Today (6/16): Capital Stage Race; Tons of baseball; Fight night; Racing

I hate to short change this full day of sports but I’m pressed for time this morning so we’ll keep this short…

As I type this, stage two of the Capital Stage Race has begun, a time trial from Heritage Park down Deschutes Parkway and back. Stage three, the Capital Criterium gets underway at the State Capitol Campus this afternoon. Visit my viewers guide for more information.

The Capital City Bombers adult baseball team plays this morning at Crandall Field at Olympia High School. First pitch is at 10:00 AM. Sorry, the Bombers game is tomorrow.

The PSCL plays six games today, three sets of doubleheaders, at both the RAC and Saint Martin’s University. At the RAC, the action begins at noon with a doubleheader between the Nisqually Silvers and West Olympia Linx. Over at Saint Martin’s, the Tumwater Brewers face the Lacey Saints for a double dip starting at noon. Then, in the nightcaps, the Olympia Athletics square off against the Hawks Prairie Cardinals in two games starting at 5:00 PM.

South Sound Speedway continues its season tonight. As always, qualifying begins at 5:00 PM and racing begins at 6:30. Tickets are $12 for adults.

And finally, South Sound Sports Center hosts Northwest Fight Challenge XIV. A whole host of MMA action hits Tumwater at 7:00 PM, doors open at 6:00. Tickets are $25 for general admission or $50 for VIP ringside seating.

Thursday scoreboard: Reign rock Tornadoes; Brewers, Cardinals win league openers

International Basketball League

Olympia Reign 132, Nippon Tornadoes 109 – Box score

Nate Menefee hit seven three pointers and scored 28 points, dished out eight assists and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Olympia Reign to their fourth win of the season by beating the Nippon Tornadoes 132-109. Marcus Whitaker and Mike Ward scored 21 and 20 points respectively for the Reign and Giovanne Woods added another 13 points, 12 assists and seven boards. Brandon Adams, in his second game with the Reign, scored 16 points and had a team high 11 rebounds.

The Nippon Tornadoes were without the services of Jordan Mast and his 29.4 points and 13.2 points per game so Joe Wolfinger made up the difference by scoring 41 points and grabbing a ridiculous 35 rebounds, 26 of which were offensive.

Lacey Saints 6, Tumwater Brewers 1
Hawks Prairie Cardinals 7, Olympia Athletics 6

The Tumwater Brewers’ Devin Smith (Olympic College) and the Lacey Saints’ Colin Nilson (PLU) each gave up just one earned run over five and six innings respectively but Smith was the victim of an error and gave up an unearned run in the third inning and suffered the loss for the Brewers in their 6-1 loss to the Saints. Kyle Pegram’s (Pierce College) single to center in the fourth inning drove in Mark Klick (Green River CC) for the eventual game winning run and Devin Ferguson (Centralia College, North Thurston) continued his hot start driving in three runs on a bases clearing double in the 7th inning. Ferguson now has eight RBI in five games this season for the Saints. Kyle Holtman and Takashi Yamada (Olympic College) each went 2-for-4 for the Brewers.

Today (6/14): Saints, Brewers, A’s and Cardinals open PSCL league schedule

The league portion of the Puget Sound Collegiate League schedule starts tonight with a doubleheader at the RAC. Now that most, if not all, players are with their teams after their school year ended, from here on out the games count in the standings toward the ultimate goal of winning the league championship.

Tonight, the Lacey Saints host the Tumwater Brewers in game one of the doubleheader starting at 5:00 PM. The Brewers went 4-2 in the opening portion of the season despite hitting just .159 as a team in those six games. Kegan Duz-Aguilar (Centralia College) has two saves for the Brew Crew to start the season. Meanwhile, the Saints were one game behind the Brewers in the standings despite hitting .318 as a team. Christian Perez (De Anza CC) is 7-for-14 (.500) in five games played and Devin Ferguson (Centralia College, North Thurston) is 7-for-15 (.466) with five RBI in four games played. Colin Nilson (PLU) got the win in two of the Saints three victories and has given up just one earned run in nine innings pitched. On opening day, the Brewers beat the Saints 4-3.

In game two, the Olympia Athletics face the Hawks Prairie Cardinals. The A’s went 4-2 to begin the season behind two outstanding pitching performances from Ryan Smith (Chemeketa CC, Black Hills). In the first game of the season, Smith gave up just one earned and struck out ten batters in seven innings in a 4-1 win over the West Olympia Linx. On June 6th, Smith went eight innings and gave up two earned with eight K’s in a 3-2 win over the Tumwater Brewers. On the other hand, the Cardinals were just 1-4 and after winning their opener 12-3, they were outscored 27-10 in the next four games. The A’s took the first meeting between the two teams, 7-4.
