Mired in one of the worst seasons in Saint Martin’s baseball history and facing second place Central Washington, the Saints jumped out to a 6-3 lead in game one of today’s doubleheader. But they were once again unable to hold a lead and fell to the Wildcats 7-6. Combined with their 9-2 loss in game two, SMU dropped to 4-34 overall and 2-19 in conference play.

The bright spot this season has been Chandler Tracy, who continued to rake going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in game one and 1-for-2 in game two. Tracey raised his average to .326 and leads the GNAC with 12 home runs. Travis Shaw, the Saints’ leading hitter, went 3-for-8 in the doubleheader to raise his average to .336.

But Central Washington’s Kyle Sani tied Tracy for the conference lead with two blasts in the game one, a two run job in the fifth inning and a solo shot to straight away center field in the seventh. Olympia High School alum Joel Johnson started at shortstop in game two and went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The two teams meet again tomorrow. First pitch in the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.

The 23rd ranked Saint Martin’s softball team secured their second straight 30 win season with an 18-15 abd 12-3 doubleheader sweep of MSU-Billings in rainy Montana.

Game one saw the Saints take a 10-0 lead before surrendering nine runs in the fourth inning and six more over the next two innings and the Yellowjackets took a 15-13 lead into the seventh inning. But Lacey McGladrey’s two run bomb in the top of the seventh gave the Saints a 16-15 lead and they would tack on a pair more and held on for the win.

McGladery led the way for the Saints going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Sam Munger went the distance and picked up her 15th win of the season despite giving up 13 earned runs.

More last inning heroics followed the Saints in game two. The two teams were deadlocked at three before Joselyn Eugenio’s three run homer in the fifth inning broke things wide open. Aubree Pocklington capped off the inning with a three run homer of her own to give the Saints a 9-3 win.

Saint Martin’s moved to 30-11 overall and 12-4 in GNAC play and with Simon Fraser idle, the Saints jumped into first place in the conference.

Saints hire Ostlund as men’s basketball head coach

rp_primary_ostlundMicheal Ostlund is the new head men’s basketball coach at Saint Martin’s, the school announced today.

Ostlund, an assistant for the Saints under Bob Grisham from 1997-2002, spent five seasons as the head coach at Snow College, a two year school in Ephraim, Utah before resigning before the 2012-2013 season. He led the Badgers to an 83-73 record in his time at Snow, a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference, one of the toughest junior college conferences in the counrty. He had his best season in 2011-2012 when his team went 23-9.

The stint at Snow was Ostlund’s first head coaching position after assistant stints at Salt Lake Community College, Saint Martin’s and Weber State. He graduated from Weber State and played two seasons for the Wildcats.

Ostlund replaces Keith Cooper, who wasn’t retained after ten seasons as the head coach of the Saints. He becomes just the third head coach at Saint Martin’s in 26 years. Current athletic director Bob Grisham coached the Saints for 16 years before turning over the reigns to Cooper.

The Saints will return 11 players next season from a team that went 10-16 overall and 6-12 in conference play, missing out on the playoffs that they hosted. Ostlund will have to replace the team’s two leading scorers, Roger O’Neill and Eric Taylor, and longtime, steady point guard Brady Bomber. But they have a solid, senior led core with forward Rei Jensen, guard Evan Coulter and center Matt Dodson returning from the starting lineup. Sophomore Will Bond exploded late in the season when he joined the starting lineup following an injury ended Dodson’s season.
