Saturday scoreboard: Saints softball season (probably) ends

College softball

Saint Martin’s 8, Northwest Nazarene 5
Northwest Nazarene 10, Saint Martin’s 2 – More from SMUSaints.com

With their game one win and Montana State Billings’ loss to Simon Fraser, Saint Martin’s got to within one game of earning the GNAC’s automatic NCAA tournament bid, but the Saints’ best season likely came to an end in the first inning of game two when Northwest Nazarene pushed five runs across and cruised to a 10-2 victory.

The Saints finish third in the GNAC at 23-13 and 33-18-1 overall, a 24 win improvement in Rick Noren’s second season at the helm. They still have a very slim chance of being one of five teams to receive an at-large bid into the West Regional.

College baseball

Northwest Nazarene 11, Saint Martin’s 4
Northwest Nazarene 5, Saint Martin’s 3 – More from NNUSports.com

In game one, Northwest Nazarene’s first four hitters went 11-for-17 with seven RBI and eight runs scored as the Crusaders opened up an 11-0 lead on the Saint Martin’s and cruised to the 11-4 victory. Chandler Tracy led the way for the Saints going 3-for-4.

In game two, the Saints had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning (the last inning of the game in game two of a doubleheader) but Crusaders’ reliever Sean McDonald struck out Tracy looking to get the save. The Saints opened the scoring with a run in the second inning but River Ridge alum Jon Matos erased the lead with a three run homer in the third. The Saints answered back with two runs in the fourth but the Crusaders scored two of their own in the fourth and held on for the 5-3 win.

The sweep flip flops the Saints and Crusaders in the GNAC standings. Coming into the game, Saint Martin’s was in second but the losses drop them to 10-14 and tied for third. Meanwhile, Northwest Nazarene jumps to second place at 12-14.

Thursday scoreboard: Saints still alive; T-Birds stay undefeated

College softball

Saint Martin’s 5, Montana State Billings 3 – More from SMUSaints.com
Saint Martin’s 11, Montana State Billings 8 – 9 innings

Saint Martin’s came up huge with their sweep of GNAC leader Montana State Billings in Billings on Thursday afternoon. The Saints had to win to keep their GNAC title hopes alive and after winning game one 5-3, the Saints found themselves down 7-4 in the fourth inning of game two. Morgan Klemm hit a three run homerun to tie the game and then took an 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh but couldn’t hold the lead in the bottom of the seventh and the Yellowjackets tied the game at 8-8. The Saints broke through with three runs in the top of the seventh and held on for the win.

The sweep brings the Saints within two games of the Yellowjackets with just two conference games left to play for both teams. To get the GNAC’s NCAA bid, the Saints have to sweep Northwest Nazarene and hope that Simon Fraser can sweep in Billings on Saturday.

Today (4/26): Capital, North Thurston soccer; Saints softball must win on road

The 3A Narrows League first place Capital Cougars soccer team welcomes Foss to Ingersoll Stadium tonight at 7:00 PM. Capital dominated in the first meeting between the two teams winning 4-1 on March 27th. Bryce Joling and Joey Geraci each scored two goals for the Cougars in that game.

North Thurston soccer hosts Centralia at South Sound Stadium at 7:00 PM. The two teams met on March 29th and behind two Guillermo Martinez goals, Centralia won 3-1. Without Nick Salazar’s services, Bin Hasan scored the Rams’ lone goal.

The Saint Martin’s softball team is in a must win situation when they take on GNAC first place Montana State Billings in a doubleheader this afternoon. The Saints must sweep the Yellowjackets today and sweep Northwest Nazarene tomorrow and hope Billings drops their final two games to win the GNAC regular season championship. The two teams met in early March with the Yellowjackets taking three of four games. Live stats are available here.
