points with four minutes left. It was the closest the Lutes would get and Saint Martin’s finished on a final 14-4 run that gave the them the 74-64 win.
Coulter scored 19 points on the night and pulled down seven rebounds and in addition to his 22 points, Rogers led the Saints with nine boards. Bianchini added 10 points in the win.

Yelm’s stifling full court defense and 6-4 sophomore Christian Davis’ explosion erased a 19-17 halftime deficit with an 11-3 third quarter and Yelm held on in a long and wild fourth quarter to knock off Olympia, 50-41, in the 4A Narrows League opener at Chick Rockey Gym.
Davis scored a game high 17 points including a layup at the 4:16 mark of the third quarter that gave Yelm the lead, 22-21. Davis was hammered as he knifed through traffic on the next possession and hit one of two free throws to give Yelm a two point lead before Chad Davis hit a jumper in the lane on the next possession to give the Tornadoes a 25-21 lead, one that they would never relinquish.
The two teams scored a combined 41 points in a foul and free throw filled, timeout laden fourth quarter that took nearly as long as the rest of the game to play.
Christopher Burian added 16 points for Yelm, who moved to 1-0 in the 4A Narrows League. Mitch Fettig scored 13 points and Khalil Matheney notched 10 quiet points for the Bears, who fell to 0-1 in league.

Jayden Croft scored two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter (including the fantastic effort seen above) to cut the Tumwater deficit to just seven points with 4:26 to go. But Lynden wrestled an onside kick attempt away from a pile of T-Birds on the ensuing kick off and finished off the drive with a 30 yard field goal with 1:34 left to play and held on to a 38-28 win in the WIAA 2A state title game at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday afternoon.

Men’s basketball
Edmonds 89, SPSCC 70
South Puget Sound led for most of the first half but constant full court presssure by Edmonds forced 30 Clippers turnovers and the Tritons pulled away in the second half to take an 89-70 decision at the SPSCC Gymnasium.
Joseph Johnson scored 22 points for the Clippers and Keegan Liebelt added 10 points on three long distance buckets in the first half that helped them take an early lead. Brandon McGurkin pulled in 11 rebounds while Slanblaytee Kaye dished out nine assists.
Edmonds got a double-double from Samuel Omondi. His 24 points and 11 boards led the way while Devin Stoen and Ramsey Rosales each scored 16. The Tritons held a 22-2 advantage in second chance points and scored 34 points off of SPSCC’s 30 turnovers.
The Clippers fell to 0-2 in the early season and have over a week off before taking on Lane CC in the Pierce College Thanksgiving Tournament beginning on Friday in Steilacoom.
PHOTO GALLERY: Cougars Take Second Place
Burlington-Edison knocked off Capital in three sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17, to capture the 2A state championship at Pierce College in Steilacoom. It was the best finish for the Cougars since current head coach Natalie Rhodes and the 1994 squad took second place.
PHOTO GALLERY: Timberline Comeback Falls Short
Timberline scored two touchdowns in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter and appeared to have recovered an onside kick with 29 seconds remaining but were called for an interference penalty when the Blazers defender hit the Mavericks receiver and didn’t allow him to make a the catch. Meadowdale was awarded the ball, took a knee and ended the Blazers 2013 season, 28-21.
Junior quarterback Gabe Gutierrez threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns including the two in the fourth quarter to Trent Gallagher and Jonathan Dowell but also fumbled in the endzone when Meadowdale’s Charlie White delivered the hit and rolled over and recovered the ball to give the Mavericks a 28-7 lead.
The loss snapped a five game Timberline winning streak and dropped the 3A Narrows League #1 seed to 6-4 overall. With the Blazers eliminated, Lincoln’s loss to Eastside Catholic and Wilson’s injury weakened defeat at Glacier Peak, the 3A Narrows League did not advance any teams to the state playoffs.
