Tonight (2/2): EvCo on the line, Saints at home

Big big big game tonight in Lacey when River Ridge hosts North Thurston. The Rams are in first place at 8-2 in the 2A Evergreen Conference but the Hawks are nipping at their heels just one game behind at 7-3.  North Thurston won the first game 68-51 on January 13th behind 18 points each by seniors Landon Rushton and Ben Broeker. River Ridge’s Brad Wallace scored 20 in the first meeting. All three have had big games recently. Wallace scored 37 points against Tumwater on Tuesday, Broeker scored 36 against Black Hills on Tuesday and Rushton had 38 against Tumwater on Friday.  Tip-off is set for 7:30.

In men’s basketball action, Saint Martin’s (8-12 overall, 4-7 GNAC) returns home to take on Simon Fraser (6-12 overall, 1-9 GNAC). The Saints scorched the Clan 90-68 in their first meeting in Burnaby, British Columbia on January 7th. Jeremy Green had 26 points and Brok Pendelton had 21. Simon Fraser features Cal Poly transfer Justin Brown – the GNAC’s fifth leading scorer at 15.7 points per game –  at guard. The Saints’ Green is third at 17.4 ppg. Tip-off at Marcus Pavilion is at 7:00 PM.

It’s also senior night for the Northwest Christian girls when they take on Raymond at 7:15 PM.  Raymond beat the Navigators 42-40 in their first meeting.

Black Hills put a scare into North Thurston but Ben Broeker’s 36 points, including the first four points in overtime (according to @MegWochnick), kept the Rams from dropping a shocker to the Wolves. Meanwhile, River Ridge kept pace with the Rams with their victory over Tumwater. Brad Wallace had 37 points in the win and helped set up a game on Thursday between the second place Hawks at 7-3 and North Thurston with the league title on the line.

Men’s basketball

SPSCC 75, Centralia 66

MSU-Billings 82, Saint Martin’s 74 – More from MSUBsports.com

SPSCC ground out the only win for Olympia area colleges on Saturday night knocking off Centralia College 75-66 despite 32 points from Centralia’s Van Lockett. The Clippers improve to 3-5 in the NWAACC West division and Centralia drops to 2-7.

Women’s basketball

Centralia 61, SPSCC 41
Eastern Oregon 54, Evergreen 53 – More from Geoducks athletics
MSU-Billings 58, Saint Martin’s 52 – More from SMUSaints.com

The Evergreen State College women, just 4-18 on the season, continue to give ranked opponents fits. On Saturday in La Grande, the Geoducks fell just a buzzer beater short of beating the #8 ranked Eastern Oregon Mountaineers falling 54-53. The Geoducks led by as many as ten in the second half and were up by one with just 2.4 seconds left but were whistled for a fould and EOU’s Dominique Johnson sank both her free throws to win the game. Black Hill’s Danielle Swain led the way for Evergreen with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Boy’s basketball

Northwest Christian 66, Ocosta 48

Zach Carras scored 21 points for the Northwest Christian Navigators…all in the second quarter. That’s a solid eight minutes of work.

Indoor Soccer

South Sound FC Shock 13, WSA Rapids 8 – Unofficial score, as recalled by @Emmettoconnell

UPDATE FROM SSFC: South Sound FC 12, WSA 9

Big win for the South Sound FC in their third home game at Tumwater Indoor Sports. WSA Rapids was undefeated coming into the game and had beaten the shock 11-3 at the Bellingham Sportsplex in December. The win moves the Shock’s record to .500 at 3-3.

January 27th recap: One North Thurston team seizes first place while the other falls

Boy’s basketball

Capital 75, Timberline 59
Olympia 56, Central Kitsap 34
River Ridge 67, Black Hills 58
North Thurston 86, Tumwater 69

Landon Rushton scored 38 points for North Thurston in their 86-69 victory over Tumwater. The win moves the Rams into sole possession of first place in the EvCo. The packed house in Lacey witnessed a wonderful performance by Rushton, a hard fought game by both teams and a symphony of whistles as over 45 fouls (I estimated closer to 50) were called on the two teams, and yet you could say that the referees showed tremendous restraint in a very rough and tumble kind of game.

Girl’s basketball

Northwest Christian 35, Ocosta 25
Central Kitsap 50, Olympia 42
Timberline 53, Capital 38
Tumwater 58, Centralia 34
W.F. West 59, North Thurston 42

However, down in Chehalis, the lady Rams couldn’t secure first place in the EvCo falling to W.F. West 59-42. W.F. West jumped out to a commanding 30-16 halftime lead and were never seriously threatened again.
