Tonight (8/31): Geoducks volleyball; Football season is a go

Eastern comes into the game at 6-2 already on the season including a 4-1 record in the Cascade/Frontier Challenge over the weekend. Today (8/30): Saints and Geoducks soccer at home; Capital football opens in Bellevue

The college soccer regular season gets underway in earnest today with a pair of games at Saint Martin’s and Evergreen.

This afternoon, the Saint Martin’s women host Cal State Stanislaus. The Warriors are the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions and went 11-4-6 in 2011. First touch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at the SMU Soccer Field.

Following the Saints game, head across town to Evergreen where the Geoduck men host Menlo College at 5:00 PM. Menlo is coming off of a California Pacific Conference championship and a trip to the NAIA national championships in 2011.

And the high school football season kicks off this evening when Capital travels to Bellevue to take on Newport at 7:00 PM. Capital is the #2 ranked 2A team in The News Tribune’s coaches poll released yesterday while Newport was unranked by the coaches in the 4A poll.

My pick…

Capital 35, Newport 24

Today (8/29): Saints face PLU in volleyball opener

The Saint Martin’s volleyball team gets their season underway tonight with a scrimmage against PLU at Marcus Pavilion.

The Saints were picked to finish eighth in the GNAC this season after finishing seventh last season with a 5-13 league record and a 7-18 overall record. The Saints are led by two seniors, middle blockers Katy Ferguson and Teilissa Tua and freshman-of-the-year outside hitter and Capital graduate Kristyn Ross.

This is an extremely young Saints squad with 13 of 17 roster spots taken up by freshmen or sophomores including Northwest Christian’s Kelsey Minton, Tumwater’s Nicole Grisham, North Thurston’s Julia Wabinga and River Ridge’s Halee Hernandez.

Game time tonight at Marcus Pavilion is at 6:00 PM.

Galloway dismissed as Capital basketball coach

Shocking news reported today by The Olympian: Doug Galloway has been dismissed as the boy’s basketball coach at Capital High School due to a “lack of supervision” at a basketball camp at Western Washington University where there was an incident described as “forced sexual contact” between students.

The camp took place June 28-30 and the incident happened on June 29th when Galloway was attending a university event.

Galloway will remain as a PE teacher and the girl’s golf coach at Capital.

With Galloway’s dismissal, Capital joins River Ridge, Timberline and Black Hills as area boy’s basketball programs that will have new coaches for the 2012-2013 season.

Let the football begin

It’s just a little over an hour until high school football practices start. Wednesday, August 15th at 12:01 AM, teams can begin practicing. And since we are so close, let the previews and articles start flying.

Meg Wochnick at The Olympian kicked it off today with three storylines to follow, three players to watch and three games to see this season. What? No three Shelton Highclimbers broadcasts to listen to?
