Tonight (5/24): Reign host Chinooks

The Olympia Reign and Portland Chinooks meet for the fourth and final time this season at the Skookum Creek Events Center at Little Creek Casino. Portland leads the series 2-1 beating the Reign 123-113 on May 3rd and 126-118 last Friday. The Reign picked up a 138-127 on April 28th.

The Chinooks feature Oregon State’s David Lucas and Cleveland State’s Jared Cunningham who each average 20 points per game. Kevin Ford leads the league with 13.3 rebounds per game for Portland.

Former Evergreen guard Mike Ward is sixth in scoring in the International Basketball League at 21 points per game and fourth in assists dishing out 5.5 per game. River Ridge alum Giovanne Woods is second in the league with 6.1 assists per game.

Tip-off at Little Creek is 7:00 PM. Tickets are just $7 for adults, $5 for players club members and kids 12 and under get in free.

Rough day for Olympia area softball teams. In the 4A district tournament, Olympia lost two games to end their season. The Bears finish at 13-11 overall.

Capital got beaten soundly by Bonney Lake but still gets to play another day. They play a loser-out game tomorrow at 10:00 AM.

And W.F. West finally beat Tumwater this season after coming close two other times. The loss was only the T-Birds second this season and they will move on to the state tournament next week.

Bellingham Slam 130, Olympia Reign 101

After playing just three minutes last night, former Saint Martin’s forward Jeremy Green scored 28 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Bellingham Slam to a 130-101 trouncing of the Olympia Reign. Nicholas Moore led the Reign with 17 points and 11 boards and Giovanne Woods added 16 points and four assists.

Bellingham was in control nearly the entire game for the second time this season. Ike Ohanson’s field goal with 5:59 remaining in the first quarter gave the Reign the lead at 14-13. Paul Hafford answered back thirty second later to make it 15-14 and the Slam never trailed again. A Marcus Whitaker three pointer with 3:32 left in the first half cut the Slam lead to six but an 11-4 run to close the half gave the Slam a 58-45 lead.

The Reign cut into the lead to start the second half knocking it down to five at 58-53 at the 9:43 mark of the third quarter, but the Slam then went on a 44-19 run to finish the quarter up by 30 at 102-72 and never looked back.

Six Reign players scored in double digits – Woods, Moore, Mike Ward, Nate Menafee, Whitaker and Ohanson – but nobody scored more than 16. Meanwhile, Bellingham had five double digit scorers including Green, Hafford’s 25 and 19 each from Zach Henifin and Morris Anderson.

Former Saint Martin’s star Blake Poole scored just two points for the Slam and played less than two minutes in the second half.

Boys soccer

Capital 1, Kennedy 0

Bryce Joling scored in the 56th minute to lead Capital to a 1-0 win over Kennedy in the 3A bi-districtplayoffs. The win sends the Cougars to state with a playoff game likely at Tumwater Stadium on Wednesday.

Centralia 13, Tumwater 0

Timberline’s 8-1 morning victory over Columbia River put the Blazers in the district title game against Kelso. But the Hilanders scored seven runs in the first three innings and held on to knock off the Blazers 7-4. The Blazers still qualified for state despite the loss. Tumwater was not so lucky. Their season ended with a 13-0 loss to Centralia.

Today (5/12): Reign and racing

20120512-111452.jpgThe Olympia Reign continue their weekend home series tonight when Saint Martin’s Blake Poole and Jeremy Green and the Bellingham Slam come to town. The Slam are 5-1 on the season and knocked off the Reign in the season opener, 133-104.

Game time at the Skookum Creek Events Center at Little Creek Casino is at 7:00 PM. Tickets are just $7 for adults.

Racing continues at South Sound Speedway with Super Late Model 100s, Mini Stocks, Bumblebees and FSCRA. Qualifying starts at 5:00 PM and racing starts at 6:30. Tickets are $16 for adults.

Tyler Ridgeway threw the game-tying run out at the plate to seal North Thurston’s first district title since 2002 with a 5-4 win over EvCo regular season champ W.F. West. Riley Stordahl pitched a complete game for the Rams and Spencer Dorsey went 3-for-3 with two triples and two RBI. The Rams move on to the state regionals as a #1 seed. They play at 10:00 AM back at Bearcats Stadium in Chehalis.

Today (5/3): Reign, rain, rain


The Olympia Reign hope to get back on track when they host the Portland Chinooks tonight at the Skookum Creek Events Center.

On Saturday night, the Reign picked up their first win of the season with a 138-127 win over the Chinooks in Portland but stumbled Tuesday against the Vancouver Volcanoes losing 114-99. In Saturday’s win, Nicholas Moore and Marcus Whitaker both scored over 30 points and Giovanne Woods added 27. The Chinooks’ Jared Cunningham – from Cleveland State, not the NBA bound, early entry from Oregon State – scored 32 points and brought down 14 boards.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM

In boys soccer action, Timberline travels to Ingersoll Stadium to take on 3A Narrows League leader Capital at 7:00 PM. Capital is 6-0-2 on the season and Timberline is 3-3-2, good enough for third in league. The two teams played to a 1:1 tie on April 11th.

Weather has already cancelled the 3A Narrows League title game today between Timberline and Yelm. They will go to Districts as the #1 and #2 seeds respectively.

Weather has also moved the Tumwater/North Thurston baseball game to the RAC at 6:00 PM, if it gets played at all. River Ridge is also scheduled to play Centralia today, but it is highly doubtful they will get that game in.

UPDATE: River Ridge and Centralia have been moved to the RAC with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 PM.

River Ridge led by two goals with 24 minutes left to play, a playoff bid on the line, but North Thurston came back to tie it and take it to a shootout where the Rams won, 5-4. River Ridge is out while North Thurston moves on to play Hockinson on Saturday at 6:00 PM at Battle Ground Stadium in the 2A District IV playoffs.

Kevin Weyand and Connor Sigmon scored two goals apiece and secured an undefeated regular season for Tumwater with a 6-1 win over Black Hills.

Bruce Joling also scored two goals for Capital in their 4-0 blanking of Yelm.

Vancouver Volcanoes 114, Olympia Reign 99

The Olympia Reign returned home to the Little Creek casino but shot just 38% from the field in a 114-99 loss to the defending IBL champion Vancouver Volcanoes. Former Evergreen Geoducks Mike Ward and Nicholas Moore led the Reign with 20 points apiece and Marcus Wright was the only other Reign to crack double digits with 12 points.

The Olympia Reign return to the Skookum Creek Events Center at Little Creek tonight when they play host to the Vancouver Volcanoes.

The Reign are 1-1 on the season after a 138-127 victory over the Portland Chinooks Saturday night. The Volcanoes are 1-0 after their 113-112 Saturday night victory over the Salem Soldiers.

Game time is 7:00 PM and tickets are $7 for adults or $5 with a Little Creek Players Club card.
