Saturday scoreboard: Saints softball season (probably) ends

Northwest Nazarene 10, Saint Martin’s 2 – More from SMUSaints.com
With their game one win and Montana State Billings’ loss to Simon Fraser, Saint Martin’s got to within one game of earning the GNAC’s automatic NCAA tournament bid, but the Saints’ best season likely came to an end in the first inning of game two when Northwest Nazarene pushed five runs across and cruised to a 10-2 victory.
The Saints finish third in the GNAC at 23-13 and 33-18-1 overall, a 24 win improvement in Rick Noren’s second season at the helm. They still have a very slim chance of being one of five teams to receive an at-large bid into the West Regional.

Friday scoreboard: Slam spoils Reign’s casino opener
International Basketball League
Bellingham Slam 133, Olympia Reign 104
Saint Martin’s alum Blake Poole scored 15 points and brought down 13 rebounds and the Saints’ Jeremy Green added 15 points to help the Bellingham Slam to a 133-104 spoiling of the Olympia Reign’s debut at the Skookum Creek Events Center at the Little Creek Casino. Three former Evergreen Geoducks – Mike Ward, Marcus Wright and Nick Moore – led the way for the Reign scoring 20, 13 and 12 points respectively.
The two teams battled back and forth for the first seven minutes of the game and Ward’s field goal at the 5:06 mark gave the Reign a 15-12 lead. The Slam then went on a 17-2 run to close out the first quarter and never allowed the Reign to get within eight points again.
Up 63-51 at halftime, the Slam reeled off the first seven points of the second half to take a 19 point lead. The Reign had one breath of life left cutting a 22 point lead to just 12 in the third quarter but the Slam outscored the Reign 46-29 over the last 13 minutes of the game to give themselves the easy victory.
Bellingham was led by Ira Graham’s 27 points and six rebounds. Morris Anderson added 26 points and seven boards. Paul Hafford chipped in 18 points and Michael Duty scored another 15.
Ward scored 18 points for the Reign in the first half but was held to just one basket in the final 24 minutes of play. River Ridge’s Giovanne Woods scored 11 points while Chris Weakley and Jacob Manning added ten points each for Olympia. Ex-Timberline Blazer and Geoduck superstar Nate Menefee looked rusty in scoring just six points on 1-for-8 shooting after arriving part way into the first quarter. The NAIA All-American averaged over 26 points for the Reign last season.
The Olympia Reign have over a week to work out the kinks and will travel to the 212 Sports Complex in Clackamas, Oregon on Saturday, April 28th to take on the Portland Chinooks. They return to Little Creek on Tuesday, May 1st when they play host to the Vancouver Volcanoes at 7:00 PM.

Olympia Reign break radio silence

The Olympia Reign, Olympia’s professional basketball team, made a couple of announcements on their Facebook page today…
“The Little Creek Casino, Kamilche Trading Post, The Landing, and Island Enterprises have acquired a brand new basketball floor and equipment so the Olympia Reign can play all their home games at the Skookum Creek Event Center located next to the Little Creek Casino Resort. It is an amazing venue and we would like to thank them for providing such a nice home court to protect!”
I knew that the plan was to play at Little Creek but I was skeptical that it would ever happen so I’m glad to see things progressing. I think it’s a good plan and could be a good place to play. I just hope that the proper marketing is done to get butts in the seats and they put on a good show. I have my doubts.
And the Reign also announced open runs and tryout times…
“Olympia Reign will start open runs on Thursday March 1st from 7 to 9 pm at South Puget Sound CC. They will continue every Tuesday and Thursday at the same time until tryouts. On March 17th and 18th from 9am to 3 pm the Olympia Reign will be hosting tryouts at South Puget Sound CC. The fee for tryouts is $50. Call Coach Smothers at 360-250-9881 or Owner Mark Felton at 360-790-5165 with any questions.”
So if you think you have the goods to play in the IBL, get your butt out to SPSCC.
