Today (10/3): Saints soccer doubleheader; Big girls soccer, volleyball match-ups

Women’s soccer

Saint Martin’s vs. Montana State-Billings – SMU Soccer Field – 1:00 PM

An important early conference season game for the Saint Martin’s women if they want to qualify for the playoffs. With three teams clearly at the top of the table – Western Washington, Seattle Pacific and Central Washington – the rest of the teams are battling for fourth place. Montana State-Billings and the Saints sit tied for fifth with three points, down by just a point to fourth place Western Oregon.

Men’s soccer

Saint Martin’s vs. Western Washington – SMU Soccer Field – 3:15 PM

The Saints (3-1-0) sit just a point behind Western Washington (3-0-1), who are tied with Seattle Pacific for second place. CJ Chu and Dylan Gaydosh have combined to score seven of the Saints ten goals this season and The Vikings’ Andrew Weishaar leads the GNAC in scoring with six goals and two assists. Capital grad Gabrielle Zaccagnini has three assists as a junior midfielder for Western.

Girls soccer

Timberline vs. Lincoln – South Sound Stadium – 7:00 PM
Black Hills @ Tumwater – Tumwater Stadium – 7:00 PM
Capital vs. Aberdeen – Ingersoll Stadium – 7:00 PM

Battle for first place in the EvCo 2A in the girls soccer version of the Pioneer Bowl between Black Hills and Tumwater tonight at Tumwater Stadium. Both teams are 5-0 in conference play. The Wolves have outscored their opponents 28-1 in conference play and 40-2 overall and have just one draw as a blemish on their record. The T-Birds have allowed three goals in the EvCo and are 7-2 overall.

High school volleyball

Timberline @ North Thurston – North Thurston HS – 7:00 PM
Tumwater @ Black Hills – Black Hills HS – 7:00 PM
Northwest Christian vs. Raymond – Northwest Christian HS – 7:00 PM

First place is also on the line in the 3A Narrows League when North Thurston hosts Timberline at 7:00 PM. The Rams are a game behind the Blazers at 4-1, their only loss coming to Shelton, who they are tied with for second place. The Blazers are 5-0 in league play and 7-0 overall.

Yet another battle for first takes place at Black Hills High School where the Wolves will host Tumwater at 7:00 PM. Tumwater sits in first place of the EvCo at 4-0 while the Wolves are 3-1.

Wednesday scoreboard: Bears shut down by #1; SPSCC spanked

High school volleyball

Bellarmine 3, Olympia 1 (25-9, 22-25, 25-12, 25-12)

#1 ranked Bellarmine dropped #4 Olympia three sets to one in Tacoma on Wednesday afternoon. It was the first loss of the season for the Bears who now sit in second place at 5-1 in the 4A Narrows League while the Lions are a game ahead of them at 6-0 and 8-0 overall.

High school football power rankings: T-Birds still on top, Hawks reach new heights

The T-Birds retain their top power ranking.

The T-Birds keep rolling

Tumwater kept on rolling this week and stays on top of the power rankings yet again. It will be big news if they lose that #1 spot this season. Tanner Gueller and WF West will have the best opportunity to knock them out when the T-Birds roll into Chehalis on Friday night.

Olympia has a lock on the #2 position after North Thurston got drilled by Lincoln and River Ridge moves up to a surprising #3 after three straight wins.

Here is my completely unscientific power rankings, disagree if you like…

——————————————–

1. Tumwater T-Birds (4-0)
Last week: #1 (No change)
Previous game: Tumwater 49, Capital 22
Next game: @ WF West (4-0) – Bearcat Stadium, Chehalis – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Sid Otton won his 350th game and Tumwater keeps finding new players to contribute. This week it was Trevor Davis, who blocked two Capital punts and a 180 yard, three touchdown performance from Tyrus Snow. They have their toughest test coming up this week, though, when they travel to Chehalis to take on 4-0 WF West.

2.
Olympia Bears (3-1)
Last week: #3 (+1)
Previous game: Olympia 54, Stadium 6
Next game: vs. South Kitsap (1-3) – Ingersoll Stadium – Saturday, 3:00 PM

Notes: Hard to take too much from a big win over Stadium, really, but the Bears took care of business and are rolling right now and next get a struggling South Kitsap team on Saturday afternoon.

3.
River Ridge (3-1)
Last week: #4 (+1)
Previous game: River Ridge 17, Hockinson 14
Next game: @ Black Hills (2-2) – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Well look at the Hawks. They had to come from behind to beat previously unbeaten Hockinson on Saturday and have now won three straight games. Michael Key scored two touchdowns for the Ridge and Chris Behnke made a 37 yard field goal that proved to be the game winner. They kick off EvCo play with Black Hills in what should be a close game.

4.
Rochester Warriors (3-1)
Last week: #5 (+1)
Previous game: Rochester 24, Hoquiam 12
Next game: @ Elma (2-2) – Davis Field, Elma – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Tyler Yarber is a beast. 34 carries, 237 yards and a touchdown in Rochester’s win over Hoquiam. That was Yarber’s third 200 yard performance of the season and the 3-1 Warriors have a date with an inconsistent Elma squad coming up.

5.
North Thurston (3-1)
Last week: #2 (-3)
Previous game: Lincoln 53, North Thurston 7
Next game: @ Wilson (4-0) – Stadium Bowl, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Wow, the Rams laid an egg on homecoming dropping a 46 point decision to Lincoln. The balance of power in the 3A Narrows League has officially shifted from Lacey to Tacoma with the Abes and Wilson sitting on top and the Rams and Blazers looking up at them. The Rams have an opportunity to turn it around when they travel to Stadium Bowl to take on Wilson this week but the speed of Wilson is concerning, especially after Lincoln dismantled them so thoroughly.

6.
Yelm Tornadoes (3-1)
Last week: #6 (No change)
Previous game: Yelm 26, Shelton 15
Next game: vs. Central Kitsap (2-2) – Tornadoes Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Still not sure what to think of Yelm. They actually trailed Shelton 8-7 at halftime before they made some adjustments in the second half and eventually took it to the Highclimbers. They have solid running backs in Aaron Rivera – 105 yards and two TDs – and freshman Brandon Thompson, who had a 84 yard touchdown run on the second play of the game.

7.
Black Hills (2-2)
Last week: #7 (No change)
Previous game: Black Hills 27, Aberdeen 17
Next game: vs. River Ridge (3-1) – Tumwater Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Nick Knittle had 106 yards receiving and a touchdown, returned a punt 74 yards to set up a touchdown and intercepted a pass to move the Wolves to 2-2 this season under new head coach Dominic Yarrington. They get River Ridge next in a game that is kind of a must win for both teams with the middle of the conference a complete toss up at this point.

8.
Tenino Beavers (1-3)
Last week: #10 (-2)
Previous game: Tenino 21, Forks 20 (3OT)
Next game: vs. Rainier (1-3) – Tenino Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Nobody likes to drive home from Forks with a loss on their shoulders. I can’t even imagine that ride on a school bus when you are wet, smelly and pissed off. Tenino found a way to avoid that hell with a triple overtime win and will take that momentum into a home game against Rainier.

9.
Timberline (1-3)
Last week: #9 (No change)
Previous game: Wilson 28, Timberline 26
Next game: @ Lincoln (4-0) – Lincoln Bowl, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Is there a more disappointing team in the area than Timberline? Three straight losses, but at least the offense has been actually moving the ball, they just need to put it in the endzone with more consistency. Next up is what should have been the game of the year in the 3A Narrows League – a date with the Abes at Lincoln Bowl.

10.
Rainier Mountaineers (1-3)
Last week: #8 (-2)
Previous game: Elma 46, Rainier 13
Next game: @ Tenino (1-3) – Tenino Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: What was a nice story in week one has turned into a three game losing streak. The Mountaineers are vastly improved but are struggling. They next get Tenino in a game that could be pretty entertaining.

11.
Capital Cougars (0-4)
Last week: #11 (No change)
Previous game: Tumwater 49, Capital 22
Next game: vs. Centralia (2-2) – Ingersoll Stadium – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Hard to have a young team and a ridiculously hard schedule the way that Capital has had over the first four weeks. Three 4A schools to start with and then their EvCo opener with Tumwater. But with that start out of the way, can the Cougars rally and get it going against the rest of their evenly matched conference opponents? Runs like this from Connor Kennedy will help (skip to the 2:14 mark)…

12.
Shelton Highclimbers (0-4)
Last week: #12 (No change)
Previous game: Yelm 26, Shelton 15
Next game: @ Foss (3-1) – Mount Tahoma Stadium, Tacoma – Friday, 7:00 PM

Notes: Well, the Highclimbers had their first lead of the year after Brian Nault blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown. They also recovered nicely on defense after being torched on an 84 yard touchdown run on the second play of the game and limited the Yelm offense to take an 8-7 lead into the half. But despite racking up decent yardage, they have been plagued by mistakes and penalties and have scored just three offensive touchdowns so far and they have the toughest part of their season still on the way with games against Foss, Lincoln, North Thurston and Timberline looming.

Concordia 4, Evergreen 0

Septi Danciu and Michael Chamberlain each scored two goals to lead Concordia to a 4-0 trouncing of Evergreen at South Sound Stadium. Danciu put the Cavaliers up for good in the third minute of the game when he curled a free kick around the wall and past Geoducks keeper Mauricio Sanchez.

With their goals, Danciu and Chamberlain each have nine goals this season and #12 Concordia moved to 7-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the Cascade Conference. Meanwhile, Evergreen falls to 2-2-1 in the CCC and 4-3-2 overall.

Today (10/1): Geoducks battle Concordia in CCC title game rematch

Men’s soccer

Evergreen vs. Concordia – South Sound Stadium – 7:00 PM

The big game tonight features the two teams that finished 1-2 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference last season and were picked to finish 1-2 in the CCC this season. However, both schools suffered shocking upset losses in the early going of the conference schedule and currently sit in second and fourth place. Concordia fell to Northwest 3-2 while the Geoducks traveled to Klamath Falls and were drilled 3-1 by Oregon Tech.

Nothing has come easy for Evergreen. They are 2-1-1 in the CCC and both wins were by just one goal including a double overtime win over Warner Pacific. Sophomore Willie Spurr leads the Geoducks with four goals in all games while senior Jeff Roland has scored a pair of goals.

On the other hand, since the #16 ranked Cavaliers lost to Northwest, they have taken it out on their opponents scoring 18 goals while allowing just two. Senior forward Septi Danciu has been ridiculous scoring seven goals and assisting on six more and their other senior forward, Michael Chamberlain, is right there with him with seven goals and three assists.

First kick is scheduled for 7:00 PM at South Sound Stadium. The game was moved to Lacey because of the massive amount of rain this week has made Evergreen Pitch unplayable, not to mention the roof of the tin shed will make it a much more enjoyable place to watch the game.

Girls soccer

River Ridge @ Black Hills – Tumwater Stadium – 7:00 PM
Olympia vs. Yelm – Ingersoll Stadium – 7:15 PM

How Not To Tweet 2: The Greensickening

Since I posted my first How Not To Tweet posts, my Twitter friendo with the mostest and 2013 graduate of a local high school that will be playing baseball at an NWAACC school this spring has been tweeting ridiculously stupid things up a storm, to the point of absurdity. It actually has become morbidly entertaining. This is really, really how not to tweet.

First up, the consequences of his big drunk Saturday night from the last post…

coach

Weed, weed, weed…

drugs

My use of Urban Dictionary and my Googling of weed terms is up by well over 100%…

knifers

I will admit, I’m learning a lot…

kindanappy

These tweets make me wonder about his storied high school baseball program…

w&b

Google reminded me that this is from a Dr. Dre and Eminem song. Apparently I had forgotten about Dre. Still…

violence

Man, is he repellent. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

This is yet another reminder, nothing you do online is private. His account is locked but I followed him before he locked it so I still see all of his updates.

I’m not outing this athlete because I don’t think it is my place to do so, especially since he thinks his account is private. He will eventually out himself to his athletic department or coaches, I’m sure. I’m just using him as a cautionary tale.

It is also important to mention that recreational marijuana use is legal in the state of Washington and it doesn’t appear that the NWAACC has drug testing. Perhaps the college he attends does, I can’t tell in a simple Google search.

I’m not being a prude, I know college kids are going to drink and smoke weed, it happens (though his use seems excessive. If it were anything other than weed, you’d be looking at someone that would be considered a drug addict). But you shouldn’t tweet these kinds of things, legal or not, athlete or not. It’s just stupid and will have a negative effect on your life, probably more than the drugs will.
