Wednesday scoreboard: Clippers nip Raiders; T-Birds, Rams nab non-league wins

Men’s soccer

SPSCC 3, Pierce 2 – Box score

Justyn Taylor scored a pair of goals in the second half to lift South Puget Sound to a 3-2 win over Pierce College at Heritage Recreation Center in Puyallup on Wednesday afternoon. Mike Rancipher scored the first goal for the Clippers at the 46th minute and Taylor followed it up with a goal in the 48th minute and another in the 82nd minute. Alex Cleary made four saves in the win. SPSCC is now 2-7 in the NWAACC South Division.

Freshman Kelli Bannerman broke a scoreless tie in the 74th minute and Abby McFaul added an insurance goal seven minutes later to give Saint Martin’s a 2-0 win over Northwest Nazarene. Gina Cardenas made two saves in goal for the Saints to preserve the shutout. SMU is now 2-4 in the GNAC and 3-6 overall.

Saint Martin’s held the #1 ranked team in the nation scoreless through the first half before finally allowing a goal in the first two minutes of the second half. The Clan would add an crucial insurance goal in the 68th minute and the Saints cut the lead to one when Rene Caro scored in the 83rd. But it was too little, too late as Simon Fraser held on for a 2-1 victory at SMU Soccer Field. The Saints fall to 3-2-1 in the GNAC.

The College of Idaho picked up just their second win of the season as the Evergreen men continue to struggle in Cascade Conference play. The Yotes got on the board in just the seventh minute and added a goal in the 64th minute before Sebastian Lyons scored for the Geoducks. Playing with just ten men after goalkeeper Mauricio Sanchez was shown a red card, Evergreen could not get the equalizer and dropped a 2-1 decision. They are now 2-3-1 in the CCC.

Bellarmine 3, Olympia 1 (25-9, 22-25, 25-12, 25-12)

#1 ranked Bellarmine dropped #4 Olympia three sets to one in Tacoma on Wednesday afternoon. It was the first loss of the season for the Bears who now sit in second place at 5-1 in the 4A Narrows League while the Lions are a game ahead of them at 6-0 and 8-0 overall.

SPSCC vs. Peninsula – The RAC – 4:00 PM

The 2-0 South Puget Sound men’s soccer team makes their home debut today at The RAC against Peninsula. The Clippers got two shutouts at the NWAACC Friendlies by goalkeeper Cody Wilkes, a freshman from Shelton and a pair of goals from another Shelton alum, freshman Alex Nunez. Taylor Weatherly, Mike Rancipher and Jair Cisneros all also got on the board in SPSCC’s first two games.

Peninsula comes into the game ranked #11 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches of America Association at 5-0-1 and is lead by Alex Martinez, a 6-2 sophomore who already has eight goals and three assists this season and Ashkanov Apollon, a 6-0 freshman that has six goals and four assists in the early going.

Alex Nunez scored twice in the first half and Cody Wilkes recorded his second shutout to lead South Puget Sound to a 3-0 win over Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday morning in an NWAACC friendly at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.

Jairo Cisneros scored an insurance goal in the second half as the Clippers ran their record to 2-0 in the early going of the season.

The SPSCC men’s soccer team opened up the 2013 season with a 2-0 win over Rogue Community College in an NWAACC friendly at the Starfire complex in Tukwila. Taylor Weatherly got the Clippers on the board in the 90th minute and Mike Rancipher added an insurance goal in stoppage time. Goalkeeper Cody Wilkes made four saves.
