Tonight (2/13): Boys district basketball; State Capital Museum hosts hoops history panel
The boy’s basketball districts continue today with four games, all a short drive from Olympia…
The Olympia boys basketball team squeaked into the playoffs on the last day of the regular season with a 55-54 win over Central Kitsap and will have to travel to Covington to take on Tahoma, the #2 seed out of the 4A SPSL. Tahoma fell to Curtis 74-53 in the SPSL championship game on Thursday and are 15-6 overall this season. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
In 3A action, Timberline travels to Tacoma to take on Auburn Mountainview in a loser out game. The Blazers finished in third place in the Narrows League at 7-5 with a 12-8 overall record and won four of their last five games including key wins over Mount Tahoma and Wilson that helped them into the playoffs. Auburn Mountainview was 13-10 overall and went 7-3 in the SPSL. However, the Lions have lost three straight games and four of their last five. Tip-off at Franklin Pierce High School is scheduled for 7:45 PM.
Three area teams are still alive in the 2A District IV playoffs. River Ridge meets WF West for the third time this season, Capital takes on Mark Morris and Tumwater faces a loser out game against Washougal.
River Ridge and the Hawks split their season series with WF West falling 61-60 in Chehalis and walloping a Brock Wade-less Bearcats squad 73-50 in Lacey. Brad Wallace and the Hawks have won 11 straight games since their loss on December 18th to Centralia including their last second win against Washougal in the district first round game last week. The Hawks and Bearcats get underway at 7:45 at Centralia High School.
Winners of five straight games, Capital next faces Mark Morris who were 7-1 in the GSHL and 15-5 overall. Both teams are coming off of relatively easy wins over Hockinson and Centralia in the first round. The two teams square off at WF West High School in Chehalis at 7:45 PM.
Tumwater’s season could come to an end tonight when they face Washougal at Centralia High School at 6:00 PM. The T-Birds fell to 6-15 overall with their loss to WF West in the first round while Washougal lost at the buzzer to River Ridge and fell to 14-7 overall.
And finally, if you are sticking around town, the State Capital Museum hosts a panel discussion about the history and future of basketball in the Northwest. “Basketball in the Northwest: Past, Present and Future” will feature Sonics great Slick Watts, his son and Washington Huskies star Donald Watts and Saint Martin’s men’s basketball coach Keith Cooper. The discussion starts at 6:30 PM and there is a $2 suggested donation and youth basketball players are free. For more info, click here.

Baseball season is upon us in early February and it looks like the weather will cooperate. Today, Saint Martin’s makes their home debut after dropping their opening series at Cal Poly Pomona last week.

Saint Martin’s faces a critical test tonight with Central Washington in town. The Saints offense has been virtually non-existent in the last two games and as a result, they have fallen out of a playoff spot currently sitting in seventh place at 4-8. Central sits right behind them in eighth at 3-8.
It’s senior night at Evergreen and the Geoducks will honor four players wrapping up their careers before tonight’s game against Southern Oregon. Seniors Jessica Edge and Dela Jones will be joined by juniors Maddie Graves and Danielle Swain, both of whom are graduating and moving on with a year of eligibility remaining.

Saint Martin’s upset Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, can they pull off another Alaska upset tonight when they face the Nanooks? Fairbanks sits in a tie for third place in the GNAC at 7-5 while the Saints win got them back into the hunt for the final playoff spot. They currently sit in eighth place at 3-8.
Travis Wagner and Elzie Dickens will play their last game at Evergreen tonight when the Geoducks host #24 ranked Southern Oregon. The two seniors were the only returners from last season’s one win team.

Tumwater Pioneers vs. Oregon Blacktails – Tumwater Indoor Sports – 7:00 PM
The Tumwater Pioneers wrap up the home schedule of their inaugural season still in search of their first win. After a tough stretch that saw them take on the top two teams in the league three times, the Pios host fellow expansion team Oregon tonight. The Blacktails sit at 2-5 and have lost four straight games, their last win coming against the Pios in December. Tickets are just $5 for adults.

Angela Gelhar came off the bench and exploded for 20 points including four three pointers to lead Saint Martin’s to a 74-57 win over Alaska-Fairbanks. The Saints move to 4-4 in GNAC play and coupled with a Central Washington loss to Western Washington, they are now tied with Seattle Pacific for fifth place.
Playing without second leading scorer Brooke Paulson and starting point guard Jori Skorpik, Jordyn Richardson stepped up and hit four three pointers of her own and scored 15 points. Chelsea Haskey added 16 points, 12 in the first half as the Saints opened up an 32-23 halftime lead. Mackenzie Taylor scored just two points but hauled in 13 rebounds in the win.
Men’s basketball
Montana State-Billings 77, Saint Martin’s 64 – Box score
Roger O’Neill scored 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds but it wasn’t enough as Montana State-Billings knocked off the Saint Martin’s 77-64. A poor shooting first half proved to the be the difference as the Saints made just nine field goals in the first half and shot just 36% from the field. Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets shot 52% and opened up a 13 point lead, 41-28, at the half.
The Saint Martin’s bench hit just two field goals in the game. Eric Taylor came off the bench to score 11 points on 1-of-10 shooting. He was 9-of-10 from the free throw line. The Saints fell to 2-6 in GNAC play this season.
Boys basketball
Capital 66, Centralia 64
Capital hit 14 three pointers and came back from a seven point halftime deficit to knock off Centralia 66-64 and move into sole possession of second place in the 2A Evergreen Conference, a half game ahead of River Ridge.
Keenan Williams led the Cougars with 15 points and Jared Eidenmuller and Justin Rudd added 14 and 12 points respectively. Baylor Scott scored 23 points for the Tigers.
Tonight (1/24): Saints women host Nanooks; Capital faces conference test

Saint Martin’s vs. Alaska-Fairbanks – Marcus Pavilion – 7:00 PM
Saint Martin’s returns to Marcus Pavilion tonight when they face Alaska-Fairbanks in the first game of an important series against two struggling Alaska squads. The Saints currently sit at 3-4 in GNAC play, tied for sixth place with Central Washington. The top six teams in the conference make the GNAC tournament to be played at Saint Martin’s in March. The Nanooks are just 2-13 overall this season and are dead last in the GNAC at 0-7.

Capital vs. Centralia – Capital HS – 7:30 PM
Important game in the 2A EvCo tonight when Capital squares off against Centralia at Capital High School. The Cougars are currently tied with River Ridge for second place at 6-3 while Centralia sits just a half game back at 5-3. The two teams met on December 20th in Centralia and the Tigers handed Capital a four point loss.

Centralia went on a 12-4 run over the last five minutes of the game but were unable to convert with less than 15 seconds left and fell to River Ridge, 62-61. The win coupled with Capital’s 68-62 win over Black Hills moves the Hawks and Cougars into a tie for second place at 6-3 in 2A EvCo play while Centralia dropped to third place at 5-3. Brad Wallace scored 24 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Hawks.

Danielle Swain scored 15 points and Sammi Clark added a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards to lead Evergreen to a 63-56 win over Northwest Christian in Eugene. The Geoducks used runs of 11-0 and 9-1 to build a ten point lead after the first half. But the Beacons cut the lead to just three with just over a minute to play. The Geoducks hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the victory.

Busy night of boys basketball in the Olympia area tonight. If you have to choose one game, I’d suggest heading to Timberline to watch four Division I recruits when the Blazers host #1 ranked Lincoln at 7:00 PM.
The Blazers are led by Donaven Dorsey, a junior with offers from Gonzaga, UW and Wazzu amongst others. Timberline is 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the 3A Narrows League.
Lincoln features Colorado bound senior Tre’Shaun Fletching, California committed Ahmaad Rorie, last year’s 2A player of the year at Clover Park, and junior Armond Davis not to mention Caden Rowland. The Abe’s are 12-1 this season and undefeated in the 3A Narrows.
