Green River 79, SPSCC 59 – Box score

South Puget Sound’s Jamey Smith scored 22 points and AJ Fuller added 16 but the Clippers hit just six field goals in the first half and couldn’t come back from a 12 point halftime deficit falling to Green River 79-59.

The Clippers rallied in the early minutes of the second half but Green River took advantage of an untimely technical foul called on Johlani Porchia and their lead was built back to 14. After that, it was all Green River as their lead quickly ballooned to over twenty points and the Gators never looked back.

Green River outrebounded SPSCC 46-20 led by Kendal Brown’s nine boards to go along with his game high 25 points. Kortney Darby added 21 in the win.

Saint Martin’s O’Neill, Haskey named GNAC players of the week

O'Neill

Roger O’Neill

Saint Martin’s Roger O’Neill and Chelsea Haskey were named players of the week today by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference following outstanding performances over the weekend that gave both teams their first conference wins.

Senior Roger O’Neill matched a career high by scoring 24 points to lead the Saint Martin’s men to a 71-59 win over Western Oregon on Saturday night. O’Neill scored the Saints first nine points of the game and went 9-of-15 from the field including a pair of three pointers and added seven boards and three assists. The Preseason All-GNAC team selection is now the sixth leading scorer in the conference putting up 15.4 points per game and is closing in on 1,000 points in his Saint Martin’s career.

“I felt good,” said O’Neill in a postgame interview posted on SMUSaints.com, “I try to put myself into positions where I can help my team score points.”

Haskey

Chelsea Haskey boxes out Evergreen’s Danielle Swain

The Saints Martin’s women picked up a 70-66 upset of conference leader Seattle Pacific on Saturday night with junior Chelsea Haskey leading the way with 18 points and 8 rebounds. The Black Hills High School alum also had two steals as the Saints’ defense stepped up to shutdown the Falcons’ top players. Haskey also scored 16 points with four boards on Thursday night in their 67-49 loss to Montana State-Billings.

Haskey now leads the Saints in points (13.1 ppg), field goal percentage (45%), rebounds (6.9 rpg) and blocks (11) and has scored in double digits in 11-of-14 games this season posting a double-double in two of those games.

Both Saint Martin’s teams take to the road this weekend. The men travel to Alaska to take on Fairbanks on Thursday and Anchorage on Saturday. Meanwhile, the women will face Central Washington in Ellensburg on Thursday and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday night.

Tonight (1/7): SPSCC doubleheader; Blazers host Wolves

clipperlogoThe South Puget Sound Community College basketball teams play their first home doubleheader of the season when they host Green River tonight. The women start things off at 6:00 PM and the men will follow at 8:00 PM. The two teams have played just three games total at SPSCC this season and haven’t played in Olympia since a women’s game on December 8th.

The SPSCC women come into the game looking to get things turned around after a 115-18 loss on Wednesday night to Clark. In that game, the Clippers made just five field goals, turned the ball over 35 times and were out rebounded 41-18. But they have a chance to wipe that bad taste out of their mouth right away facing off with the 1-9 Green River Gators, who fell 91-34 to Centralia on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the men come into the game at 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the NWAACC West region and face a Green River squad that is 9-4 overall and 1-1 in region. The Clippers dropped a 73-64 decision to Clark last week. Scott Ewing and Olympia’s Jamey Smith average 17.3 and 17.2 points per game but were held well under their average by the Penguins. Timberline’s Kole Podowicz stepped up and scored 25 points and is averaging 15 points in the four games that he has played this season. Green River is led by Kortney Darby’s 17 points and seven boards per game.

In the lone high school hoops action tonight, the Black Hills girls travel to Lacey to take on Timberline in a non-conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Saints_logoThe Saint Martin’s women’s basketball team looks for their first conference win tonight when they play host to Montana State-Billings at Marcus Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.

The Saints are 7-5 overall this season but 0-2 in GNAC play after struggling on the road against two highly ranked teams in Simon Fraser and Western Washington in December.
