Saint Martin’s exploded for 21 runs on 25 hits in the game one of a GNAC doubleheader in Billings, Montana on Saturday afternoon. Chandler Tracy hit a pair of homeruns in the opener and was one of six players with three or more hits in the game. Zach Raczok went 4-for-5 and drove in eight runs including a three run homer in the sixth inning. Kaelen Hirashiki also collected four hits and Spencer Dodd, Zack Larsen, Carl Svanevik and Tracy each had three hits and each scored three runs.

In game two, Tracy tied the GNAC career home run record with a grand slam in a seven run second inning that proved to be the difference for the Saints in their 8-6 win to complete the sweep. Tracy, now with 30 career home runs, also tripled in the game. Raczok continued his hot hitting going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Behind the strong jamming of Jacky O Nastiest and Slamber Ella, the MIA Derby Girls made easy work of the Grunge City Rollers, 203-111, at the Bettie Bunker in Lacey on Saturday night.

It was Oly Sports first derby at the Bettie Bunker, the warehouse on Lacey Boulevard that the MIA Derby Girls and the JBLM Bettie Brigade share, and it has quickly and easily eclipsed Skateland! as the best place to watch derby in the Olympia area. It’s bright, open, has decent sound, a beer garden, concessions and has been nicely decorated with a big graffiti mural on one side and a red, white and blue derby mural on the other side.

The floor is a hard concrete warehouse floor and is very unforgiving on the skaters. Some of the tumbles that they took, especially in the fresh meat game that preceded the main event (MIA won 99-72), were particularly nasty and painful looking and made me uncomfortable watching their pain.

Bathroom facilities are a problem that will have to be worked out if the Bettie Bunker will continue to host events. Currently, the public restrooms are two honey buckets in the parking lot.

Also, parking is a bit of a problem. There is a small lot in the front of the building, one in the back of the building and there is a lot across Pacific Avenue at Pope John Paul II High School that was designated for derby parking. Unfortunately, you have to cross a field, the bike path and five lanes of Pacific to get to the lot and at night, it was unnerving, at best. The empty lot in front of the Bettie Bunker was blocked and closed to parking or else most people could have parked there.

No matter the problems, the Bettie Bunker is a good place to watch derby and it is obvious that MIA and JBLM are actively trying to make improvements to the facility for their skaters and fans. While the quality of roller derby played by the Oly Rollers at Skateland! is still far superior, their facility is not.

With a pair of wins on Friday afternoon, the Saint Martin’s softball team clinched a birth in the GNAC Tournament.

Game one was started in Billings three weeks ago and the 19-1 win was finished in Lacey. The Saints put 15 runs on the board before the game was delayed and the Saints continued to pour it on with four more runs. Sam Munger went 3-for-4 with five runs scored and three RBIs and Jackie Schmaeling and Mary Dettling each homered. Munger and Kaylee Lawson combined to give up just three hits and one run over five innings.

Christina DeMar’s RBI single in the fifth inning proved to be the game winner in the Saints 4-3 GNAC Tourney clinching win in game two. Munger, Schmaeling and Taviah Jenkins drove in the first three runs for the Saints. Munger gave up four hits and two earned runs over seven innings to pick up her 17th win of the season.

The GNAC Tournament gets underway on May 1st in Richland.

Can you help me bring the Tall Boys to Oly Town?

The EPLWA season is nearly ready to kick off and Olympia will be absent from the inaugural season. Emmett O’Connell at Olympia Time laments this fact and asks the question, “What is it about Olympia that has prevented anyone from coming forward with a team?” There are some barriers to entry that I have found, but it does surprise me that I’m the only one in town to seriously think about founding a team.

Here is my original plea for help. There have been some good developments since then and some setbacks but Oly Town FC is still a possibility at some point in the future…

eplwa-logo-06-500Today the Evergreen Premier League announced the seventh team accepted to the startup semi-pro soccer league slated to begin play in 2014. The Spokane Shadow joined Bellingham United, South Sound FC (Tacoma), Wenatchee United, Seattle Stars (Tukwila), WestSound FC (Silverdale) and FC Three Rivers (Tri-Cities) as inaugural members of the EPLWA and the league has suggested that there is a very good chance that they will cap the number of teams for the first season at eight instead of the previous 10 expected teams due to scheduling concerns and to keep the quality of the organizations high.

One area of the state that the EPLWA wanted to target was Olympia but no group has come forward and applied for entry to the league. I have been working to put together a bid and secure some financing but talks with an existing organization to take their team to the next level…
