Saturday scoreboard: Trinity spoils Evergreen’s opener.

Trinity Lutheran 3, Evergreen 1 – More from Evergreen athletics
In the season opener for both schools, a Sergio Martinez goal put Trinity Lutheran ahead 1-0 in the seventh minute and Amin Lemrini found the back of the net in the 60th minute to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead that proved insurmountable in their 3-1 defeat of Evergreen on Saturday morning.
Brady Espinoza scored the Geoducks’s first goal of the season on a free kick to cut the lead to a goal but Trinity put it away in the 83rd minute on a goal by Sekou Rolland.
Today (8/18): Evergreen soccer kicks off, Saints women scrimmage, Underground Derby doubleheader, Racing
The Evergreen fall athletics season kicks off on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM with a men’s soccer game against Trinity Lutheran at Evergreen Pitch.
The Geoducks were picked to finish fifth in the eight team Cascade Collegiate Conference this season as they return four of their top five scorers from a team that went 5-11-2 overall last season. Senior midfielder George Bundy scored four goals and had four assists last season to lead all returning Geoducks in points. Fellow seniors Josh Flavin and Brandon Wood each also scored four goals last season while yet another senior Josh Strasser added two goals and two assists.
Evergreen and Trinity Lutheran met twice last season with Trinity taking both games by a combined score 0f 6-0.
And if that isn’t enough college soccer for you on Saturday, head over to the SMU Soccer Field for the Saint Martin’s women’s second scrimmage of the young season. The Saints take on NAIA powerhouse Concordia at 4:00 PM. The Cavaliers were the national runners-up in NAIA Division II last season posting a 20-5-1 record, are the unanimous choice to win the Cascade Collegiate Conference this season and are currently ranked #2 in the nation.
When you have had your fill of soccer, head over to Skateland! for an Underground Derby doubleheader featuring the UDL’s Death Dealing Dolls taking on the Spokanibals followed by a Grease themed bout featuring members of the other UDL teams playing as the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds.
Doors to the Dog Days of Summer bouts open at 6:00 PM with derby action getting underway at 6:30. Tickets to the doubleheader are $15 and can be purchased at the doors.
And finally, it should be a really nice evening to head out to South Sound Speedway for the super late model 100, street stocks, bumblebees, WMRA and NW Pro-4 Trucks. Tickets are $16 for adults at the speedway. Qualifying begins at 5:00 PM and racing starts at 6:30.
Thursday scoreboard: Saints dropped by Spartans

Trinity Western 1, Saint Martin’s 0
NCAA rules prohibit schools from reporting scores and stats from preseason scrimmages but since Trinity Western is a Canadian non-NCAA member, they reported that their Spartans beat Saint Martin’s 1-0 in today’s season opener. Jess King scored the lone goal for the Spartans.
Today (8/16): Saints women’s soccer kicks off fall sports
The Saints hope All-GNAC 2nd team and freshman-of-the-year midfielder Ashley Richardson can help them find more offense.
Are you ready for some football?
The fall sports season gets underway today when the Saint Martin’s women’s soccer team takes on the Trinity Western Spartans of Langley, British Columbia in a preseason scrimmage at what promises to be a hot SMU Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
The Saints return 18 players from last season including ten starters. Despite having the most returning players in the GNAC, the Saints were picked to finish 7th out of eight teams in the preseason poll, which might not be surprising when you consider the Saints went 4-12-2 and only scored ten goals last season en route to a 6th place finish.
The Saints do return players that scored eight of their ten goals last season. Ashley Richardson, Sasha Dini and Hanna Massee scored two goals apiece and Olympia High School graduate Sammi Thompson returns for her junior season after scoring once in her sophomore year. Richardson, Dini, Massee and defender Molly Campbell were all named to the all-GNAC team in 2011 and Richardson was named conference freshman-of-the-year.
Seattle Pacific was the unanimous pick to win the GNAC again this season. The Falcons have won or shared the GNAC title in eight of the last ten seasons.

Puget Sound Collegiate League leaders: Hitting
The Puget Sound Collegiate League baseball season is coming down to the wire with just three regular season games left. So let’s take a look at the league leaders. First, the hitters.
The most impressive line this season belongs to Olympia High School and Green River Community College’s Chris Womac of the West Olympia Linx. Womac is tied for third with 24 hits and third in singles with 20, second in walks with 19 and leads the league in on base percentage (.536), OPS (1.031) and batting average (.387). He also leads the league with 14 stolen bases and is tied for first with 17 runs scored.
Saint martin’s Chandler Tracy is continuing his outstanding end to the Saints season in the PSCL. Tracy, a member of the Hawks Prairie Cardinals, is tied for third in hits (24), second in triples (3), first in RBI (16), third in runs scored, fifth in OBP (.427), first in slugging (.536) second in OPS (.963) and second in batting average (.348).
And it’s hard to look past the seasons of Kyle Thomson, Devin Ferguson, Naoki Imoto and may others.

Poole, Ward, Bain named to IBL all-star teams
One Saint Martin’s alum and two members of the Olympia Reign were named International Basketball League all-stars on Monday. Blake Poole was named to the first team and barely missed out on the MVP award in leading the Bellingham Slam to the IBL championship and the Reign’s Mike Ward and Gjio Bain were named to the second team after leading the Reign to the IBL semifinals. All three players will represent the IBL in the Southern California Summer Pro League July 24-29th.
Former Saint Blake Poole earned first team honors after averaging 18.7 points per game and 13.2 rebounds per game. In his second season with the Slam, the 6’5″ center had 15 double-doubles out of 20 games this season including a 24 point, 22 rebound, six assist game against the Yamhill HighFlyers on June 23rd and a 23 point, 15 rebound, seven assist game against the Portland Chinooks in the IBL championship game on July 8th. This winter, Poole will return to Germany for a second season but with a new team, BG Topstar Leitershofen. He starred for BG Dorsten in his first German Pro-B season averaging 14.9 ppg and 12.9 rpg.
In his fourth season with the Olympia Reign, Mike Ward was the team’s most consistent player this season, averaging 20.7 points per game, 6.2 board per game and 4.2 assists per game from the guard position. Ward, an Evergreen alum, had his best game on May 18th when he scored 39 points against the Portland Chinooks. Ward also came up big in two late season games against the Edmonton Energy. Ward had 30 points, six boards and seven assists in an overtime win to close the regular season and 27 points, five boards and six assists in an playoff opening round upset of the Energy.
After joining the Reign on June 22nd during their trip to Orlando, Gjio Bain solidified their center position by scoring 15 points per game and hauling in 12.8 rebounds per game and the Reign went 4-2, their best stretch of the season, in his six games with the team. Bain, a seven footer from Southern Miss, had averaged 8.8 ppg and 8.9 rpg as a member of the Orlando Venom.
Andre Murray of the Vancouver Volcanoes was named MVP and Bellingham’s Morris Anderson was named Defensive Player of the Year. The full list of honorees can be found here.
Lubin’s season ends; Sounders U23s head to Cali
The Kitsap Pumas will not defend their title as PDL champs this season after a 2-1 playoff loss to the Portland Timbers U23s at Gladstone High School in Gladstone, Oregon reports goalWA.net. The Pumas ended their season at 10-5-2
Saint Martin’s alum Zac Lubin won nine games for the Pumas this season and tied for second in the PDL with seven shutouts. Lubin, the keeper for the Saints’ GNAC conference championship team in 2009, finished his second season with the Pumas. Last season he appeared in just two games backing up current Seattle Sounders FC keeper Bryan Meredith before taking over in goal this season.
Representing the PDL’s Northwest Division in the western regionals will be the Timbers U23s and the team that called Tumwater Stadium home for one game this season, the Sounders U23s. The Sounders will face FC Tucson on Saturday in Ventura, California while the host Ventura County Fusion will try to take down the Timbers.
