Today (5/1): 2A EvCo soccer wraps up regular season; Narrows League baseball playoffs underway
I’m getting ready to head to Kansas City for the rest of the week so I’ll have to keep this short. While there, though, Oly Sports will continue in normal fashion since my broken ankle will keep me a lot less busy than I originally planned.
On the schedule tonight, the last regular season soccer games in the 2A EvCo including River Ridge playing for a playoff spot. And the Narrows League baseball playoffs get underway in Tacoma…

Coaching vacancies: Tafoya out at Timberline; Summers at Black Hills
The Olympian reports today that Mike Tafoya has resigned as head boys basketball coach at Timberline high School. Tafoya will remain a teacher at Timberline and his reason for leaving basketball is to focus more on his teaching duties. the Blazers went 7-12 overall and just 1-8 in the 3A Narrows League this season.
Timberline is the second Olympia area school with a boys basketball coaching vacancy. Jamie Berg resigned as head coach at Black Hills last month.
Also last week, Meg Wochnick reported that Black Hills girls soccer coach Lisa Summers stepped down. Summers coached the Wolves in 14 of their 15 seasons and led them to their best record this last fall.
Today (4/30): Surprise, it’s raining
As of 12:00 PM, I have not heard of any of these games being postponed. This late in the season, I’d assume they will try as hard as they can to get them in.

Saint Martin’s 8, Northwest Nazarene 5
Northwest Nazarene 10, Saint Martin’s 2 – More from SMUSaints.com
With their game one win and Montana State Billings’ loss to Simon Fraser, Saint Martin’s got to within one game of earning the GNAC’s automatic NCAA tournament bid, but the Saints’ best season likely came to an end in the first inning of game two when Northwest Nazarene pushed five runs across and cruised to a 10-2 victory.
The Saints finish third in the GNAC at 23-13 and 33-18-1 overall, a 24 win improvement in Rick Noren’s second season at the helm. They still have a very slim chance of being one of five teams to receive an at-large bid into the West Regional.

Friday scoreboard: Saints baseball swept in Nampa
College baseball
Northwest Nazarene 11, Saint Martin’s 4
Northwest Nazarene 5, Saint Martin’s 3 – More from NNUSports.com
In game one, Northwest Nazarene’s first four hitters went 11-for-17 with seven RBI and eight runs scored as the Crusaders opened up an 11-0 lead on the Saint Martin’s and cruised to the 11-4 victory. Chandler Tracy led the way for the Saints going 3-for-4.
In game two, the Saints had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning (the last inning of the game in game two of a doubleheader) but Crusaders’ reliever Sean McDonald struck out Tracy looking to get the save. The Saints opened the scoring with a run in the second inning but River Ridge alum Jon Matos erased the lead with a three run homer in the third. The Saints answered back with two runs in the fourth but the Crusaders scored two of their own in the fourth and held on for the 5-3 win.
The sweep flip flops the Saints and Crusaders in the GNAC standings. Coming into the game, Saint Martin’s was in second but the losses drop them to 10-14 and tied for third. Meanwhile, Northwest Nazarene jumps to second place at 12-14.
