Capital’s Jason Monda goes to the Phillies in the 6th round

Capital High School alum and current Washington State junior outfielder Jason Monda was drafted in the sixth round with the 181st pick by the Philadelphia Phillies. Monda hit .294 with seven home runs for the Cougs this season and spent the 2012 summer wood-bat season with the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League.
Here is what the Twitter-verse is saying about the Monda pick…
#Phillies pick Jason Monda could be a very tough sign. I heard he wants to pursue medical school. We’ll see… #mlbdraft

Congrats to a great friend and teammate in Jason Monda on getting drafted by the Phillies in the 6th round today. #mlbdraft

Jason Monda was drafted by the Phillies in the 6th round today. But there’s no guarantee he’ll sign.
— Christian Caple (@ChristianCaple) June 7, 2013
Jason Monda is the highest Coug to be drafted since the Marlins took Adam Conley in the second round two years ago.
— CougCenter (@CougCenter) June 7, 2013
Here is what MLB.com says about Monda…
“Monda is a projectable college outfielder who hits for average and should add power down the line. Monda, out of Washington State, has shown that he can handle center but might have to move to a corner as he fills out, a place where his glove could be plus. He has average speed on the basepaths but possesses great instincts that allow his speed to play up. If Monda can add power, then he could become a solid everyday player in the Majors.”
Now the question is, will he sign or return to Washington State for his senior season?
Baseball alumni: Smith wins NAIA title; Boyle and Weiks open NCAAs; Calhoun’s squad in NJCAA title

Black Hills alum Ryan Smith and his Faulkner University Eagles won the NAIA championship on Thursday night with an 11-4 win over Lewis & Clark State on LCSC’s home field in Lewiston, Idaho. Faulkner went 56-11 this season and was the #1 ranked team in the nation. Smith, a junior that pitched two years at Chemeketa Community College before transferring to the Montgomery, Alabama school, appeared in nine games for the Eagles posting a 2-0 record with a 2.52 ERA in five starts.
In other college baseball post-season news, two area high school baseball players open the NCAA Division I regionals tomorrow. River Ridge alum Brandon Boyle and South Alabama will take on Mercer in Starkville, Mississippi at noon while Capital grad Jourdan Weiks and the University of San Francisco will face Rice at 2:00 PM in Eugene, Oregon. Both games can be seen on ESPN3.
Boyle, a junior transfer from Lower Columbia Community College, has made 19 appearances and four starts for the Jaguars posting a 2-2 record striking out 36 batters over 45 2/3 innings of work. South Alabama is 42-18 so far this season and is the #2 seed in the Starkville regional, hosted by Mississippi State, the #1 seed. Mercer is the #3 seed while Central Arkansas is the #4.
Weiks had his struggles for the Dons in his sophomore season hitting just .159 in just 44 at-bats. He started 10 times and appeared in 34 games scoring 13 runs for the Dons. USF went 34-22 this season and are the #3 seed in the Eugene regional where they will face the #2 seed Owls. Oregon is the #1 seed and will face #4 South Dakota State on Friday.
One last local post-season note: Nick Calhoun, the incoming head coach for the Hawks Prairie Cardinals of the Puget Sound Collegiate League, is an assistant coach for Murray State College in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. With a 6-0 win over Heartland on Thursday night, the Aggies moved into the National Junior College Athletic Association championship game on Saturday. Calhoun’s squad is 45-22 this season and will take on either Madison College or LSU-Eunice for the title.

Kellan O’Neill uncorked a scorching shot along the ground from just inside the box in the 20th minute that beat the Tyee keeper to give Capital a 1-0 lead. Despite the early Cougars goal, the Totems were the aggressors from the beginning and eventually capitalized scoring three times in a 15 minute span to knock off Capital, 4-1, in the first round of the 2A state tournament at Highline Memorial Stadium in Burien.
Down 1-0 deep into the first half, Tyee finally broke through with the equalizer after numerous chances throughout the first 39 minutes. With just 1:19 remaining in the half, Osvaldo Lopez turned from the far right side and put a shot between three Capital defenders that found far side of the goal. The two teams went to the half tied at one apiece.
Tyee’s Hamidou Kante broke free on the right side 12 minutes into the second half and caught Capital keeper Van Soderberg out of position. Soderberg hammered Kante just inside the box and the Totems were awarded a penalty kick. Liam Maginniss buried the shot for what would prove to be the game winning goal.
A minute later, Kante scored an easy goal off of a deflected Eduardo Pelayo shot to give the Totems a 3-1 lead. Lopez scored another goal with just over five minutes left to play and finished out the game with a 4-1 win, ending the Cougars season.
Capital finishes the season at 11-8-1. The Cougars were the last boys soccer team from the Olympia area still alive.

Capital vs. Tyee – Highline Memorial Stadium, Burien – 7:30 PM
Capital, the last remaining boys soccer team from the Olympia area, opens state tournament play when they face Tyee at Highline Memorial Stadium in Burien tonight at 7:00 PM.
The Cougars finished second in the 2A EvCo at 8-4 but lost their first round game in the District IV tournament to Mark Morris. An upset of EvCo champion Aberdeen and a 2-0 win over Centralia in the consolation bracket led them to third place and a birth in the state tourney.
Tyee finished second in the 2A Seamount at 10-3-1 behind undefeated Hazen and won their only district game 3-1 over White River to advance as the #3 seed out of the West Central District. The Totems finished the season 12-4-1.
The computer rankings of ScoreCzar have predicted that Tyee will beat Capital 2-1.
