Down two sets to Lewis & Clark, Evergreen, looking for their first win since 2010, came storming back to take the next two sets before falling in the final set of the Red Lion Evergreen Invitational. Cassidy Watkins had 27 kills for the Geoducks in the loss.

Evergreen’s Rayna Murphy scored the equalizer in the 87th minute and the Geoducks escaped Newberg, Oregon with 1-1 draw with George Fox University. Kaitlin MacKenzie made five saves in goal for the Geoducks.

Metro State scored two goals in the first six minutes of play to knock off Saint Martin’s 4-1 in Denver on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners went up 3-1 in the 34th minute before the Saints finally got on the board before the end of the first half on CJ Chu’s first goal of the season.
Juan Loza gave South Puget Sound a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of their home opener at the RAC but Everett scored two goals in the second half including the game winner in the 78th minute to knock off the Clippers 2-1.

Blake Moreland’s goal in the 44th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Saint Martin’s men’s soccer team became the first Olympia area college fall sports team to earn a win with their 3-0 defeat of Colorado Christian. Dylan Gaydosh scored twice, 30 seconds apart, early in the second half to cement the victory.

Sunday scoreboard: Senators to GFI semis; Saints fall in Phoenix
Baseball (Grand Forks Invitational)
Thurston County Senators 4, San Diego Stars 3
Maxx Garrett hit a go ahead home run in the fourth inning and the Thurston County Senators held on to win 4-3 over the San Diego Stars in the quarterfinals of the Grand Forks Invitational. Kyle Baskett drove in two runs and Parker Guinn went 4-for-4 for the Senators. Damon Porter got the win and Nate O’Bryan pitched a scoreless ninth to get the save.
The Senators move on to the semifinals on Monday morning at 8:30 AM against the winner of the late game tonight between the Trail Orioles and Team Canada. Live stats for the game can be found here.

Kai Van Sickle scored the game winning touchdown with 16 seconds left to lift the #2 ranked Capital Cougars to a 29-22 victory over the Newport Knights in Bellevue. Van Sickle scored three times, once in the first quarter, another in the second and then again in the fourth with the game winner.

Alex Vukic scored the only goal of the game on a header in the ninth minute and the Menlo Oaks held on for the next 81 minutes to defeat Evergreen 1-0.

Cal State Stanislaus launched 17 shots to Saint Martin’s four and the Warriors knocked off the Saints 3-0 in the season opener for both squads. Goals from Karenee Demery and Alexia Poon put the Warriors up 2-0 by the 25th minute and Bernie Bettencourt finished it off in the 88th minute.

Today (8/30): Saints and Geoducks soccer at home; Capital football opens in Bellevue
The college soccer regular season gets underway in earnest today with a pair of games at Saint Martin’s and Evergreen.
This afternoon, the Saint Martin’s women host Cal State Stanislaus. The Warriors are the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions and went 11-4-6 in 2011. First touch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at the SMU Soccer Field.
Following the Saints game, head across town to Evergreen where the Geoduck men host Menlo College at 5:00 PM. Menlo is coming off of a California Pacific Conference championship and a trip to the NAIA national championships in 2011.
And the high school football season kicks off this evening when Capital travels to Bellevue to take on Newport at 7:00 PM. Capital is the #2 ranked 2A team in The News Tribune’s coaches poll released yesterday while Newport was unranked by the coaches in the 4A poll.

Wednesday scoreboard: Senators blank Honkers; Clippers lose friendly; Saints downed by Lutes

Thurston County Senators 3, Northwest Honkers 0
Nate O’Bryan pitched eight shutout innings and Kyle Basket went 3-for-4 with a two run homer to lead the Thurston County Senators to a 3-0 win over the Northwest Honkers in the first game of the Grand Forks Invitiational in Grand Forks, British Columbia. Shane Schoeneberg, Mac Acker and Eric O’Bryan each had two hits and Damon Porter pitched the ninth to get the save.
Next up for the Senators after an off day tomorrow are the Trail Orioles on Friday at 2:00 PM and then close out pool play on Saturday against the San Diego Stars at 5:00 PM. All games can be followed live on the GFI website.

Columbia Basin 3, SPSCC 1
In the final day of the NWAACC’s preseason friendlies at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila, the South Puget Sound men’s soccer team dropped their second game 3-1 to Columbia Basin. Kellen Church scored the Clippers’ goal while Richard Renteria scored twice for the Hawks.
SPSCC opens the regular season next Wednesday at Peninsula College before their home opener on Saturday, September 8th against Everett CC at 2:00 PM at the RAC.

Today (8/29): Saints face PLU in volleyball opener

The Saint Martin’s volleyball team gets their season underway tonight with a scrimmage against PLU at Marcus Pavilion.
The Saints were picked to finish eighth in the GNAC this season after finishing seventh last season with a 5-13 league record and a 7-18 overall record. The Saints are led by two seniors, middle blockers Katy Ferguson and Teilissa Tua and freshman-of-the-year outside hitter and Capital graduate Kristyn Ross.
This is an extremely young Saints squad with 13 of 17 roster spots taken up by freshmen or sophomores including Northwest Christian’s Kelsey Minton, Tumwater’s Nicole Grisham, North Thurston’s Julia Wabinga and River Ridge’s Halee Hernandez.
Game time tonight at Marcus Pavilion is at 6:00 PM.
