NCAA Tournament West Regional
Humboldt State 6, Saint Martin’s 5
Saint Martin’s 8, Grand Canyon 5 – Recap from SMUSaints.com

In game one of the NCAA Division II West Regional in Arcata, California today, Saint Martin’s out homered heavy home run hitting Humboldt State on their home field but it wasn’t enough and the Saints fell to the Lumberjacks, 6-5. The loss was the first for the Saints in the double-elimination tournament and sent them to an elimination game later in the day.

Humboldt State opened the scoring right away putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. But the Saints answered back, first with a two run home run from Dani Wall in the top of the second and briefly took a 3-2 lead when Joslyn Eugenio drove in Lacey McGladrey in the third.

The ‘Jacks answered with three straight runs in the third and fourth innings including Dani Randall’s homer in the third and what proved to be the game winning run on a Courtney Hiatt single in the fourth.

Taviah Jenkins hit a two run shot in the sixth inning to cut the score to one run and Taylor Bakos singled and advanced to second on an error with no outs. Aubree Pocklington fouled out and Madi Davis struck out for the first two outs of the inning. Bakos was then thrown out on the plate trying to score from second on a single to left by McGladrey. The Saints stranded a runner at second in the seventh inning and Humboldt State held on to win 6-5.

In game two, Grand Canyon got a rematch with the Saints after eliminating UC-San Diego in the first game of the consolation bracket in the morning.

Facing elimination, Saint Martin’s got it going quickly scoring twice in the first inning on a Sam Munger single and a Wall ground out. In the second, Pocklington doubled to drive in Bakos and the Saints took a 3-0 lead.

The ‘Lopes would answer back in a big way with four runs in an error filled top of the third inning. But Jenkins hit her second home run of the day in the bottom half of the inning, a two run shot that put the Saints back on top, 5-3. McGladrey’s single in the fourth drove in Pocklington to put the Saints up 6-4.

Grand Canyon got a run back in the fifth but again Jenkins went deep in the bottom of the fifth, her third of the day, to give the Saints an 8-5 lead and they would hold on to end the ‘Lopes season and advance to play Humboldt State on Sunday at noon. The Saints will have to win two straight games against the ‘Jacks to advance to the Super Regionals.

The Saints are the #5 seed in the Western Regional and will face the #4 seed ‘Lopes at 1:30 PM. lopes1Grand Canyon
– The ‘Lopes come into their final Division II softball tournament (they will be transitioning to Division I after this season) at 39-17 overall, finishing fourth in the PacWest. They were ranked #17 in the nation before dropping out in the last poll after losing three of the last four games to Dixie State.

The ‘Lopes have a potent one-two punch in the circle with juniors Stephanie Pesquiera and Kiki Sepulveda. Pesquiera went 20-10 with a 1.74 ERA and 121 strikeouts this season as their #1 starter while Sepulveda went 13-4 with a 1.69 ERA. Humboldt State
– The Lumberjacks are the #5 ranked team in the nation at 47-12 overall this season and were winners of the CCAA regular season and tourament.

capitalBoys soccer

Capital @ Aberdeen – Stewart Field – 7:00 PM

Capital fought off elimination on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over River Ridge but now faces the winner of the 2A EvCo in another loser-out game in Aberdeen. The two teams met twice in the regular season. The Courgars handed the Bobcats their first loss of the season with a 3-2 overtime win on April 6th but Aberdeen avenged that loss with a convincing 5-1 win on the regular season’s last day. The winner moves on to face either Centralia or Mark Morris in a winner-to-state, loser-out game on Saturday.

Olympia fell into the consolation bracket with their 7-1 loss to Puyallup in Kent on Tuesday night. Leif Hansen went 2-for-3 and Joey Knight had a pair of hits and the lone RBI for the Bears. They will face Union on Wednesday at Heritage Park in Puyallup in a loser-out game.

3A West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament
Bonney Lake 4, Timberline 3 (9 innings)

Timberline’s season came to an end on Tuesday night at Heidelberg Park in Tacoma with a 4-3 extra innings loss to Bonney Lake. The Blazers were 17-5 this season but lost three straight games after winning the Narrows League regular season title.

2A District IV tournament
Tumwater 4, Hockinson 1
WF West 1, Capital 0

Garrett Terrell struck out eight and Anthony Correia went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored to lead Tumwater to a 4-1 win over Hockinson in the opening round of the 2A District IV tournament. The T-Birds move on to play Mark Morris tomorrow in a winner-to-state game at WF West High School in Chehalis at 6:00 PM.

Tom Kerr went six innings giving up just one run while striking out seven, but that one run was enough for WF West to knock Capital into the consolation bracket with a 1-0 win. The Cougars face a loser-out game tomorrow in Centralia.

2B District IV tournament
Mossyrock 10, Northwest Christian 5

Northwest Christian’s season came to an end with a 10-5 loss to Mossyrock in Adna.

Boys soccer

2A District IV tournament (loser-out)
Capital 1, River Ridge 0

Capital barely kept their season alive tonight with a 1-0 win over River Ridge at Ingersoll Stadium. The Cougars will travel to Aberdeen on Thursday for another loser-out game.

Narrows League regular season
Mount Tahoma 2, North Thurston 1
Gig Harbor 6, Timberline 0
Bellarmine 5, Olympia 0

North Thurston’s Kenny Heo scored a late goal but Mount Tahoma held on for a 2-1 win at South Sound Stadium. The Rams’ loss, combined with Shelton’s 3-3 tie with Wilson, means that the top four teams in the 3A Narrows League finished with seven wins. Wilson finishes at 7-3-2 while Mount Tahoma, Shelton and North Thurston are all 7-4-1. Mount Tahoma swept North Thurston, while the Rams split with Shelton, and Shelton and Mount Tahoma split. More than likely, this means that the seeds break down like this for districts: #1 Wilson, #2 Mount Tahoma, #3 Shelton, #4 North Thurston. If that is the case, the Rams would play Bonney Lake in Auburn on Saturday night.

High school softball

Tumwater 15, River Ridge 0
Centralia 17, Capital 1

For the second straight day, Tumwater knocked off River Ridge 15-0. And for the second straight day, Kayleen Glasgo picked up the win in the circle and went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs.

4A West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament
Olympia vs. Puyallup – Art Wright Field, Kent – 7:00 PM

3A West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament
Timberline vs. Bonney Lake – Heidelberg Park, Tacoma – 7:00 PM

Timberline comes into the district tournament on a two game losing streak. Their 14-2 non-conference loss to South Kitsap snapped a 14 game winning streak and was followed by a 5-3 loss to North Thurston in the Narrows League championship game. That loss dropped them into a loser-out game against Bonney Lake at Heidelberg Park in Tacoma at 7:00 PM. The Blazers and Panthers met once this season already with Timberline taking a 7-6 win in Lacey on March 15th.
