The college basketball season gets going today when the Evergreen teams take the court in the annual alumni games beginning with the women at 3:30 and continuing with the men at 5:30.

South Puget Sound continues to sign players for the 2013-2014 season. This week coach Aaron Landon announced the signing of Brandon McGurkin, a 6-7 post from Moscow, Idaho and Brian Tyson, a 6-4 wing from Olympic High School in Bremerton. McGurkin helped the Moscow Bears to the state championship game where they fell by just two points to Rigby and Tyson led the Trojans to a 2A Olympic League title.

Tyson was profiled by the Kitsap Sun last season and you can watch him hit a 65 foot game winner against Kingston in December by clicking here.

The Olympian has the story today about former Capital quarterback Derrick Becker being ruled ineligible having his eligibility questioned to play at Olympia this season. He will have a hearing on Wednesday, August 21st to determine whether or not he will be allowed to play his senior season for the Bears. – Link

SPSCC signs LA’s Proctor; Saints clinch title and #2 moment of the year

ProctorSouth Puget Sound head coach Aaron Landon continues to put together his first team for the Clippers. Yesterday he announced the signing of Josh Proctor, a 6-2 wing from University High School in Los Angeles. Proctor averaged just 4.3 points and 3.5 boards per game in his senior season but caught the attention of SPSCC at a tournament in Oregon. Pictured above are Proctor, his family and Los Angeles Clippers center Ryan Hollins. Coach Landon says that Hollins has been a mentor to Proctor. – Link

Saint Martin’s continues to count down the top moments of the 2012-2013 sports year and they have come to #2 on the list, a walk off of single by Sam Munger that scored Megan Miller that clinched the GNAC regular season title for the Saints. – Link

Tumwater Brewers vs. West Olympia Linx – The RAC – 5:00 PM

Tumwater BrewersIt’s the last day of July and the last day of the PSCL season. The West Olympia Linx have been the dominant force in the league this season with just three losses and have two chances tonight to win one game for the championship.

The Tumwater Brewers are the #3 seed and won two elimination games yesterday to advance to today’s title games. They have to win game one to force a second game that would be slated to start at 7:30 PM.

SlanblayteeThe greatest name in Olympia sports comes to town this fall when Slanblaytee Kaye takes the court for the SPSCC men’s basketball team. Head coach Aaron Landon announced the signing of Kaye, who actually went by his middle name Clarence in high school, yesterday. Coach Landon says that the 6-0 guard from Logan High School in Union City, California will go by Slanblaytee as a member of the Clippers. – Link

Tumwater superstar running back Kevin Clark has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and his family is raising money to cover his medical expenses. The ’91 grad was one of the best running back to ever come out of the area. – Link to his gofundme.com site

South Puget Sound men’s basketball signed another player on Thursday inking Bethel guard JJ Johnson to play for the Clippers this season. Johnson was a two time SPSL honorable mention for the Braves. – Link

ConleyOlympia grad Adam Conley pitched a seven inning complete game shutout in game one of a doubleheader for the Jacksonville Suns on Sunday. The Miami Marlins second round pick out of Washington State in 2011 struck out four in the game and moved to 8-4 and lowered his ERA to 3.66 for the double-A Suns. Next up for Conley is the Southern League All-Star game in Jacksonville on Thursday. – Link

Thursday scoreboard: Reign finish perfect season; Silvers top Brewers

International Basketball League

Olympia Reign 128, Nippon Tornadoes 115

Mike Ward scored 37 points and pulled down eight rebounds and the Olympia Reign finished their abbreviated 2013 season with a perfect record (2-0) with a 128-115 comeback win over the Nippon Tornadoes at the SPSCC gymnasium.

The Reign trailed by 12 points at halftime but outscored the Tornadoes 41-27 in the third to take a 96-94 lead into the fourth. Olympia continued their hot second half putting up another 32 points in the final quarter and held on for the 13 point victory.

Virgil Matthews and Patrick Lewis scored 25 and 22 points respectively and Giovonne Woods came close to a triple-double with 12 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds. Antonio McClinon led the Reign with 11 boards.

West Olympia Linx vs. Lacey Saints – No report

The Nisqually Silvers put a five spot on the board in the first inning and added runs in the fifth and seventh inning to hold off the Tumwater Brewers 7-5 in game one at The RAC. Naoki Imeto (Olympic College), Travis Shaw (Saint Martin’s) and Colby Fitzgerald (Bellevue University) each collected two hits and Shaw scored three times and Imeto drove in a pair of runs.

Spencer Dodd (Saint Martin’s) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Tanner Marty (Lower Columbia CC) added a two hits for the Brewers.

The Oly Rollers host an intersquad bout tonight to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Tickets are just $5 or by donation and they will have a load of items to auction off with all money raised going to Relay for Life. Items available for auction include Team USA Derby jerseys, Oly Rollers Cosa Barbie dolls, Oly Rollers photo book from their awesome team photographer Joe Rollerfan and more from various sponsors and supporters. Doors open tonight at 6:00 PM with derby action getting underway at 6:30 PM.

Olympia Reign vs. Nippon Tornadoes – SPSCC gymnasium – 7:00 PM

Not interested in game seven of the NBA finals? Well, the Olympia Reign wrap up their 2013 season, all of two games since they are considered a “branding team” that is still alive but looking for new sponsors and ownership, tonight at SPSCC against the Nippon Tornadoes. The Reign knocked off the Tornadoes last week 161-117 behind Nate Menefee’s 45 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists and Mike Ward’s 25 points, nine rebounds and 14 assists. The Reign roster for tonight includes a host of former Evergreen Geoducks including Menefee and Ward and former Saint Martin’s star Blake Poole, who is currently a member of the Bellingham Slam and is averaging 18 points and 11 boards.
