Today (10/18): Saints get rematch with Falcons; Hawks and T-Birds tangle

Ashley Richardson equalized but the Falcons scored the winner with 10 seconds left in 2OT on Sept. 29th
Big game for the Saint Martin’swomen’s soccer team today when they play host to Seattle Pacific. It’s a rematch of a game in Seattle that saw the Falcons pull out the victory in the final 10 seconds of double overtime, 2-1, part of an eight match unbeaten streak that SPU is currently riding.
The Saints are still in the hunt for a GNAC playoff spot currently sitting in fifth place at 4-6. The top four teams make the GNAC playoffs at the Starfire complex in Tukwila beginning on November 1st and the Saints are chasing Western Oregon (5-4-1) for that final playoff spot.
First touch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at the SMU Soccer Field.
In American football action, a huge 2A Evergreen Conference game between Tumwater and River Ridge kicks off at 7:00 PM at South Sound Stadium.
The T-Birds are riding a six game winning streak after dropping their opener to Shelton and have knocked off Timberline, Capital, WF West and North Thurston in the process and are currently ranked #1 in the Oly Sports power rankings. Andrew Brown has been unstoppable for the T-Birds on all sides of the game and River Ridge will have their hands full stopping his rushing and special teams prowess.
But River Ridge sits there just behind the T-Birds in the EvCo standings and that at times explosive offense could always go off. But the Hawks had their five game winning streak snapped on Friday by WF West and barely got past 0-7 Centralia a week before and have given up 78 points over the last two games, worrisome results when facing this confusing T-Birds wing-T offense.
My pick: Tumwater 45, River Ridge 28, in a game that is closer than the final score reflects.
And don’t forget all the girl’s soccer and volleyball action going on all around town….

The win moves the Geoducks to 8-2 in CCC play, good enough for second place in conference.
South Puget Sound was mere minutes away from the second win of the season but Pierce scored twice in the final three minutes to escape The RAC with a 3-2 win.
The Clippers took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Jovanny Andrade and Giovanni Torres in the 26th and 28th minutes respectively. But Pierce answered back with a goal of their own in the 30th and the score remained 2-1 until Matthew Solis scored the equalizer in the 87th minute and Christian Rath scored the game winner in the 89th minute for the Raiders.
The heartbreaking loss drops the Clippers to 1-8 in league and 1-13-1 overall this season.

Today (10/13): Geoducks try to topple #18 Concordia; Saints host Jackets
The #18 ranked NAIA Division II men’s soccer team in the nation comes to town today when Evergreen plays host to Concordia at Evergreen Pitch. The two teams currently sit 1-2 in the Cascade Collegiate League standings, the Cavaliers are 8-0 while the Geoducks are a game behind at 7-1.
The two teams met on September 25th at Tuominen Yard in Portland and Concordia walked away with a 2-0 victory. Two internationals scored for the Cavaliers, Sam Carmichael of Australia and Gerrit Hamann of Germany. Collin Harlow started the game in goal for the Geoducks but has not started a game since. Mauricio Sanchez, a transfer from Wenatchee Valley has posted two shutouts since he was allowed to play following some confusion on the Evergreen athletic department’s part about his eligibility and Mitch Treend played the first 75 minutes in the 2-0 win over Northwest Christian.
First touch out at Evergreen is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
Across town at the same time, the Saint Martin’s men’s soccer team welcomes Montana-State Billings to Lacey.
The Saints have really struggled this season and are just 1-7 in GNAC play and 2-10 overall but did take #12 Seattle Pacific to double overtime before dropping a heartbreaker last Saturday. The Yellowjackets haven’t been a whole lot better sitting at 3-4-1 in conference play. The two teams met on September 20th in Billings and the Yellowjackets handed the Saints a 3-0 loss.
First touch today at Saint Martin’s is at 1:00 PM.

Rochester at Forks – No report
Shelton’s Ralph Kinne appeared to score the go ahead touchdown with three minutes remaining in the game but a North Thurston defender ripped the ball loose and fell on the ball in the end zone. After a discussion, the officials ruled that Kinne fumbled and the Rams took over on the 20 yard line and ran out the clock with a pair of first downs to take home the 21-20 victory in a battle of undefeated 3A Narrows League rivals.
Deshon Bell scored two touchdowns for the Highclimbers, the first a ten yard run to open the scoring in the first quarter and a 60 yarder in the second quarter. Ralph Kinne also scored on a 64 yard touchdown run and finished with 190 yards.
But with every big run Shelton produced, the Rams fought back with long drives. Mo Manning scored once for the Rams and Bobby Cervantes also scored on an end around play. The final touchdown was scored in the second quarter on a one yard run that Shelton defenders thought that they had recovered a fumble on the play.
With the win, the Rams move to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the 3A Narrows League and will take on fellow undefeated Narrows League rival Timberline. The Highclimbers fall to 6-1 and 3-1 in league. They next get 0-7 Mount Tahoma before a final week matchup with Timberline.
